Cassbo
Today I planed to cut wire 53 to my ECU to get rid of that pesky 180km/h speed limiter (how often do I get up to those kind of speeds? Once a lap at Eastern Creek ). When I discovered I had left my electrical tape at work I decided to leave my wires alone and just have a little look around to see where the wires go. I remove some plastic wrapping and I discover... this! Correct me if I'm wrong but this does not look like work Nissan has done... so I'm trying to figure out what it's for... Car is 1996 R33 GTS-t Dyno results are to be expected of the car (145-157rwkW with standard everything) Only mod it had when I bought it was a Blitz Full Auto Turbo Timer (later scraped for a timer built into immobiliser) Car still has HICAS Speed limiter definitely works If anyone has any remote idea what it could be please let me know as I am at a complete loss lol Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/ Share on other sites
Duncan
had to beleive, but nissan put that monstrosity there....they are the same in the 32 gtr loom too. apparently it's a common earth point for all those wires. Well... I guess I can take some comfort in knowing that my standards in wiring are exactly the same as Nissan's ie, looks dodgy but is electrically (somewhat) safe Thanks Duncan Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-4782503 Share on other sites
Moodles2
I thought cutting that wire has sideeffects, like HICAS thinking the car is going 0km/h... or am I confused with ATTESSA in gtrs being confused Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-4782750 Share on other sites
Cassbo
I have looked at a few wiring diagrams and wire 53 does say HICAS Diagnostic/Speed Limiter on most of them, as well as a couple of guides saying that you can get "hesitation" at around 140km/h. I figure if I cut it and I don't like what it has done I can always wire it back up Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-4782776 Share on other sites
PM-R33
Cut it, it will be fine. One of the first mods i did to mine back in the day. Flux_nz
just put a switch on it And while you are at it, put a switch on the fuel pump relay too. Cjmartz2k
x2 on the switch on #53. And a turbo timer is not a "mod" Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-4783194 Share on other sites
The Mafia
I've pulled out many RB20 and RRB25 ECU's and that does not look standard. And nissan certainly does not wrap wires with "blue electrical tape" Are you talking about the brown electrical plug? Looks like its had some sort of interceptor ECU on there before. Maybe a harness for a SAFC of EManage, unichip, etc? Cassbo
I was actually thinking of putting a normally closed relay in so when the car reaches around 160km/h it would open circuit wire 53, bypassing the hesitation point automatically. I just can't figure out how I'm going to energise the coil at that point lol And while you are at it, put a switch on the fuel pump relay too. Then hide it somewhere I already have, though one would call it an immobiliser x2 on the switch on #53.And a turbo timer is not a "mod" I will agree, a turbo timer has no performance enhancing ability, it is a electronic relay which bypasses the ignition on a timer. Seeing as most vehicles do not have such facilities as standard, the wiring of the car has needed to be modified for this device to be installed. Therefore, I say it is a mod. My insurance company also agrees with me on this I've pulled out many RB20 and RRB25 ECU's and that does not look standard. And nissan certainly does not wrap wires with "blue electrical tape"Are you talking about the brown electrical plug? Looks like its had some sort of interceptor ECU on there before. Maybe a harness for a SAFC of EManage, unichip, etc? I'm talking about both the blue tape and the brown... thing... Weird thing is, the brown thing isn't a plug, it hasn't got any capacity for any more conductors except for where the cables go in. Without pulling it apart it looks like what Duncan described it as, a common point for all those cables. Duncan
like I said they are not a plug, and they are common in nissan looms. here is one in an r32 gtr loom here are 2 more from a gtr, these ones are under the dash. all are common earths - if you have a multimeter check with continuity mode - all the wires are joined to each other. if you reckon these look dodgy...trace through a factory loom and look for their joined wires. simple brass crimps with a bit of tape around them. looks terrible but works ok for 20+ years apparently Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-4783912 Share on other sites

I just can't figure out how I'm going to energise the coil at that point lol Probably not a good idea to have speed signal wires being connected and disconected whilst the engine is on otherwise you will throw up errors, will probably throw your speed sensitive steering out. I'd just put it on a toggle switch or just cut and put some spade terminals on it so you can easily plug them back together. There is a few ECU wires that go to a brown block thing and its giving me all sorts of headaces. It is a buss connector for all your shield grounds. Basically any of the shielded signal wires that go to the ECU, so CAS, MAF, knock, etc, all have their shield earthed through that connector. If you look at the OEM circuit diagram, you will see a dotted line around some of the lines (pin 55, 54, 44, 45, 46, etc) - this dotted line indicates that shield ground. 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/284542-what-is-this-thing-near-my-ecu/#findComment-7937656 Share on other sites
