the hicas in 33 is electronic not hydraulic as in 32. There for it has a controller in the boot. Its bolted to the underside of the parcel shelf. I have ran lock bars in multiple 33 skylines and can tell u this.... Removal of the eletric steering rack in order to install lock bar will work perfectly fine as long as u dont unplug the controller in the boot. I run a lock bar in my current track car and it was as simple as unbolting and unpluging rear rack and chucking lock bar in. Power steering and speed sensitive steering still works fine. If you unplug the control unit in boot u loose power steering. I think this is due to the speed sensors in the 33s steering. Screwing around with the steering angle sensor behind the steering wheel has the same effect.

Crawl under ur car and cable tie the rear steer plugs to your lock bar. Hopefully no one thought they should be cut off.

Get your head in the boot and make sure ur hicas control is still there and that it plugged in.

Pm me if ur still stuck there is a few other small things i can think of that may affect.

unplugged the control box in the boot and the hicas light is now gone, but powersteering has still not returned, think there mighta been sumthing wrong with one of the steering sensors as the light was on before i locked it and powersteering wasnt there either? what sensors could be faulty and how can i check them??

yer the fact u didnt mention that power steering wasnt working before the lock bar install changes everything lol. there is a steering agle sensor behind the steering wheel. there is a vehicle speed vs steering calculation done withing the hicas control unit.. so faulty unit. u could have low steering fluid. your power steering pump might have shit its self. i think from memory there is a plug behind the headunit thats related to steering angle sensor or speed sensitive steering... if its unplugged u loose power steering.

  • 6 months later...

is your speedo working fine?

You can go on youtube and look for HICAS diagnostic it will show you and tell you how to do it.

Basically but I think it is turn car on, steer left and right 10 times in 10 seconds (or something like that) hit the brake twice, drive forward a couple of metres, stop and hit the brake pedal again (may be clutch pedal instead of brake, like i said youtube it)

that will give you HICAS diagnostic. Most common problem as said is aftermarket steering wheel which gives the steering angle sensor incorrect readings, Mine did this casue my boss kit was installed slightly out of position and wasnt engaging instantly. Little things can make it stuff up but this never made my steering heavy just bought the HICAS light on

First things first, check your Power steering resivour is at the correct level, there are no leaks, and your power steering belt is the correct tightness

swap out the steering position sensor and the hicas ecu with known working units and see if either fixes your problem.

i did both, and it turned out to be the ecu in the boot.

i have a working steering position sensor for sale HERE.

  • 3 weeks later...

My power steering in my S1 R33 GTST died about 12 months ago. After a bit of research (mostly here on SAU) I grabbed a second hand Hicas ECU from an import wrecker, quickly plugged it in and went for a drive around the block to ensure it fixed the power steering, which it did. 20 Bucks later I was done!

I've always had an aftermarket steering wheel fitted, which means my hicas light has always permanently been on... I gotta get into the dash cluster and pull the bulb for the hicas light one day.

After the PS issue, I've since installed a Hicas lock bar which changed nothing with with the power steering... Just make sure you leave the Hicas unit connected, and zip tie the old plugs out of the way up around the hicas bar.

I'd be very surprised if doing the above doesn't fix your problem.

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
