so from the opinions it seems big power the gtr is a benefit and if lower power then its not worth carrying the extra weight and costs.

So what power can a 2wd chassis handle comfortably and get power down around a track before traction becomes an issue on semi slicks? 350rwkw+ i assume would be better in a 4wd chassis?

I think the point is more so that in an lighter car you wont need 350rwkw to turn the same lap time as a GT-R with that much power and you'll have spent less money.

As much as I hate it, those are the cold hard facts.

I know what your saying, but what if the engine combo is capable of that without reliability issues, then im sure running 250rwkw is only gonna cut it for so long when you know its got alot more in it. Whatever you have power wise its never enough in my opinion after a while, unless lag becomes an issue which isnt until over 450kw + range. I remember when 200rwkw felt quick and now i think 350kw is alright, and 450kw is fast but depends what your used to i suppose.

A gtst gets to a point power wise where the gtr is going to start having an advantage, im just asking at what power level in a gtst is too much to use it effectively?

Keep it simple, you already have one of the best budget racing platforms:

1. Keep the S13, convert to SR, or mod the CA18DET to 200-250rwkw's.

2. Convert to 5 stud

3. Get some big fat wheels and fill those guards with as much good semi slick tyre

4. Go out and blitz it with a smile on your dial!

5. Keep modding it until it's totally off tits and then when you're old and grey and can't get in and out of the thing from bad arthritis :D

Or, sell the S13 and buy an S14 if you couldn't be stuff modding your S13 more.

Won't be keeping this, as I mentioned. I also want to be able to drive it on the weekends occasionally and no offense to S13 lovers, but this car isn't good for much else besides thrashing on the track. Later model S-Chassis maybe but they're just not for me as a street car.

Here is the thing about rwd. I actually love the tad lazier power delivery of the Trust turbos. The hit of power and torque is a little softer then with the ball bearing oh-ahh turbos (IMO) which makes them easier to drive on the throttle.

So rather then look at a power figure where rwd becomes a limiting factor, consider the torque characteristics of the engine. (Another reason why i rate the RB20, they can still make 420hp or so and dont turn tyres like the bigger RBs) Also consider that if you are going to bigger cc RB engines, consider the diff ratio you are using. If you have the torque, then use it to your advantage and gear the car so that you are not frying tyres or forever changing gears.

Also re traction, the usual diff, and quality of suspension gets called into question. So something decent normally suffices. But to me if driving a rwd car then pay attention to how the pros drive them. They use higher gears almost everywhere to what people expect. You may not have that instant hit of power on exit, but the ability to settle the car mid corner helps you carry corner speed and the less aggressive final drive using the taller gear means you are on the loud pedal spooling up the turbo and not on-off with wheelspin and oppo lock. I think all too often people are jumping on the loud pedal in their rwd cars at the same point as the EVO and GTR boys who are trying to make up for the fact that they are normally slower accross the face of the corner. You just need to be more patient in a rwd car

Remember that most Nissan rwd cars weigh less then GT3 Pokas, which make about 230-250rwkws (typically from what i have seen) Sure Dynamically and chassis wise the Porka is in a different league and rear engine helps their rwd traction....but pays to remember 350rwkws is truly a buck load of power with very few exotic cars making that power.

I love the S13 but would prefer the S14/15. Bang for buck all the S cars are brilliant.

However it sounds like you have your heart set on a GTR so just buy one. You can always sell it :D

It seems like the only thing stopping you is your ego! Leave that at the door cause no matter what car you get there is always someone faster.

Ego went out the door a long time ago, it's more a case of the $$. Like most of us, I'm not rich and I do my own work to keep costs down so the appeal of an S-Chassis is obvious, hence starting with one.

Damn money...

Hah, Pretty much because I can see good reason in both points of view.

I've love the lightness and cheapness of the S13 and there is something to be said for going along to a track day and being just .2 of a second off an M5 that's only a couple of years old, we all know it's a super heavy GT style car but it's expensive and it's got power so I got a buzz from that. At the same time he got in that M5 and cruised home like he'd been out for a Sunday drive, gotta appreciate that.

On the other hand, I loved my GT-R but part of that was that I'd bought it modified and didn't have it quite long enough to ever have any major dramas with it, that and it was only mild tune 250awkw so not heaps should go wrong at that power. Sure I had to put some AFM's on it, common issue, and the parts cost for service items weren't awesome (because I wanted to treat it right). But the fun I had on the track tangling with much lesser powered WRX's coupled with driving it to work from time to time just to hear it scream down the on ramp was hard to match, I don't get that same feeling from the Silvia but it's a "dirty track car". At the same time, pulling into the pits, I thought, how the hell does a 2000 model WRX with only 160-170awkw keep up with my car on the straights. I've got 2 more cylinders, an extra turbo and this car new cost literally 3 times as much as the WRX. The answer of course is weight. My car wasn't that much more expensive than his at the time so it wasn't too bad and I did over take him so I at least felt justified in my GT-R ownership.

It really is a tough one and when the time comes it will likely depend on what's around, what frame of mind I'm in and how much money I have to play with. No doubt the S14 option is much cheaper in basically every way, but It's not the sort of car I see myself taking for a weekend cruise so it should be cheaper as it'll be performing one less function for me. Some people might not get that but with the exception of the S15, I don't see Silvia's as great streeters, they're a bit small and a bit coarse. That's a personal thing though as I've taken my antics off the street now so I don't want something quite so raw for sunday cruising.

Buy a GTR. It's what you want.

Agreed!

Despite all of this RWD love going on here I have to say that Jack's (JAGR33) 33 GT-R is still the nicest feeling car I've ever driven, so if you're happy with the budget then get what you want.

ok I have a stupid question that has been bothering me for the last couple of days reading this thread...

is it possible (and legal?) to tow a track car with an R33 GTR?   I was thinking that you could ditch your falcon tow car, ditch the rego on the s13, and have a nice street car while keeping your budget track car...

I can't see why it wouldn't be legal, but putting a tow pack on a GT-R seems criminal... It'd be an expensive tow car too fuel and service costs wise.

To add to the GT-R expense.. I would need a the next rated tow pack up to tow the GT-R behind the Fairmont =\ I only have the standard 1600kg pack, would need the 2300kg pack for an GT-R.

Thanks Marlin, I thought that would be the case...

Curse you ActionDan, this whole thread has pointed out to me that I simply can't afford to track my R32 GT-R (which currently has a broken RB26 in it) on my modest income. I sympathize with your heart vs head conundrum :(

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
