Anyone interested might like to pick up a copy. Entertaining reading. Apparently all cars have been modded, some seriously (however the GTR ran basically stock times at the 1/4 mile, despite being tuned...). They ran some laps of Oran Park too... The GTR was beaten by the GT2 and Porsche by 0.5s and 0.2s respectively. The thing is, the GT2 was running hoosier r6's (basically slicks) and the Turbo was runninng Formula R Toyos. The GTR was running the OEM Bridgestones.... Why you would install $50k in mods and then run standard bridgestones isnt quite reality (if you're seriously interested in lap times that is). i know for a fact that the bridgestones are 2 seconds slower than r-specs on the GP circuit, which would easily translate into 1 second on south. Anyway, interesting reading nonetheless, but i reckon the GTR would have easily beaten the South times with equivilent tyres. In fact, i reckon even a standard GTR would have kicked the modded GT2 and Turbo's arses collectively, given the same tyres. Amazing really, given the price!

I had just a quick flick through at the shop and noticed the power output listed of the "modified" GT-R... 258awkW estimated.

Don't they come with near 300awkW as standard? What are they doing?? :)

That car would've had somewhere approaching 345 at the wheels. They must have had Dyno dramas with it and stuffed up the estimate. I was surprised how slow it was given these mods. White 35 has 345 at the wheels and is pulling 3.3 0 - 100. Duncan did a 11.1 quarter mile in his with similar mods. My Mods were also a lot cheaper, and produced much better results also.

Maybe they babied the car, or it was hot, or boost was turned low...or something.

It says somewhere in the article they had dramas removing the carbon undertray which meant they couldnt dyno the car, probably due to clearance issues (or maybe they didnt want to get it dirty, lol). Maybe it has an aftermarket undertray? anyway i removed my complete undertray in my garage with $2 tools, so dunno what's up with that. And yeah it should have about 340awkw. Their estimates are a bit rubbery. Interesting article though.

Yeah, that guy's letter in the August issue (Porshe choice) got me fired up & thought

I would say something! They always cut down the text though & made it read a bit nicer

than what I put down - haha. I suppose the response was that they printed it (my 2nd time)

Its a shame Willall couldnt get the Silver R35 with the Turbo upgrade in that shootout -

that would have been quite interesting. Nice body parts & all the internal goodies as well.

Yes it was a good article. Motor have been doing lots of "tuner" articles over the last few

years & it is the only magazine I buy regularly.

I agree about the launch - whats the point in putting it in but saying dont go for it?

Surely one or two full launches wont hurt it ( ah hem.. I have done a few with my full

JDM launch control with no problems)

Overly careful owners like that does not help the erroneous belief being passed around by GTR 'haters' that the GTR's transmission is 'fragile'

Surely one LC will not hurt the transmission - especially when it's the revised LC where warranty is not void so long as VDC is not turned off. :ninja:

From my memory of that article their estimates were based on a 30% drivetrain loss.....which sounds unusually high...obviously resulting in the lower rwks.

Willall just dynoed my R35 JDM on their 4 wheel dyno & it made 278 awkw standard.

Now waiting for results from new custom COBB tune with boost control. It is not unusual

for cars to vary on power level depending on kays & type of dyno used.

Some of you may remember this shootout. An R35, with apparently $50k in mods, ran a 46.7 around Oran Park South. It was running the stocker bridgestone tyres. I think it was John Bowe driving. Compared to a 911T running 888's (46.5) and a GT2 running Hoosier A6's - which are essentially slicks, running the best time of 46.2.... ALL cars had various mods. The tyre thing gave me the shits though (i mean really, a GT2 on slicks vs an R35 on stocker bridgestones).

Anyway, i had a chance to run Oran Park South in my R35 with slicks recently....

Result=46.3

Now, i dont have $50k in mods, and i am not John Bowe. I have less than $10k in mods (Willall midpipe, tune, 18" wheels and tyres). In fact, it's about $5k really, as i was using cheapie 2nd hand slicks on the day. Michelin p-cup 270/68/18's.

What does this tell us?

a) The GTR is one awesome machine, proven capable and comparable to the 911T and GT2 at a fraction of the cost.

b) You dont need to spend $50k on mods, in fact you'll probably make it go slower (if done merely for bling factor)

c) For track excursions, the No.1 most important mod is... TYRES.

Agreed, in fact I have 19 inch Volks on the way wrapped in Hoosiers - look out Bathurst a two twenty something is in my sights...

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
