I've been riding for the past 14 years on the road.

I've only had a car for the past 3 years. Prior to that I was 100% bike. I'm actually bikeless at the moment after my CBR spun a big end a while ago.

IMO don't pussy foot around on 600s. If you're an idiot you'll kill yourself just as fast on a 600 as you will on a 1000. I've ridden both, extensively, and the extra power of a thou is not only brain numbingly addictive but often a heaven sent on the road.

As for which one to get - be it a GSXR, CBR, R1 or ZX (assuming you get a jap) - seriously, they are a much of a muchness. People who tell you one is better than the other is either completely full of shit or Shawn Giles. Ride them, pick the one that felt best under your ass.

If you're not completely set on a sportsbike you could look at something like a second hand Ducati Hypermotard. A total hooligan bike. Or if they are bit on the pricey side I know about 6 people who own late model Speed Triples and they generally can't stop grinning like complete lunatics 100% of the time.

There are so many good bikes out there that it's hard to go wrong.

At the end of the day ask yourself if you are too stupid to ride a bike? If you can honestly answer "no" then go and get whatever floats your boat. Don't worry if it has 100cc or 2300cc.

I have both and honestly wish i bought the bike earlier. Having both makes you enjoy each of them so much more, especially the car since you don't have to drag it everywhere and park it in places you dont want to.

Will be upgrading to an 09 R6 soon and can not wait ;)

If my back wasn't made of chalk I would still have my 1986 GSX-R 1100 Slabbie, Mark is sad now, stupid back.

Mate, ride through it.

My wrists don't bend back more than about 30 degrees, my back is rooted, my hips are f**ked, but I'll never stop riding.

Just get something a bit more upright. My next bike will be something like a B-King, Hypermotard or CB1000.

Go the big bike because everybody you speak to who aren't soft wish they just spent the extra and bought the 1000. A 600 could spit you off and a 1000 is the same. Its all in the right hand... If your a hack and going to stack it doesn't matter what your on it going to happen anyway. Loose in the steering shouldn't make you highside Charlie. Might spit you off but thats called headshake. Just power out of it. Back off and you stack. If thats what you mean? A highside is when your under power out of corners and the back sides out and bites.

I couldn't disagree more, I work in the industry and we sponsor heaps of racers, most of the racers I know enjoy 600's more and are faster on them. It makes a massive difference between 600 and 1000. That power difference can mean a huge speed difference that can define your ride and your accident. Less power means nothing, technique is the key.

If I powered out of the head shake the rear tyre would loose traction therefore causing a high side. Backing off usually kept me out of trouble. Having a better handling bike did even better.

jap bikes sound horn with the right exhaust like an akrapovic or yoshimura....

Akrapovic are the best!!! They make a full system for the GTR as well you know <3 about 9k

OMG CHARLI! Are you ok? Was there permanent damage? That's horrible! Were you wearing full leathers at the time? I can't believe that happened to you, I hear stories a bit but recently people I know are actually getting to accidents like one of my old HS bro's lost part of his leg because of a bad bike accidents, it's why I don't think I'd go anywhere without full leathers, I'm actually looking at getting a HitAir Jacket have you seen them? Yea Gixxers were on the table for me at one point but it's exactly what I heard about the steering that sort of put me off them. I might go see if I can test drive a Daytona or and a Gixxer just for the feel as I've already driven the CBR and quite like it a lot. I just need to get a helmet and leathers of my own, which I'll probably do after the GOR cruise (are you coming btw?) Hahah don't you start, my friends go for cruises all the time, and I haven't been in ages, i'm sooo itch'n for a bike cruise right now.

Yeah I'm ok :D I still have a massive scar and a plate holding my big bone in my arm together. I was wearing full leathers. ATGATT, All the gear all the time. Yeah I have 2 girlfriends that had accidents and they both had deep laserations to their legs... not pretty.

Not going to the GOR Cruise.. not actually a member yet :D couldn't make it anyway, and will join soon!

yeah 600s are lighter, handle better and generally have a quicker takeoff than 1000s..... well generally

its same thing in cars you can have hundreds and hundreds of kw/hp, but if you cant put it down then whats the point, especially if a less powerful car can out handle it and then will be faster

Stick with the CBR600! Honda is the most user friendly of all the jap bikes hands down, also stick with the jap brands if you do decide on something else as parts are a dime a dozen and are reliable unlike the "D" brand eveybody wants that has never ridden a bike before.

Ive been ridding bikes for 12 years and have had over 20 bikes from all brands, and as a rough guide-

Speed= Yamaha

User friendly/reliability = HONDA

Tourque= SUZUKI

Last years technology= This years KAWASAKI :D

Wank factor= DUCATI/APRILIA/MV AUGUSTA

SIF wank factor. You gimme a Yam R1 that sounds the same as a Duc with a nice open clutch and exhaust (not Termi's, they are junk) and i'll buy it. :D

as for going the 1000cc as opposed to the 600cc,

if ur not gonna compete at track days all that much y not go a newer gsxr 750, has the 600cc body but a 750cc engine as far as iv been lead to believe.

only reason i say about the track thing is that i dont think there is a proper class for the 750. but yeah road wise defs 750, ull have more fun than on a 1000cc cause u get to give it more stick :D, wish i had of gone the 750 over the 1000 lol

lol, I reckon almost anyone here has "wanted" or "wants" to get a bike. I was looking into licences the other week. Group buy?

+1

Definitely be interested in a SAU group license session lol

Well like all things - how does the body HANDLE the extra motor would be the question.

Sometimes power/torque increases could unsettle the entire package :D

Italian bikes are good, and a lot of people swear by them... but I still kick their arses on an 8k Honda :D

V-Twins do sound nice but it depends on what you want... When I rode the 1098 my legs were itching from the massive vibrations after 10 minutes (because of v-twin), and a really poor design flaw they have is you can't full lock the steering without jamming your hand between faring and handlebar, and I have thin hands! Not very friendly on commuters. As for handling when you get to specifics they definitely rule, but you pay the price of course.

Might as well get an S1000RR for a lower price and WAAAAAAY more awesome factor. uhu yup yeah, definitely. If they make a baby beamer I'm getting one. :D

Bit off topic... something (probably silly) my mates and I thought off while having some beers :)

What if there was a 2WD sports bike with an ATTESA style system......

Would it be the GT-R of bikes????

They've actually been made before lol. Issue at hand is in launching the bike - there is a point where you will lift the front tyre no matter how much you lean, thereby making it one wheel drive again lol. Not sure if it's help out in the corners or not. The 2WD bikes I have seen are usually sporting mud tyres for traction on slippery surfaces like mud. It would certainly help in the wet on the road.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
