Means that HKS have done more then just put their actuators on garrett -9s?

The add doesnt mention -9s - that's something you've read into it. You appear to have assumed the HKS statements are in comparison to -9s, which is not correct.

do the GTSS's still carry different internal specs over the -9s?

No. They come out the same factory(s) (Garrett's factories around the world, my -9's came from their Mexico factory etc), it wouldn't make sense if Garrett built the entire complete turbo to HKS' specs (minus actuator), and then for HKS to just go and open them up and change it again.

Not doing English correctly?! At no point did I mention that they are magically bigger. I am basically only asking whether this sentence:

The clearance and shape of the compressor wheel, compressor housing and turbo housing are redesigned to optimum specs.

Means that HKS have done more then just put their actuators on garrett -9s?

Yes you did, you copied the ad - which is comparing GT-SS to factory turbos. NOT to Garrett -9s

HKS and Garrett items are identical.

No. They come out the same factory(s) (Garrett's factories around the world, my -9's came from their Mexico factory etc), it wouldn't make sense if Garrett built the entire complete turbo to HKS' specs (minus actuator), and then for HKS to just go and open them up and change it again.

Cheers Lance

I didnt know garrett made the turbo to HKS SPECS, i asumed that HKS got the turbo's from garrett and from that sentence i posted earlier... I misconstrued to be HKS putting their own internals in. (Just like -5s to 2530s)

Anyone that says GT-SS & -9s are different, is full of shit.

The only difference is the actuator - HKS supply it with the kit. With Garrett you need to order.

GT-SS were under licence from Garrett for a few years, and thus -9s only came onto the market by Garrett around 3-4 years ago where previously you could ONLY by then from HKS - with the ridiculous mark up.

2530s and -5s however there IS a difference in the wheels, and this is signified by the different CHRA numbers and ID tags.

Hks Gtss CHRA = 446179-65

Garrett -9 CHRA =446179-65

Same CHRA number means same ball bearing center WITH same size/spec wheels attached, and as we already know the comp and turbine housings have the same A/R between the two.....

Sooo.....Go have a beer, and reminisce on the good ole days

Out of interest I was told by a turbo whore friend who used to have a bedroom full of car parts that the HKS turbo use a steel ball bearing cage where as the Garret are plastic. Any truth to it or maybe that was one of the things that differentiated the 2530 and -5s

Ok thank you GOJIR4, I just saw the GT2860 and thought I was in the right place.

Yes I'm aware that the turbo is not a bolt on, the reason for my queston was because the factory air intake was on when the car was bought. I guess thats why its now carcked and has a rough idle, some one has fitted a 2.5 over a 3inch (must have heated it up).

Thread bump. Great thread guys!

Ive had -5s and GTSS, the -5s felt exhilarating whereas the GTSS IMO were boring. But like many have suggested, depends on your application.

I'm pulling off my GTRS snails at the moment...what fun that is working out of the engine bay.

Mine is far from a weekender which is sad but true.

GTSS setup made 325awkw @ 23psi

-5 setup made 340rwkw @ 19psi (I question this though as that number sounds a bit high, maybe a happy dyno?)

Throw those RS' s in the dumpster where they belong!!!!

If anything, that's a tad on the lower side. Ash made 365 ish at around 19 psi IIRC.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
