Hey Peeps,

A while a go I had a surge tank fitted in the boot - but I got them to take it out cause I constantly could smell petrol and it really made me feel sick.

They told me that fuel can sometime seep through the rubber pipes used in the installation - not leak, but just fumes seepage or something like this.

Is this smell of petrol common with in-boot surge tank installtions ?

Is there any wat to completely eliminiate the fuel smell ?

Would braided lines help ? (I have heard no)

Cause I am thinking of doing another surge tank with in-line fuel pump this time but don't want any fuel stink.

Cheers,

Braided lines wouldn't help, because it's just metal meshed together and is not liquid proof at all. Braiding is just used for adding strength to the hoses so they don't expand as much under pressure, which isn't really your problem.

I would try finding the source of the leak. It probably is around any rubber bits you can find, although there may also be a pinhole or 2 in the tank welds. It could just be that you need better quality fuel hose to stop the smell coming through.

Out of interest, what pump did you have on the surge tank? Was it noisy?

Jim, it was a Bosche 044 - I beleive (in tank).

Paul, I had the tank in for 8 weeks + and the smell stayed - which is why I got it ripped out.

Maybe I get those fandangled fancy non-fumage hose specially for fuel and a different surgey.......

I'll gave a chat to the boys.

Use small diam stainless steel tube with Swagelok/Tubelok fittings to pipe the pump from the tank->surge tank->existing lines.

You will need a tube bender, but your best bet is to just measure up the lengths and turns you need, make a simple sketch...and take it to a tubing company can have it made for you in 15minutes.

No smell, no leak points! And looks great/neat with polished stainless stell tube and fittings.

You are a clever bastard Roy !!!

Of course - that makes sense ! - I was thinking all the time that I needed to use rubber - It never even ocurred to me to use SS -

Although now I think about it - they make fuel lines/rails out of high nickel content steel don't they ? Or Aluminum ??

I'm sure SS will work too but !

Cheers for that !

I wouldn't worry about the petrol smell all that much.. I actually like it

I did have a surge tank fitted in my rx3 coupe and had the same problem. I actually had two pumps in the boot and a surge tank... there were also two holes in the parcel tray where speakers used to be, so the smell would come straight through into the cabin... not too good if you wanna go places without smelling like your local servo.

I would - petrol is carcinogenic, especially premium unleaded. I would never tell anyone to not worry about petrol smell coming into the cabin. If you can smell any while you are driving along it is bad news!

Roy, Mine was only $40 from a car store, and I've Tec-screwed it on the passenger side on the gearbox tunnel. I'm planning on setting it up so that it has a hose connected to it , and that it will spray the underbonnet directly from the cabin:D

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
