Hello People

Ive sold my WRX.. and am looking for a new car. My new car will be one of the above two.

Both have there strengths and weakness - im just looking for some honest opinions and advise (im not after bullshit claims).

I was going to get the GTR, but I have swung over the the evo 6.5 - due to the fact that they are:

* Aust Delievered (not import)

* Are very rear and are alot newer (2000 - 2001)

* Are more compact

* Are a fantastic handling car

* And have a fantastic engine with forged internals ( rb26 is great as well)

Opinions people, any advise, any gurus willing to share their knowledge or experience !!!

Feedback appricated.

Daniel

Dan,

Out of preference, I'd always go the GTR, but the EVO is a great package... albeit a little on the exxy side of things for a nice one... Take note of the interior too, it quite frankly isn't too flash.. and quite basic....

Whatever choice you make, it'll be a good one! You can't go wrong with either..

-Kym.

P.S. You have way too much fold mate! Wish I was in your shoes :)

you're doomed to get a biased set of answers here....

one way to think of it is who will be doing the work on it, and at what level of experience/cost/parts availability will any modifications be done?

the evo is an apparently an awesome car, and seems underrated.

but I don't know whether the evo would enjoy the same level of experienced tuning and parts availability at reasonable cost that the GTR would....?

Depends what its for. I've driven both and think they are both great but very different cars. If it was me it would depend on the application:

Daily Driver mainly - the Evo 6.5 TME

Weekend Fun car mainly - R33 GTR.

I was thinking more in terms of a/m stuff - and really more in terms of expertise than of parts. obviously the Aust delivered factor is gonna greatly improve avail. of factory parts items.

Like I said, I dont pretend to know the answer, but that's one of the bigger things I'd be concerned about. who in perth deals with evos on a regular basis?

In perth there is a ralliart GURU in Wleshpool who does all the ralliart vehicles then they come to perth for rally oz etc

for some friggin reason i have a mental blank, but its off welshpool road

I think that coming off a WRX the EVO tm will be a more confortable vehicle to drive. albeit alot more nimble than the wrx, and the rarity is something to look forward to.

Umm in terms of price wouldnt you be closer to an R34 GTR instead of an R33. And the active Yaw control in the evo is supposed to be worth the dosh

and what about an M3..tee hee hee

Well the way i look at it the two a pretty even based on strengths and weaknesses BUT given that there a crap load of p platers with Lancer R/evolutions, and you could be easily confuse a dumb person into thinking that you just had one of the standard lancers with too much kit. Based on the high occurence of such idiots i i would go for the GTR.

PLUS it is a GTR

Riaz

R34 GTR is my dream - but there still 80000+++

Im looking at a budget of 55000 - 60000 max

Wannabe

i dont give a crap about what p platers drive - im buying the car for me - line me up in your gtst and you'll quickly realise that its no ordinary lancer.... youll be seeing tail lights.. ;->

Daniel

Daniel

id get the tommy makinen and skip right past the 33 gtr to the 34 gtr in the future...well thats my plan anyways :)

evo6 gsr complied can be had for low 30's these days. id love a tommy makinen, but they are still selling in japan at around 2.2 to 2.5million yen...i've seen gsr's at around 1.65mill yen.

Dan,

A mate of mine recently bought a black Evo 6.5 Tommi Mac. Its completely stock.

Very nice car but personally id go the GTR.

The Evo 6.5 interior didnt impress me. The seats are nice but the dash and console is pathetic. Straight out of a Lancer GLi.

Stock vs stock the GTR would kill the Evo. Stock evo really did not impress me at all power wise, was getting killed by fairly stockish silvia's. However im sure this would all change as soon as it starts getting modded. Still love the car, it handles great (better than the GTR im sure) and looks nice, but personally id go the GTR.

My 2 cents.

Id go the GTR just because i love skylines, but i rekon go the evo. Very rare on the street and like u said if someone thinks its a lancer just dressed up then you can shock a few ppl. Plus cops might not hassle you as much due to the rare factor.

i wudnt go for a aus deliverd evo 6.5, altho on paper theres not much difference, but i can tell you there is, mates jdm stock evo pulled 12.8 while a aus deliverd only managed 13.4 (around there), well both with aftermarket clutches coz stock they suck. even in modified form the jdm evo still had the edge over a aus deliverd 1. this is sketchy coz ithink the aus spec evo 6.5 didnt have front lsd, or it was different from the jdm one.

but i'd go an evo over a r33 gtr coz i've been in very well modded 1 and over and over again, and i'm still impressed with its performance, and its ability to smoke everything off the line :P, my mate just got a tomei engine in perth for he's evo so that shud be excitin!

and so what if P platers drive around in bodykited lancers, you got the sleeper appeal.

cheers

i driven a couple of 6.5s a few times

i can vouch for them being a terrific handler - the brakes are quite impressive

never even sat in a r33 gt-r so i have a biased opinion

like others have said - they are basic inside, cheap clarion deck found on any lancer etc

but the seats make up for some of that - they are quite good

intercooler spray is a nice gimmick too - and they look tough - even in white with no stickers - they still look tough - dunno how ppl confuse them for normal lancers

NO_RSPECT is referring to Mal Crockenburg in john st welshpool

he knows his stuff and is the authorised ralliart dealer - altho i think skippers service centre can get ralliart stuff too

can buy ecu's and intake kits from them etc

$55k-$60k? The soon-to-be released EVO VIII, or a R33 GT-R is more like it. I'd say the R33 GT-R, but this is a Skyline forum.

Seriously though, test drive both cars first, if you can (I'm sure someone here might give you a quick drive; and Mitsubishi has the EVO VIII) and formulate an opinion based on that. Then you'll never wonder what it would be like if you had bought the other car.

Dan,

Ive known you for a couple of years now and if i remmber rightly you have always wanted a GTR, the reason why you got the rex is coz you couldn't get the GTR at the time...... Go the GTR dude. At evolution R in bentley Jason and I saw a MAD EVO 3, now that thing was worked, but well i would still prefer a GTR over it.... just the steroidy look of the pumped up GTR looks sweeet!

For handling - Evo

For speed & looks - GTR BABY!!

Dan my main question to you now is..... WHERE ARE YOU EARNING ALL THIS MONEY?? I WANT IN!!! AHAHAHAH!!!

you can get some nice GTR Vspecs now for $50 G!

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
