I still don't get the fact they can check by radio or computer, but you still have to have the sticker?

Having a sticker is just a good indicator to Police. It's something I can visually see that's all. At night conducting RBT it's too time consuming to do a rego check on every single car so I'll just look at the sticker. Whilst someone may slip through with a new sticker and having not paid it.... well, life dealt them a good hand that night. But all gamblers come unstuck at some point. You get people all the time with an expired label who say "Oh but I paid it! I just didn't put the sticker on yet" This is very common, and whilst an offence (around ~$80 from memory); Police will do a check either via computer or radio and confirm whether it's registered. If it's registered, I'll let them go on their way and advise them to just put the new sticker on ASAP.

Just so you know if you change one thing after you get your engineering report and it on the report the report get thrown out the window and the cop can defect you for everthing that is engineer report and then big fines I got done in a mates car and the tyre size was out I was run 17" when they where ment to be 16" and then got pinged for everthing

LOL hes back! lurking all this time or just popped in and noticed the defect thread?

somehow i have been rolling around the city with a heavily modified skyline for about 4 years now, not had one cop ask to look under the bonnet or even raise an eyebrow at the loud 'zorst. I have assumed this is due to me being in the CBD, bondi junction, paddo area and the cops in this part of town not giving too much of a flying f** about that kind of thing.

I keep hearing about people getting defected and they always seem to be out in the burbs, does this sound about right?

throwing a very defectable CF bonnet on this week so i guess i will be putting this theory on the line somewhat..

Hehe...

Will you admit it if you're defected? How can I ask such a stupid Q of Pat? Of course he will! :P

Poser Q:- Can a car be defected if it's on private property? :whistling:

Poser Q:- Can a car be defected on federal property such as a university campus? :whistling:

yup picking up car tomorrow and hope to find someone to help me fit new bonnet over the wknd, old mate who sold it to me did so due to it being defected in Qld...lets hope they are friendlier down here..will keep my eyes peeled for you RB25PWR...

You can still be defected even with an engineers certificate.

If this is the case, how does one legally mod a car? If you can get done for an EGNINEERED FMIC, how can you have one without any risk of being defected? I can understand suspension and exhaust mods where the engineer has been a bit forgiving and said "you're right, mate" but with something of no real consequence, why are coppers defecting things like this?

The laws are ridiculous these days, the police should be focusing on dangerous driving and dangerous cars, rather than cars that are in better condition than stock. Or focus on real crime.... Not having a dig at you, mate. You seem like a fine officer, and I've dealt with a few good cops, but my last run in with them has really left a sour taste in my mouth. FWIW, my old man is an ex Det. Sgt.

How does one legally mod a car? I guess the simple answer is you can't. However with that said, I've come across cars with high mounts and they went to the trouble of getting it engineered. To me if it's engineered that's good enough for me. Why are Police defecting people for this? I know this stuff seems minor to the general public, and you're right, it is... and is treated as such in my opinion. But if someone old does a backyard job on their car it can be a hazard to themselves and other road users. Which is why it must be engineered... Defects are probably on the bottom of the priority list, the things you mentioned are a priority and are treated as such with operations being conducted.

I can't speak for every Police officer but I dare say if someone has gone to the trouble of getting their vehicle engineered, the likely hood of them receiving a defect is very unlikely.

+1. I reckon if your cars been engineered you'd only get defected if you fail the dickhead test.

Police are not automotive engineers or qualified mechanics and should only look at basic things like tyres. The whole random RWC by police is absurd. You can buy a brand new Harley which is extremely loud or a Porsche or Ferrari with massive wheels, tyres and exhaust and is so low it can't make it over a speed bump. Rich people can drive high performance cars but stick a performance muffler on your Nissan and some cop goes bananas.

If all these after-market parts are illegal then why are they sold? These parts are designed and tested by automotive engineers and are perfectly safe. I can understand if a car is extremely loud or has bald tyres but the rest is 100% BS.

Modding a car is all illegal is it? That ridiculous statement would make the entire performance parts industry illegal which it is not. I'd like to see the cops do a RWC on a brand new Ferrari and defect everything like they do on some other cars just to illustrate how pointless and absurd they are.

HotRodderJoe - Alot of parts clearly state race use only. Thats how they get away with selling them. Its up to the user to choose whether or not to take the risk of using on the road.

Im sure the police have seen there fair share of dodgy modded cars, so they have to treat all as a possibility.

Same as guns though theyre more dangerous when in the wrong hands

That's a valid point but the vast majority of after-market performance parts are not labelled as strictly not for street use race only. If cops want to go round wasting their time looking at air filters, intercoolers and exhaust systems that's their business but I'd prefer if they did actual policing like investigating actual crime rather than pointlessly harassing someone who's done nothing wrong. A motorcycle or scooter is street legal. There's no way an air filter or intercooler or exhaust system could be deemed more dangerous than riding a motorcycle thus judged to be illegal by police. There's no automotive engineering safety justification for some of the defects issued.

We all know some of the defect notices are ridiculous and have nothing to do with road safety. Revenue raising? Defecting a front strut brace? If anything this improves the safety of the vehicle. Absolute rubbish. That's my 2c.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
