SimonR32 proposed a TD06SL-20G v band internal gate T3 flange turbo kit for $785 on ebay but i heard from some members the 8cm housing is too small

you could always ask Stao to make you up a IG rear housing to suit tdo6 ..should perform alright.. im sure he would of tried something similar before..

Hey hey im getting attacked by the kando virus today and now seriously considering a kando low mount(stock manifold) 280-300rwkw STREET turbo for my neo over the Hypergear, needs to be internal gate too so no stuffing around welding an external gate, basically looking for a 3076R/ SS1PU equivalent..if anyone can point me to the correct specced kando unit and dyno graph (so many numbers n specs), i will buy him a packet of chips..:winks

Sorry to break your heart but this is and always will be external gate land. The internal gate housings on offer are not what I would call optimal, you will need an external gate setup if you want to reap the benefits. ARTZ setup is the bare minimum for running one of these turbos.

Even for the questionable kando internal gate turbos you will need a custom dump which will cost atleast $500, your JJR bellmouth will be obsolete.

Hypergear has you sorted, off you go. SS1PU is for you.

Well I just ordered a 3" td06sl2-20g 10cm. (is there a 4" and is anti surge make any difference?)

Not expecting it to arrive after Xmas tho lol.

I'd think either 40mm or 44mm should be fine..compgate 40mm has a really small body, good if your trying to hide it..i was going to get it but I want to try running just on springs no EBC and see how it goes...finding springs for the Compgate was troublesome..so i got a tial 44mm with springs..if its not happy I may just get a gizzmo ebc or something..

If it's mounted on the rear housing, there is no hiding it.

Agree with finding springs though, it took me awhile to find the genuine Turbosmart spring I was looking for.

Yes, you can get them from a Turbosmart dealer. My local Turbosmart dealer wanted $110 for one spring. I ended up finding one for $40. It just took me awhile.

This recent backlash of melting AC grommets is rubbish, just make a heat shield of some sort and it will be fine. Or that alloy based race tape stuff.

To fully fledged do it right with a kando will cost more than a hypergear and will look no where near stock.

I'm not familiar with external gate setups and V-band turbos, just doing a fair bit of research on them, the kando my be cheap at 700-800 bux, but then the 44mm tial wastegates (whats a good cheap wastegate option?) r damn expensive and then you have to weld up the freakin thing to the turbo rear housing (is a screamer required or just optional?) And I do not understand why the rear of the external gate V-band turbos have a circular outlet where it bolts to the bell-mouth dump..Hence I will need a V-band adaptor or something to mate it to my JJR dump/front, correct???? Do I have to have a pipe from the external gate to the dump as well?? Sorry for these questions, I have only been concentrating on internal gate setups.

All this work looks like it will add up to around the cost of a Hypergear kit or more...so I'm un-decided... But then you get much better performance from external gate setups hey..pinch.gif

Look I dont mean to be 'mean' but you are comming across very naive.

The V band rear end does not bolt onto anything... its a clamp in flange. It comes with a clamp and a V band ring for you to weld onto. You make a dump pipe and weld it to the V band ring then clamp it on to the back of the turbo. Does this make sense?

I said it prior and will say it again, your JJR dump is obsolete if you want to get an external gate, sell it. There will be no adapter you can feasibly make to adapt the JJR dump to a 3" V band. Just make a V band dump. And yes you can plumb the external gate back into the exhaust flow.

External gate setups can hold more power and get better boost control. For example you could run a tighter rear housing and be able to get better spool and power than the same turbo internally gated.

A good example of this is running a 3076 internal gate, you need a .82 rear end and people like Simon S14 have been successful running a .63 rear end with an external gate. Yet everybody knows the .63 internal gate had flow restriction and boost control issues. Simon S14 was able to exceed the power of the average .82 IW 3076 and get better response. The costs do have benefits but it is a BIG cost.

External gate does not sound like it is for you. I recommend you get your stock turbo highflowed using the stock housings. Unbolt it, send it away, get it back and bolt it back on. There is a lot of work in doing an external gate setup and you will need to know what your on about so you can arrange the works to facilitate the change.

If you can trim down your desire for power to a 250ish kw tune then you wont need an external gate.

Same place to be fair, they are simply expensive. Not the most expensive I have seen though. That's simply how much they charge, I didn't go in there and say "I will give you x $$ for x product".

Scott, many thanks for the useful info, and no, 250rwkw is not my goal, I want a snappy 280-300rwkw and that is why I have narrowed down the turbo to the SS1PU, and now reading all this Kando stuff has brought it a new competitor albeit in different ways to it being an external gate setup.. As I'm fairly new to external gated setups and learning heaps currently, I am tossing between the two and there seem to be quite a few on here who are saying good things about the Kando's fast spool and snapppy response.. If I can get the TD06SL-20G kit in 10cm housing for say, $700-750, a Tial 40mm gate for 320ish (or a cheaper just-as-good gate, options??) and $100-200 to weld the gate onto my dump, modify dump by cutting off bellmouth flange and welding V-band ring on (possible? issues?), then it sort of adds up to the cost of a HG SS1PU with actuator which is 1400ish....that is assuming I can get the fabrication done cheap, I know its a bit of work but not much..

Just one thing, are most of yous welding the external gates to the turbo rear housing or onto the dump itself??

    • I know why it happened and I’m embarrassed to say but I was testing the polarity of one of the led bulb to see which side was positive with a 12v battery and that’s when it decided to fry hoping I didn’t damage anything else
    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.

    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
