hey guys

leaving work tonight, got in the car started fine pulled out drove 3-4 kms up the road and stopped at a red light.

took off quickly to get infront of the car next to me as i was merging (definately far from drag racing) reached about 70kph and the car started to shudder and stall. it came to a stop and died.

- the car starts but only lasts a few seconds, however it doesnt quite idle and just dies and you can't rev it to catch it. just dies.

- it has plenty of fuel in it

so it has spark, fuel, power, starter.... everything. i dont know what it could be.

any thoughts or anyone experienced this?

im going to tow it to Nissan tomoz as there is one close to my work. - hopefully nothing major.

might be the AFM.....see if there is a difference when it's unplugged and you start it.

Funny, ive never heard of a decent (read VQ) afm getting dry joints, still it could be. Was it out in the rain? The hotwire could have gotten wet?

Are you running the powerduct? That could let water in from the front.

lol....smart arse.....Danny's died mid flight a while back!....mind you he had just put a Stillen set up on.

i am running powerduct. so whats the theory? water has gotten in and messed with the AFM?

i doubt fuel pump. i can hear it when i turn the key to accessories sounds as it does always.

Check the intercooler end tanks haven't burst too.

Either way there are parts around. I have Craigs intercooler down here if you need it. lol

I also have the stock pump in a box somewhere.

someone's a parts whore!!!! :D

its at work locked up for the night.

so ill try to start it again in the morning - hoping its water in the AFM.

if not ill have to tow it to Nissan.

ill let you know how i go scotty and if i need any parts.

cheers

Just a whore in general I think.

Not much need for them now eh Craig? :D

I don't think it will be the crank angle sensor. When that fails the motor just turns off.... there is no in between, it runs then it stops.

The loss of power and shudder sounds more like a leak in the intercooler piping. I remember seeing Danny's car going like that when a pipe popped off. He could start it but it would stall straight away.

ok well it started this morning.

its idleing but the engine light is on. and it wont rev very well.

the guy from nissan told me over the phone it sounds like its in "Limp Mode"

but Nissan dont want a bar of it. and claim they cant help.

AFM is stuffed would be my bet.

Happened to my mates M35. Run as rich as hell, idled poorly (obviously) and couldn't push it pas about 2200rpm.

I may have a second hand AFM lying around.... or you could just get an Xtrail's AFM from Nissan and plug it straight in (my mate has a 350z AFM which works fine)

i drove it home and swapped it with my motorbike for the day.

it has NO BOOST. so im guessing it is turbo/cooler related.

watching the gauge it moves up but when it gets near 0 it starts to shudder.

so could it be a rooted cooler?

    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
