Before anyone says anything, i spend 3hrs searching today :) (might me a good a idea to get a graph going for the stick lol would save so much time)

I got a skyline (33) with around 160km on it and i wanna do an oil change using synthic oil, current using turbo light (motul 10w-40) i want to use a better oil as turbo light is pretty average.

Any suggestions on wat to use?

i thinking either valvoline (10w-50) or castrol edge (10w-60) both 100% snthic. Not really keen on using 300V cause its a race oil and i believe that it has to be changed ever 3-5k.

I don't drive my car too hard to occationally give it a bit, currently changing ever 5k

hey mate,

im using motul turbolight 4100 what makes you say its average?? has it decreased the performance in your car? has it created excess wear on your motor? or are you just saying its average due to all the posts you have read claiming only 300v is suitable and that turbolight is shit.

Personally for myself, and possibly yourself, i do not race my car, do not thrash it very often, it is just a daily driver that sometimes is driven hard which i like to keep in the best possible condition.

I think alot of people place too much emphasis on there oil types for street cars that are not pure performance cars.

Just think if you took your car to the local mechanic down the road what would they put in?? my regular mechanic when i asked him what he would put in my car, he showed me some 20buk cheapo shell oil that he puts in all the cars with no complaints!

For me the key is regular oil changes every 5k and i also think if it aint broke why fix it??

personally i would stick with the motul turbolight relativley cheap and does the job!

although if you are still keen on the royal purple oils, i found some at autobarn in moorabin 99bux for 5 liters

good luck either way mate!

It has been argued with the 300V you can put oil changes off till 10k, though I'm not suggesting it, just mentioning it. If you want full synthetic while staying with motul try the 8100 series (like the x-cess 5w-40), cheaper than 300V. 10w-60 hot rating is just too thick for a skyline, even 10w-50 hot rating is too thick imo (although since the engine has done 160k I still wouldn't use a 50 unless it was leaking oil). As for turbolight 4100, it's an ok semi-synth, about 75% synthetic I've read.

You should change your Oil and Oil Filter every 5000kms no matter if the car is driven more or less.

If the oil you used before (Motul?) has no problems then stick to it.

If you want to change it up, go Mobil Full Synthetic, but like Moodles2 has said, you have done 160K, so you engine is older then the newer Skylines, keep an eye on your oil when using a full synthetic.

alright guys went down to autobarhn this afternoon and the guy that actually worked there was pretty "in the loop" with engine oil. He explained that rating of oil is aus is different to europe, here 100% snythetic really mean that its a min 78%. Motul been from france(?) mean they can't put 100% on there(4100), but by looking at the gradings it shows that its better than most the oils out there. For aus standard turbo light is 100% synthetic.

What was really amazing that some brands publish 100% synthetic and based on the gradings it is only as good as some semi-snthtetics (and worse that the turbolight 4100).

Anyways it was better than the valvoline and the edge was way too thick to use.

I picked up another bottle of motul turbo light 4100 and gonna change it soon. But like previously mentioned it is more important how often u change the oil rather than gettting the best oil and doing 10k on it.

From my point of view thread closed and thanks for everones input, hopefully future searches find this tread informative. BTW might be a good a idea to add this info to the oil sticky? i mean everyone is stating their opinion but no one has the facts/evidence to support them or just bs 300V and 300V (or the thread is just too long and people are cbf reading it lol

  • 4 weeks later...

my cars done done 150,000kms and does not use a drop of oil between servies (every 5000kms)

i used to run turbolight but for the last 2 oil changes i used castrol edge sport 5w-30...maintains perfect oil pressure and never ever comes close to the "2" on the oil pressure gauge wen idling in traffic on a summer day

im due for a service now so i might change again and go motul 8100 5w-40, herd its a realy good oil and it costs $75 or so

I use 300v... but if price is an issue, I would recommend Nulon 10w40. ~$50 for 5L. Full Synthetic.

The improvement in my wife's Magna is beyond words. I used their engine clean, then poured in the oil followed by their Lifter Free and Tune-up.

No more tapping. Car is more responsive and much, much quieter. Almost a pleasure to drive... almost (still a FWD Magna).

Funny how everyone seems to insist that oil changes must be done at a maximum of 5000km or else your engine will surely explode....(slight sarcasm there)

I too change my oil every 5000km as I am fairly pedantic (always have been with my cars), but I'm not convinced that leaving it till 10000km is going to be all doom and gloom for your engine. I know that the newer Porsche's have a service interval of 30,000km or 2 years. Farkin ridiculous if you ask me, but that's the interval.

For mine if you change your oil regularly, then the turbolight will be fine. I use it anyway... :/

    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around.
