get some tein HA's, not too soft not too hard or if you dont want coilovers get the tein basic spring set, lowers the car with some stiff springs,

OR

if you want the best of both worls get some damper adjustable coilovers and you can have comfortable for the street and stiff for the track!

the isc ones look the biz, ive dealt with the bloke before and hes a nice guy,

height adjustable and 32 step damper you cant really go wrong for the price brand new AND they come with warranty

another good aussie set are these:

seriously, search, there are a lot of threads around with REAL information, ud be stupid if u went purely off this thread.

and it depends what u consider a good brand, u arent going to get a good quality item with height and damper adjustment for 1-1.5k new, simple.

u wanna spend f**k all, ur gonna get f**k all, just because the metal is all anodized and pretty doesnt make them good quality suspension.

also you do not need damper adjustability, and u will not get damper adjustability worth using for ur price range.

my experience is that u wont listen to a word i say, because it doesnt fit with what u ideally want in ur head, and ull go and buy some cheap suspension, it will be hard, it will go low, and ull think its the bee's knees, reccomend it to everyone u know, the vicious cycle of cheapy suspension will keep on turning, and you'll never be wise to the fact of how bad ur suspension really was because u never had something decent to compare it to, and we just pray u sell ur car soon enough that u dont have to deal with the inevitable failing/breaking of the suspension.

:P

Spot on! If you haven't got $3k to budget on something like a DMS or Bilstein Coilover kit... Forget getting coilovers!!!

Save a grand, get yourself a decent springs (Kings, Eibach or Tein) and shock (Bilstein, Koni, or heaven forbid, even KYB) combo, and you'll be FAR better off than spending $1.5k on fancy anodised crap.

As I recently said on the opelaus forum:

Coil overs are no different to normal struts. In fact last time I checked both the Astra and the Vectra come with 'coilovers' in the front as standard.

The only reason that you hear about chinese coilovers leaking is that people fail to realise that a front coilover that you buy on ebay for $300 each probably has a $20 damper insert, and the rest of the money is spent on springs, fancy colored anodised parts and adjustable platform seats...

And then they start crying that their full sik $20 damper starts leaking...

Wow... should've read the rest of your post before I replied. ^ That's gospel... you should put that shit in the bible. I have never in my entire life seen a paragraph that speaks the truth more than that! I have a new God! :(

nisskid is spot on! Most cheap coilovers will have high spring weights, a most times will not have choice of a lower rate. As for replacement parts - forget it where maintanance is concerned.

To put it into figures for you, I paid $1500 for my JIC FLT-FAS just before the dollar dropped. Now these are nothing special in the coil over world, but fit with what i needed of height adjustment and dampner adjustment with an 8kg frt and 6kg rr spring rate.

Most cheap coilovers will have high spring weights

The reason being is that their $20 damper inserts have such piss poor high speed bump properties, that they need to specify a stupidly high spring rate to stop the shock continuously bottoming out and flogging out the ball top [quicker than it will standard]...

On the other hand a shock that can competently separate it's high and low speed bump will barely touch it's bump stops, whilst also providing a smoother ride...

not a truer word spoken, ever

i have trust type s coilovers and man do they shit on any ISC or HSD or whatever the f**k those other shitty chinese copies call themselves. the difference all comes down to the valving inside the shock, which is far superior in good japanese brands. i don't think you need a $3k budget to get good coilovers as old made said, but $1k sure as f**k isn't going to get you anything good brand new.

$2k+ minimum

the JIC ones are pretty basic, and entry level teins are twin tube and pretty rubbish too. the top level teins are miles better (mono-tube, alloy body, better valving etc) but cost more than you can spend.

but look, honestly if you don't have the money and want to buy something then just go ahead and buy some of the 1500 dorrar ones that everyone buys. G4/D2/HSD/ISC/tein/JIC. basically all the coil-over kits at that price point will be twin tube (or cheap monotube) all will have simple adjustment and will all be pretty average in the valving department. most of those places make one shock and just add different attachments to suit different car mountings. they don't actually valve them differently for different models, they just try and cover it up buy going heavy spring rate on heavy cars and lighter rates on lighter cars.

at least the crappo gear you get will be new, and it may come with some kind of warranty which is good. and if your factory gear is stuffed (quite possible after 15 years of going up and down) then it may even be an improvement. and for drifting at least the high spring rates will reduce roll which will make the car easier to break into a slide. so it's not all bad.

but really the good stuff starts with top level teins (RA, RE, RS, N1), the top shelf Greddy gear with remote canisters is quite good too but $4K+, ohlins gear of course is very good. there is good bilstein gear too, and the DMS are a good option too and have some budget-ish choices that seem to be good value. then you can go up to pro-flex, penske, sachs, top ohliins etc and spend $20,000 and more for a set of 4. so considering the best gear costs over $20K, now think about what goes into the $1500 stuff...

oh, and for the record in my street/drift/fun silvia I have HSD HRs and I wouldn't buy them (they came in the car). they are ok on the track but about equal with their $1500 price tag. in the circuit GTR I have top shelf Ohlins remote canister 4 way adjustables and they are miles ahead both on the track and on the street even with higher spring rates. and they handle the bumps very nicely.

I have a set of these in my 32. Their awesome on the track! The elevel of adjustment is also REALLY good! Price isnt too bad either. All in all I personally found them a pretty good buy!

Not so much on the road. They can get a bit heavy. But Im in NSW.

Good to see you have done your homework mate! ISC are definetly not made in China, they are made in Taiwan and also Australia (they even use Japanese bearings). And as for being copies...I think not, ISC are made by ISC and they are definetly not re badged junk. I do no where your coming from as there is alot of shit out there at the moment but please get your facts right before you make comments on a public foum...

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
