Hey

Ive been reading these forums for a couple of months and haven't had anything to contribute to or question until now.

I am almost eligble to recieve my p's, therefore im currently searching for cars. Im from NSW so cant have turbo.

What i want in my car

• Look the part
  
• Non turbo
  
• Resonably quick for the track (after some mods)
  
• Under $10k
  

I have always liked skylines (R34 GTR = Dream car, but obviously cant have ) so have really considerd the r33 gts as well as the r32 gts, but have failed to find stats for these cars and have no idea on their performance. Ive heard negative reviews as well. Could i have some stats on these cars and experiances/reviews??????

Also if the non turbo skylines are no good then im open to here some other suggestions for cars that would fit my criteria.

My first car was a 1989 series 3 R31 skyline sedan.

i brought it bog stock and auto.

These come with the RB30E eng READ NON TURBO.

i found it realy good as a first car as they are easy to work and when driving you have do all the driving thier are now other computers or safty systems in the car apart from the ECU (And AUTO computer if auto)

You can easerly upgrade to turbo eng when you get off your p's or put another RB eng in with out to much hassel.

gear boxs are easy to fit with the RBDET box bolting straight up and some slight moderfying (to the firewall) for the RB25DET box.

in the end i had 120RWKW after doing full exhaust system, pod filter, nistune ecu, custom crow cam. and changed to a RB20DET manual box. my best would have being 15.5sec.

as for body thier are a few body kits getting around now.

suspeiontion. thier are a few options, and coilovers are now avalable.

I would recermend this is a first car as they are cheep (from 1k to 5k)

my first car was a pulsar sss. i had a great time learning in it. personally, if it were me, i would get a nice non turbo nissan (skyline, silvia, pulsar) and enjoy it, and instead of spending money on it to be "reasonably quick for the track", save you money for when you get off your p's. although taking your car to a track day is amazing fun, its also expensive, and for me i would be tossing up between spending money on a non turbo daily driver to create a track car, or keeping it fairly stock and saving my money for a turbo charged version to be a far better track car once off your p's. these are just my views mate, but any advice is good advice. cheers adam

i would also suggest to not go blowing too much money on your NA car, save it for the turbo car you want after you get off your p's.

when/if you want to sell it, it'll probably be worth a bit more than if it had exahust/wheels etc etc.

look at AE86's ive driven na and t skylines and my sprinter is so much fun and it will hold its value one you come of age and can buy a turbz.

also if you want something for the track they will work out costing less in parts if something goes wrong as well as tyres, 14-15" FTW!

R33 gts or n/a Z32 300zx. The VG30DE has heaps of go in it for an n/a motor

yeh i'd be looking into an r type honda aswell, just to be different, and apparently they have a bit of kick in them (vtec yo?).

didnt know you could get anything decent for under 10k though

R31 altho old and granpa spec are a very good first car.

decent power for a new driver cheep and RWD.

if you want big speed probably go a supra, i have a mate making more rwkw in his supra than me in my gtt

if you want for the track would wont care what it looks like.

MX5. for an NA car, you can set some decent times.

look for something light(not skyline), manual(otherwise why take it to the track), good suspension not looks.

R31 skylines sound like good cars and they slipped my mind, however i dont rate the shape of the r31 and most of them would be pushing 20 yrs old now.

The pulsar sss and ae86 sounds like a cheaper option which i might take if my funds prevent me from purchasing a larger car like a skyline.

With silvias i really only like the s15's but they are expansive and out of my price range. I think the same can be said about the mark IV supras which i love, with cheap n/a's going for just over 10k.

They are quick,and look good. My friends bro has a FAST n/a supra but he spent 17k for hes first car.

xALmoN- how much are you selling your supra for??????

Mx5's look good and are in my price range and are light as well. they seem like a good option. Anyone got some performance stats on it????

The mx6 looks a bit standard but produces a decent amount of power. Not a bad option. Maybe some stats on this as well please.

I also want to ask about n/a Subaru Impreza's and n/a Toyota Mr2's as ive looked into them abit and seem like some good options.

Also, my intention is too buy a decent n/a powered daily, which looks good, which i can take too the track every now and then for some fun. Not a specialised track car.

ONE more question. The AWD or RWD skyline r33/r32 better. I know the AWD adds a fair bit of weight but does it even out with the added advantage

wiki mate, great for the basics, and i posted those threads above so you'd have more info, this has all been well covered in their last few pages.

mx6 has one of the highest non-turbo power to weight ratios for a good price, and with a subtle body kit they actually look pretty good, do a google images search.

subaru impreza's, the 2.5's, are actually light and powerful if you get the right generation of rs or rx, but they're expensive.

there are also some 90s civics which rev high and pull a good few kw, they're popular for races (cant remember the formula)

mx5's are known as the classic roadster, top gear love them. they're small and 2 seat, just like the mr2 (mid engined) both are no doubt heaps of fun.

i love track stuff, but ive only done karting (haha selling one if you want some real speed ) but when funds are available and im not at uni i'll prob get into something like mx5/mr2/whatever racing. there are dedicated formulas for mx5's and maybe some others, worth looking up if you're keen.

on the awd vs rwd thing, one day you'll be driving down a highway in insane rain and if you're in a rwd you'll be wondering if awd was the way to go. happened to me last week on the syd-to-newcastle highway, was quite scary in my gtt haha.

r31's are old and don't have abs and airbags (i drive heaps so im keen on these), the sss pulsar has the amazing sr20 and the ae86 is ridiculously nimble. just make sure you test drive a bunch of cars and you'll know what suits you.

if you want big speed tho, its supra or skyline, haven't ever seen someone boasting track times in a na 300zx tho, but maybe i haven't been looking hard enough. the 2 door manual na 300zx has a pretty big power-to-weight ratio

you serious? tare weight is about 1450kg which could be concidered light but these days but really its not, especially when so much of the weight is in the front.

inconspicuous? never, especially with an exhaust.

fast if you want to go in a straight line just don't think about stopping or turning, the car was never built for that.

(and yes, i drove one for 2.5years)
