Any motorbike store will have cheap options for you, both closed and open face. For more race oriented helmets, maybe checkout Revolution Racegear. Don't recommend skimping on helmet though...it's insurance for your head, the only barrier between your brain and a big chunk of metal...think about it

Hard call man. I only really know about motorbike helmets, of which I would say the average helmet will cost you $350-500 for a good one with some nice ventilation features and quite comfortable protection that moulds to the shape of your head. They can be as cheap as $90 for a one size fits all basic open faced stack hat...and as expensive as $1000-1500 for ultra light weight fancy dancy stuff.

Keep in mind that all helmets are single use, i.e. if you drop your helmet onto a hard surface from a decent height, it is recommended you replace it due to damaged structural integrity...they have an impact absortion that works effectively once and once only. This is why buying second hand helmets is a bad idea because you don't know the history. Also usually the motivation for skimping on the cost because it's like carrying around a glass vase. But it's also like choosing whether your seatbelt is made out of a cotton wool strand or a nylon strap. The beauty about being a helmet manufacturer is you don't have any liability if someone dies - ADR's aren't that strict either.

Budget and safety gear don't belong in the same sentence. If it's just some motorkhana sort of stuff then that's no biggie, but when you're hitting a track...even the pros don't skimp

Oops, that turned into a bit of a rant. I just get pissed off when I see motorcyclists riding along in shorts, thongs, a singlet and a $90 helmet...

Yea there are real cheap options from like $100 for a car I wouldn't worry to much about it unless it's for a bike where mines $600 (On Special) cause it's a Shoei I saw some $1500 brand new racing Shoeis the main difference was substantially more airflow and amazing graphic designs

Good store make sure you visit their clearance center though, substantially lower prices

Main difference between cheap helmets and expensive ones are mostly in weight and comfort, not safety.

Well, that's what the guy who sold my helmet told me.

It is true, but after you wear a $100 helmet for a couple of laps your gonna wish you bought something that is more comfortable or with more vents if your in a track car with no climate control

Well I dunno about the safety vs cost thing...I'd be more inclined to believe that cheap helmet manufacturers spend about as much time on the safety design as they do creature comforts. ADR's are not difficult to meet at all and the cheap helmets certainly will not exceed standards. If answering the question which you'd rather have a fall/crash in...a $100 helmet or a $500 helmet...who would actually choose the former? You can make back the extra $400 with the brain you save...not so easy to recover your brain after damage

Thanks for the replies, now that you mention it helmets are annoying after wearing them for a while so probably want something comfortable when you ripping around the track. Ill go check them out at some stores

This is my helmet I bought from Revolution Racegear : http://www.revolutionracegear.com.au/index...rimary&CDO=

Its a fantastic helmet, very comfey. As has been mentioned before Its insurance for your head, can you really put a price on that. Hopefully you never need to use your helmet the way it's been designed but in the event you do, you want to make sure its going to work.

I use this.

Much better quality in terms of build and comfort than the Elcheapo $100 units.

It has more face protection than the cheaper open face helmets and I was told is made in the Bell factory (by Revolution Racegear), the older Bell model with RPM branding which was $900 when branded and sold as a Bell helmet.

It also has the higher snell approval rating.

How much better it is I don't know but the foam was thicker than the $100 units the case is not plastic and after wearing a number of helmets riding bikes ect for extended periods of time this has been the best helmet for comfort and snug fit for my head I have owned.

All helmets are approved safety wise... don't worry too much about price, as long as the company has a rep and its about $200 or over it will be safe enough. MORE IMPORTANTLY: Find a helmet that fits your head right! Buying a $1200 Arai isn't going to save you if it's the wrong shape or too big. ALWAYS go for the tighter fit as they loosen up heaps!

I use this ICON Airfram Clamore Black

RRP $449.95, a great fit for me with Carbon/Kevlar shell, and the best Fog Free visor around.

They also do a less fancy helmet for $189.95, perfectly safe and actually really good looking in the flesh.

Personally I wouldn't bother buying a Shoei or Arai as no brand is perfect, they have had problems and the difference in safety is marginal.

If you want to know good dealers to buy from let me know

If u dont wanna spend to much on a helmet and just want it for the track... This is a good pace to pick up one.. The cheapest i have found... I got the same one!! -> http://www.crazysales.com.au/xracer-motorc...-red_p1679.html

That would be like wrapping your head twice with bubble wrap and saying its enough protection..

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
