i have 1 and im on my p's

but dont think they are quite legal though they supposedly have 206kw where the limit is 200

but thats measured from the crank and im not sure whether the 200kw restriction is at the crank or at the wheels

They're illegal.

Don't think you'll be fine because cops won't pick them as a "hoon" car. Your insurance company certainly will notice the difference.

why is it illegal?...if it was, don't you think the RTA would do something about it when the info of driver and car are entered into their system?...and its not like they are turbo or have a 'too high' power to weight ratio like the later M3s.....btw ive been pulled over for speeding on my greens and he even pointed that out...lol but i talked my way out of a fine  .

Im on my green Ps!!...wohoo off them end of year!

What cars are not P plate legal?

All the performance V8s and all turbo cars...also some NA car with high power to weight ratios...not sure what the ratio is thou.

Some states have different rules. Where are you located?

In victoria, they are illegal if you got your licence before the rules changed. They make more than 125kw per tonne.

The new rules bans all turbocharged, 8cyl and "high performance 6 cylinder" cars. The 350 and M3 are some of those listed, however, the V35 does not appear.

ill go contact RTA tomorrow to get a 100% answer, there's mixed answers everywhere and i don't know how the RTA works. its bs though all these turbo laws and v8's etc... they go to fast? so a hatchback sp23 mazda 3 or any other car you pick out cant reach 100 in a 50 zone? ridiculous, instead of people on p's speeding in turbos they speed in little shit small cars.

u forgot to add dangerous cars aswell my friend had a vitara with no rubber on the tyres nor good brakes now that no1 can get the turbo or v8 car they wanted they buy shit boxes and tend to not care to repair things on them so they save money

I don't think they're illegal if you're in NSW. The restricted cars list on the RTA site doesn't have it listed and i couldn't find any other limitations for p-platers.

I got pulled over a while ago at a RBT stop, and the cops checked my licence and made sure i had both my p-plates on display.

i called up just now and the lady on the rta side said it is legal to drive on P plates, (I'm calling from NSW - so other states might wanna call and check because i think the laws vary from state to state). there is a list she told me to check up for prohibited vehicles and its not on there aswel (LINK http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/downlo...icles_list.pdf)

now just need to buy the car :) cheers. no1 wants to sell one for 23k? ;)

They're defiantly illegal In vic. They're way over the power to weight ratio of 125kwt/tonne (which has been in force since about 1994 so no excuse for not knowing). And yes the power stated is CRANK power as stipulated by the manufacture. The only saving grace is that the weight of the car is EITHER the manufacturers or an alternative weight supplied. However, this wont save a car once it's on the banned list. You'd also need to get the V35 to weigh in at 1640kgs. Thats a lot of bricks. Finally this option is only available if Vic Roads dont have a database weight for the car and they PREFER you to get a manufactures weight printed on their letterhead. Its a long process but totally worth it considering the penalties. Remembering that the penalties of the fine are nasty (something in the order of $200-300 and 3 points) but you're not covered by insurance. To be honest ANY P platers reading this who know their car is illegal, dont waste your money on insurance, you're not covered. If you're in an accident you will cop it BAD even if you're in the right. You can ask the question "what are the chances" but it's an insurance company, they will do anything to get out of paying.

Back in the day when mods were ok you could technically be driving an R32 GTST with GTR running gear so long as it was engineered and thats fine. So many P platers had 400-600hp VL-T's and were "untouchable" in the end the thing that screwed them over was the larger speakers in the parcel shelf (illegal to cut the parcel shelf as its a "structural" part of the car). Similar issue to cutting the battery support for a front mount in S14's.

All of this info is available on the traffic authority websites. My advice would be to call the RTA office and try to speak directly to an onsite engineer or call 3-4 times and take the average answer because it will be different every time you call. Also ask for a reference to the answer given. I'd do the same research for any mods you plan on doing to the car. Download a copy of the ADR's and stay within the limitations. You can do nearly anything so long as you conform to that. If you cant conform just get an engineering cert. Also remember with mods that EPA laws are not covered under the ADR's and are a completely seperate regulation so you will need to call them directly.

I'd also like to add that there are plenty of good cars which are fun and safe that you can drive on your P's. I'm sure a lot of the older guys will agree that we've all been there and gone through it, so suck it up. I'm sure they'll also agree that if they had powerful cars on their P's they wouldn't be here today.

I think they got rid of this law for anybody who got their licence after 2007. Its now based on turbocharged/v8 or "high performance 6cyl" other than power to weight....

ive had no trouble from cops bout mine on my green p's in qld

there should really be some kind of test cause not every young person is a sh*t driver yeh there is alot of shit drivers yound and old, ost of the time age and experience makes no difference half the cars i see getting around with dints and scratches are middle aged ppl

ive only had my license 2yrs but i havnt hit anything or scraped on anything or even bin close to crashing

not many young ppl are out to drive like a f*cking idiot its just a minority that are and then everybody else automaticly assumes p plates there a shit driver, and ppl that think like this need to pull their finger out of their ass and wake up to themselves

i didnt go spend 35k on a car to thrash it

and no my mum didnt buy it for me and neither did the bank i worked f**king hard to buy it and i hate d**kheads thinking im a sh*t driver cause i have to where p plates

sorry bout the rank but i was bored

Technically in NSW, the answer is "it depends on who you ask".

On the RTA's web site on P1/P2 driving restrictions you have the following paragraphs:

An additional list, Guide to prohibited eight cylinder, turbo and supercharged high performance vehicles, may also be viewed and downloaded. This additional list is a guide only and subject to change at any time without notice. If your vehicle is not on the list but would otherwise be considered to be a 'prohibited vehicle', you must not drive it, unless exempt.

(Emphasis added)

Since the V35 has the same underpinnings as the Z33, which is on the prohibited list, an interpretation of the above sentence would mean that its illegal. It's the same car with a different body, so it has practically the same performance.

However, the fact that the V35 isn't explicitly on any prohibited list right now means you could argue that you didn't consider it prohibited. The RTA doesn't say by whose "consideration" the car should be banned or not. It's a very grey area, that lawyers would love to profit from.

If the authority that is determining whether your car is P plate legal or not (the cops, RTA, or insurer) isn't aware of the shared platform with a banned car, then they also might not "consider it 'prohibited' " either.

The fact that the V35 carries more weight, and is therefore a touch slower, than a Z33 might also be a factor in arguing that the car shouldn't be prohibited either as its not as fast as the banned vehicle.

+1

And there are lots of cars with same engines in them with different bodies and weights. They all can't be banned.

It's not just the engine though. The V35 and Z33 both share the same "FM" platform. Given that there's almost nothing between them in terms of real world performance a 350GT might be "considered" to be as fast as a 350Z.

But it's not. only goes to 180kmh :)

    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
