this thread is going to go for a while. Also have a look at some of the PC build threads in here for some good advice and some builds that are prob what you are after.

Some good online stores already have decent PC's made at a good price

www.netplus.com.au

www.scorptec.com.au (i have not used em so not sure)

www.ple.com.au

www.pccasegear.com.au (not pre built systems but if you want to make one my purchases from there have always resulted in me being a very happy customer)

i7 920 D0 stepping - $350

GA-EX58-UD3R - $250

Corsair HX750 - $250

ATi 5870 - $500

G.Skill or Kingston DDR3 PC16000 - $250

Lian Li Armorsuit PC-P50 - $250

Prolimatech Megahalems Rev. B - $90 (you'll need a fan as well $20, Scythe Slipstream 1900)

~$1950

With that setup, overclocked , would be the current PC to put together if i were to build a solid gaming box that won't need upgrading within the next 2 years.

Games will run on full settings, full AA, the works. So the will look as good as they can

Honestly id say get a 24", BenQ ones are like $200-$220.

ok thanks for that ash, where do u buy your parts from? aparently theres a really cheap place in boxhill just behind carrington st. are benq monitors any good? i was thinking mayb a samsung or hp

and 25Gtt im not after a already built pc, i wanna build my own...just as a project..just so i can learn.

www.staticice.com.au

Check pricing there, go to whoever is cheapest.

But also send places a full list and see if they will discount for you, you never know, which would save you going to 4 different once.

PCCG & MSY usually don't discount, but then generally they are the cheapest from what i've found.

Centrecom & Scorptec's pricing is higher than MSY/PCCG usually.

Nothing wrong with BenQ - im using a 24" one happily for over 12 months now.

The other monitors are just overpriced. At the end of the day they are all a "TN" panel, so $240 is all you should spend as there are always monitors "on special"

Unless you are going a IPS/S-IPS panel but then for a 24" you are looking @ $800. If you aren't doing graphic design, where colours are SUPER important, they aren't worth the coin :D

Personally, i'd be snapping this up while it's on sale

You can't seem to get 24" in 16:10 (better for gaming) anymore, i think i got the last of the 16:10 24" ones on the market - but still 16:9 is perfectly fine

I have a Samsung 2443BW which is 16:10 and is still listed on PCCG, but they are phasing out.

ATi 5870 - $500

Honestly id say get a 24", BenQ ones are like $200-$220.

Yeah, if going single screen a 24" or 1920x1200 (/1080) res should be your minimum for that GPU. Otherwise the ATi HD5850 will more than suffice.

^ Ah, true that. But double the price of the BenQ - but nowhere near double the quality!

I also agree, it'll be 1900/1200(1080) @ a min, depending on monitor choice that might be the highest res.

Even a 5850 would perform very nicely on such a monitor, guess depends if you want upgrade again in 12 months or not.

If the budget is tight and you want to save $120 then a 5850 would without a doubt still perform excellent for the task at hand.

GPU's are a long way ahead of games at present so there is some nice headroom with most new fab cards.

I'd go R31Nismoid's deal of box, that's dirt cheap for what it is.

I just bought a dual core 2.93 (E7500) with 4 g of ram, 9800GT video card, 1tb hdd etc for about $700, and it seems to play my games quite nicely. I usually buy one of something like this per year, and retire the older box as some form of movie server, web server, etc.

That said i have often found centrecom will match msy prices at the counter if you ask...Which is handy for me cause centrecom is close msy is a drive :D

^^ A PC for the fool :)

Over spec'd parts, that offer no better performance than cheaper ones... he who pays for that, be a sucker!

Ye they usually match, friend of mine goes there and always gets matched.

Comes down to who is closer :D

whirpool.net has alot of pc configuration and they usually update it to budget and what you will do with it.

but when you buy your lcd make sure it fits your table. i had to use a different table because my old one broke. and i have a 24 inch and it too big for this smaller table so it has to sit kind of sidways to fit on the table.

    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
    • Pull codes via the self-diagnosis procedure. As far as I can tell this is just a sign of transmission issues but not a code unto itself.
