Silencing Exhuast, How To?

ok everyone ive got an r32 gtst with a 3 inch exhuast, decat pipe and large cannon at the back, i think the brand of the system is trust, it is loud and i need to make it quiet for defect clearance,

i have got a cat to put in it so that is that sorted but i still will need to quieten it,

i heard of using a plate cut to the size of the flange at one of the joins with holes drilled into it to limit flow

anyone done this before?

also any othger ideas?

im talking cheap/easy/DIY stuff

You can get a silencer made up for the muffler but make sure it is welded in not bolted in or they can knock it back saying it can be removed and not pass it.

Or

Get you mechanic to fabricate a Resonator in the exhaust system.

Or

Get the stock R32 GTS-T exhaust, put on a compliance cat (non high flow) and fabricate a Resonator if needed to lower the dB level as much as possible.

Once past, return back to how you want it.

1x Cat

2x Mufflers, and i dont mean cheap ones. you are looking @ $400-$600ea.

No big cannon mufflers

No 'hot dogs'

No decat pipes.

You should be smack on legal. Fix it right the first time, get the exhaust made so it is quiet.

Had a stupid loud exhaust on my old car returning it back to standard made it so much more enjoyable (although was non-turbo car and only a cat-back exhaust so negligible performance gains/losses to be had). Want to get an exhaust for the 34 but wanna keep it fairly quiet unless of cause i'm going WOT and higher revs.

Similar question, I have an RB30DET with full 3 inch straight pipe from the turbo back to a 5 inch HKS super dragger muffler. I went to the exhaust shop today to ask the same quesitons but they were closed, would adding just a single resonator in the middle of the exhaust system make the car quieter and sound a bit gruntier/throatier/deeper? I want a nice growl but it needs to be quiet to pass a warrant of fitness.

^ forget it. Hotdogs etc etc, pointless on RB's. I've not seen one that does any good.

Piss of the cannon. Put two decent 3.5" mufflers on (might as well increase your 3" to 3.5").

Mine really does sound quite nice under load. Just cruising around, you can barely hear it as im sure most Vic people that have seen it can attest, it's not "camry" quiet, but its as quiet as a HSV or similar just putting around, yet gives a nice little growl when you get up it a bit.

I tried forever adding/changing mufflers and resonators on my old S15 to shut it up, and all efforts were pointless. Under advice i gave up and got a HKS silent power catback. Best move ever, stock sound until 4.5k, and nice growl up high. Not exactly ghetto fix, but it is a quality long term fix. The Nismo item is very similar in nature on my RB26, very impressive for a cannon.

Cheap way out is to flange the rear and add a large oval bodied muffler (2.5" even better), may not look pretty, but you should pass with that.

HKS Hi Power "Silents" On RB's are not silent at all. And IMHO, the lower the RPM the louder it is.

I have one on my RB25, and its far from quiet. comparing it to stock sound would be like comparing black to white.

I've got a quality JASMA exhaust on my R33, its silent throughout the rev range. Has 2 mufflers and a cat, plus 3in piping. Thats one option. Otherwise, my mate had some success with putting some plates in his exhaust to take it over the pits.

The HKS silent hi power is quite silent on most car models including most skylines EXCEPT for R32 and R33 GTR/ GTS-t

for some reason the exhaust inner diameter for these models is 95mm, for every other turbo cars they're only 85mm or less

Wow i actually never realized that.

I never measured mine, but it doesnt look like it has a 3.7inch inner!

Could be wrong though, id have to measure it. Sounds massive!

the first time I threw a super drager type rear muffler on my straight pipe ( was called 'megaphone' no idea what brand), and it was kosher, second time went a second hand JASMA exhaust - thinking about buying another reasonably loud exhaust, and swapping over as need be.

yeah it does actually, I've measured mine..

the diameter gets larger as it goes to the cannon, 3 inch from the cat to the hotdog, then 3.7 from hotdog to the square flange (longest section), then 4 inch after the last flange...

The HKS silent hi power for EVO, R34 GTT/GTR, silvia turbo are only 85mm all the way... and they're really quiet in comparison

ok so thanks for all the replies, i am aware that a muffler will quieten it,

but i am looking for a more cheapskate approach,

i have heard mixed ideas of perferated plates and such anyone done this beforE?

      Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.       My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.

      Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno

      Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.

      BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
