UPDATE

As of today i have a failed application for a personal import.

vehicle purchase in 2009 by myself

last personal import i had done june/2010

rules changed Nov/2010 = 1 in 5 year rule ETC

new application made FEB/2012 for vehicle bought in 2009.

Today i receive the reply for the application to do a personal import due to 5yr rule my application has failed even tho my vehicle was purchased prior to Nov/2010 and may last personal import was done prior to the rule change.

Assessment of your Application

I have assessed your application to import 2004 XYZ%$@& under the Personal Imports Scheme and your application fails to meet this scheme by:

• Applicants are only allowed one personally imported vehicle every 5 years.

• You had a personal import approval granted 4/6/2010 so are ineligible to import another vehicle under this scheme.

anyway its of no consequence to me as i only wanted to see the reply as there is so many questions unanswered fully.

i will argue the point to them and see what the outcome will be as the new rules where implemented on Nov/2012 and has now effected vehicle bought prior to personal imports rule change and also included any previous imports imported before the rule change and see what the reply is.

Although i think i have a valid argument i dont think they will easily change there minds.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I am curious on this one too. I currently live in Japan, and am planning to wind up my time here later this year. I have a JDM DC2R that I plan to bring back as a personal import, yet I also want to privately import back a pre-1989 car (under the '88 or older rule) at the same time. I MAY also pick up a JZX100 Chaser Tourer V and bring that back as a SEVS car too (my big hurrah to bring back 3 cars when I leave Japan).

My one burning question is this - does the "1 car in 5 years" deal apply ONLY to personal imports owned and used abroad by myself? Or does it apply to ALL forms of imports... thereby forcing me to choose one out of my 'Teg, Chaser (sevs) and the pre-'89 car?

Only applies to the car you bring in as a "personal import".

You can bring in as many cars as you like via SEVS without being restricted by a "time ban".

So you can bring your DC2R in as personal import, then the other two as SEVS vehicles with no worries.

    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
    • Thanks @jtha7 I will have a look around tomorrow but it is a prick of a spot. These are some photos i tried taking
    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
    • Hi @Chupapy i had several leaks from coolant pipes being corroded, i also had one leak on back of the head onto transmission. For me that leak was from the turbo water line. Follow the line to the back of the head The hose and metal pipe had perished these are the best pics I took of it at the time
