R35 Gt-r Too Noisy? Too Much Nvh? Fix It!

I've decided to re-trim the rear child seats in good quality leather to replace the horrid vinyl / pleather, which detracts from the rest of the interior.

Just another cost cutting measure by Nissan not meant to be noticed by us, the crazy "speed freaks" who never look over their shoulder.

( Yes, I really do love my car so don't all jump in telling me the usual things, how fast and "affordable" it is etc)

When I removed the rear seats it became painfully apparent to me how much mechanical noise comes from the transaxle, suspension and rear tyres road noise.

Most of it is remarkably well muffled by those flimsy rear seats, but not all.

Also, the heat which the transmission generates goes straight to the console and the rear seats- just touch them when the transmission oil reaches 90deg!

You can boil a soft drink in the rear cup holder after one hour in the car.

Solution: line the rear seat compartment with heat shield fabric and 3 layers of recycled cotton Removalist Blanket sandwitched and stuck with double sided tape from Bunnings. Total cost $50 + 4 hours.

The job takes a bit of effort, but it's worth it. My car has been transformed to a much higher level of interior ambience, which added just 2kg to it's weight and $100K to the way it

sounds and "feels" inside.

If the clunking noises of the gear box, the thumping of the rear suspension over the pot holes and the roar of the rear tyres add to your overall enjoyment of the GT-R, this mod is not for you,

because they are all gone now and I can enjoy the sound of the engine and the BOSE sound system uninterrupted. I love it!

Excellent modification GT-Ricer, Im really impressed with that and from what you say makes a big difference. Did you install any of the sound deadener yourself? or was it done by the motor trimmer who did the leather seats?

Also correct me if I'm wrong, but you have an E55 AMG? If so, how does this compare to the GT-R when you stick the boot into it??

Thank you. I did all the sound and heat proofing myself. There is nothing to it, just patience.

My rear seats look even better now than these photos. The trimmer has now heat shrunk the leather so there is no more sagging and it looks totaly original.

As to my other car, the E55, it is very fast for a 4-door sedan but not as fast as the GT-R. To start with, it is pretty hard to get traction with RWD and 700Nm so the ESP robs you of all this torque on launch. 5 gears are much taller, especially the first two. My best 400m was 12.35 sec in the E55 and best 0-100 4.5 sec but generally I would do 12.6 and 4.7sec. The GTR alraedy did 3.9 and as it loosens up, it will hopefully do 0-100 in 3.6-3.7 sec and 400m in 11.8. Around EC the E55 will do 1.53, Wakefield 1.09. I hope to do considerably better in the GT-R. In all gears the GT-R just feels ballistic and is never overwhelmed by the engine. The E55 is a great sedan, but if you mash the accelerator and try to use all its power and torque at once, it just disappears in a cloud of smoke.

mind you, if you know how to use it, it still totally destroys all FPV's and HSV's around OP , Wakefield and EC as well as a few Porsches, M3's and Audis RS4's, but it would never match the GT-R on the streets or the track. The GT-R will never match the E55's refinement and quality though.

Different cars entirely.

Thanks for your feedback GT-Ricer. The GT-R and E55 AMG are definately my two favorite cars, if I recall you had the CL 65 AMG rims too- magnificent! I guess they don't come cheaply?

Anyhoo, I was most interested in the seat of the pants feel of both vehicles, the more I read owners views about the GT-R the more I believe it is the world's best sports car. The E55 sounds like the best of its breed too. I was abit disappointed when Merc went to the n/a 6.3. It's great but the 720Nm/1800 rpm, plus the 5.5 S/C noise is too good.

      This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.

      Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.       My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.

      Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno

      Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
