Hi All,

Haven't been on here a good while but thought I would spread the worrisome news...there's been a recall on Repco branded axle / car stands, I think the latch is defective on them. Mate of a forum member on the Australian 300zx club was recently killed when these exact stands gave way and he was crushed to death.

I have a very similar set of Recpo stands that were also part of a package like above, but they are orange, 3T not 2 with a different, thicker latch handle and are 3-4 years old...still going to take them in though and have them checked...always better to be safe than very sorry :D

Cheers

Craig

I believe so, but I think any other brand stands with the same latching system would be worth investigating....I'm thinking I'll try and find a set like this, the pins would be far less likely to fail that a hinged latch...I think this is a good example where a simple system works better than an overcomplicated one, I wouldn't quite say the latch is overcomplicated but going back to basics is usually the best way to ensure its main purpose...keeping our DIY mechanics safe :whistling:

Yeah would have been pretty horrible Terry ...I'd say it's the actual event that led to the recall. Very unfortunate it wasn't picked up before something like that could happen.

Always used to throw the rims under on the old R31 when jacking but once I got the stands I stopped as I figured that was the safety net, most of the time leaving the car on the jack after just letting it down onto the stands so there wasn't any chance off them being knocked over either. There have been times I've taken the jack away though for access and then its solely the stands stopping me from being crushed ;)

Anyway, hope this helps stop any more tragedies from happening...spread it to any other Aussie car forums your a member of that hasn't heard of it yet, that's what I did as I'm pretty much 100% on the Aus300zx forum normally (as much as I hate being part of chain mail, I feel this is a little different :D).

Cheers,

Craig

Personally i'd never buy something like that from Repco/Supercheap/Other retail monster. Always go to a trade shop, better product and often will give a good discount if you ask nicely.

I've got a set of 6ton stands(no brand, trade shop ratchet type) and they're solid. I still put a few wheels under the car if i'm under it though. Never rely on just stands, no matter what brand or quality.

There's a foot operated jack at Repco that suits low lip cars.

It has two tines that stick out towards the front (like a fork lift).

It'll fit under anything that is 105mm off the ground.

Then when you look at the fine print and you think, WTF!!!

It's rated at only 650Kg which converts to 0.71ton. Don't get duped! It can only lift less than a quarter of a 3 ton trolley jack - for crying out loud!!!!!!

BTW Craig, tow your lovely R32 GT-R up to the 21st Anniv of R32 GT-R next month so that you can sell it here and we can gawk at it!

that is very sad to hear.

I've got 6 stands of that style....not sure if the recall relates to a manufacturing issue in their product, or a general issue with that ratcheting style?

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
