I've wondered that myself - was hoping to update the post but you guys already got there, the fin was bent and the owner tried to straighten it, but broke it off.

ROFLCOPTER !?!?!?! That is all.

I have never seen a turbo have that kind of damage from hitting a compressor housing, they normally just wear down the wheels... Have seen a lot of turbos like that which have eaten bolts/stones etc. so my question is what did it eat?

This.

That looks more like something got through the filter, like a loose bolt or something! I would be pulling the entire intake assembly out to look for it imo.

I had a turbo where the housing and compressor made love, it still boosted but it sounded like a jet engine, probably the loudest whining noise I've ever heard, and yeah it just ground the edges down every so slightly, didn't snap anything off.

This again, I've also had compressor meet housing and got the big jet engine whine!

Bent from something hitting it lol. Myth busted!

I can only go from what I am told but the owner said on inspection shaft play was enough for the compressor to touch the housing

Pretty sure that would happen if something hit it with some RPM.

Naw he said the owner snapped it trying to bend the fin back.

Either way a compressor and the housing it sits in are round, I dont see it bending the one blade by hitting the housing. Impossible.

I also dont see it being replaced under warranty either.. Might want to be careful with an evo in future lol... Considering it was also a 25G compressor I would also assume the motor wasnt factory either.. Might want to be very $$ careful in future.

Maybe the missing piece of fin was enough imbalance to wear the bearing out and give it shaft play?

Almost certainly, but something hitting it, bending fin would be enough to put the bearing out anyway and cause it to eat the housing.

I think as a precaution he should pull intercooler and associated piping out, maybe an hour or twos work at most.

Is he going to replace it with another one? Like someone said, I doubt they would do warranty but they do sell the comressor wheels I believe...

What rear housing was it as well?

It was the SL2 25G item they make for the evo.

Evo 10.5cm twin scroll housing.

  • 1 month later...

so is one of these a viable upgrade instead of highflowing the stock turbo?

which one would i be looking at to safely see the limits of the stock injectors and afm on an rb25 neo?

how "bolt on" are they (need a new dump pipe probably?)

if your sticking with stock injectors and afm probably best off with a highflow as the good kandos are external gate..That said, Im currently swapping out my hiflow for a kando,,you want it..lol..will easy make 220kw on 14psi which is about the limit of stock injectors/afm..speak to Tangles he has much the same turbo on his wagon and loves it

These days it seems increasingly hard to beat a hypergear turbo. These SS turbos are nuts.

The kando's are actually better for more specific applications, like the T67 for big power like what Simon has shown. The 20g is yet to make its mark with anyone, we are still waiting on results from a couple of members (previously including me). Jap dynos have shown 12cm 20g's to crank close to 300kw and stand up stronger than a 3071.. Now we are working with 10cm housings which really have no restriction in seeing 300kw, so the results should be interesting. Certain well regarded tuners have also shown interest in results from the combo, it should be good.

Downside is you need a gate, whereas with HG its all bolt on. I think there will always be tradeoffs between the two, and Stao is limited by the internal gate.. Yet if working on a budget they are both viable, however if stealth fitment is a desired option, the tradeoff (expected to be small) to a HG would be worth it.

only reason I went for a Kando was to do something a little different, seems like everyone has a HG turbo these days..

Im not expecting 300kws though, 250-260 maybe close 300 if I e85 it.. Hareys latest HG result looks good though

have anyone here tried this?

would the 12cm be too laggy on a RB25 NEO?

looking for a unit that can be low mounted as i want to avoid the high mount path.

also cant tell the difference between the two apart from the $200 price difference?

target goal is anywhere from 290-300 (more is a bonus) i believe the t67 that simon has would be too laggy for me, so the TD06 would be ideal.

RB25DET NEO

built bottom end

has all supporting mods already.

PULP only, no E85 here

currently running a twin turbo setup but looking for more power and just weighing up costs for upgrading twins VS single big low mount. (So far the low mount ends up cheaper but it is for the turbo to be high mounted which im trying to avoid)

ideally i would like this one but not sure if it'll fit in low mount position?

    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
    • Is this a brand new LSD? if so, have you followed any break/bed in procedure for it? Usually involves heaps of figure 8 patterns, a fluid flush.
    • It's TWO steering wheels actually. 😛 one for each hand They are wheels, and they steer!
