What Decent Tyres To Get?

Hi, I know there's a 50 page stickied tyres thread, but unfortunately I didn't have 10 hours free time to trawl.

I am looking for a decent set of tyres for an R34 GTR on stock rims. Wanted something of a harder compound so I don't need to change them every year - willing to give up some grip for this. Good in wet as well. Used for spirited street driving - no drifting/track. Can anyone recommend something like this for under 2k all round?

I am based in Melbourne. What's a good place to get them?

You are just about asking the impossible, a Hard compound tyre, that has good grip in the wet and will handle 300rwkws in the wet for under $2k?

If you are changing tyres every 12 months I would be looking at your wheel alignment.

Toyo T1Rs have a stupidly soft compound, 595SS' are a pretty horrid tyre (they are cheap for a reason)

I would have a look at some continetials or the higher end comfort Bridgestones

What if you get 10 replies with 10 different recommendations?

Have you read tirerack.com feedback/tire reviews yet? Or shall I just add an extra opinion to the "10" and say that Potenza RE55 may now replace RE001? :P

Good place? Does your grand-dad/mum have a Seniors Card? If so, be nice to him/her and look up the Seniors booklet and check out where the 10%-off places are!

yes 595ss are pretty horrid but they will last him forever and are cheap...

i ran them with 300rwkw and for the price they do pretty well... however i would only ever buy them for a daily or drift .

so what kinda treadwear are you happy with? and what size?

Advan AD08's should come in your price range, but wont last that long... same with Nitto NT05.

Bridgestone RE001's will probably suit your appication pretty well.

Falken FK452's are the best street tyres IMO. They're simply AWESOME in the wet.

I can supply them in 245/40R18 for $255 each. I can get Federal 595's cheaper but they're not that great on an ultra high performance car like a GTR. You really want the best when you have a GTR to make the most of it.

Sorry if I came across as picky.

Had a look through the Tire Rack site and Tire Reviews.co.uk, and they are both great sites.

Think I want these:

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's

Tyre Comparison Chart

They kill everything else on Tire Rack for dry weather handling/ traction/ stability. I currently run Michelin Pilot Precedas (which I am very happy with), and these are a step up.

And trawling the net ppl have gone up to 40,000 kms on them before wearing out. I know tread wear is dependent on many variables, but I would be happy to get 15k out of them with 95% daily driving and 5% spirited street driving (I only do about 7k per year).

Price-wise, with the strong aussie dollar, ordering off Tire Rack plus shipping to Oz will set me back approx $1450 total, plus fitting, so I am very happy with that.

PS2 are good. You could probably get them locally for around $1500

For price /performance Sumitomo ZIII, literally half the price (on tirerack) of the PS2 for 95% of the performance. I use these, they are great with gradual loss of traction. You'll get at least 20,000km, I get ~40,000km. Locally I paid $1000 for a set of 4 fitted at Jaks(235/40/18).

The Conti "Extreme Contact DW" looks good from tirerack reviews for the price compared to PS2 also. If you are importing and only want ~20,000km you might as well get the Dunlop Direzza D1 star spec.

+1 For 452's, very grippy and made in Japan.

If you look round you should also be able to find some Toyo Proxes T1Rs on clearence ATM ;)

yes 595ss are pretty horrid but they will last him forever and are cheap...

When you say that a particular tyre is "Horrid" you might want to specify that this is only your opinion because the Federal 595 is actually very popular and a lot of Skyline (and other high performance vehicle) owners swear by them.

Yes they are at the inexpensive end of the tyre scale but they certainly arent a cheap, crap tyre sold only on price... For a really good "bang for your buck tyre" you almost cant go wrong with the 595 - in my opinion.

i just got kuhmo ku31s allround for my gtr, currently on 330kws and they hold the power very well in wet and dry

unlike the federals ss i had on previously, and best of all i got them through tempe tyres in sydney for 800 delivered to

my front door (melb)

thats for 265x35x18

      Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.

      Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.

      Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo

      Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
