Hello.

I found out that the RB25DET engine from the R33 would handle just fine up to 500HP with stock internals.

I have ordered a Garett E50 turbokit (including ex wastegate and aftermarket manifold) which I will install in few weeks. I'm aiming to reach 450-500HP (less for rwhp)

Would this be possible with the stock nissan ECU without risk to damage the engine? Or do I need to upgrade the ecu and get it remapped ?

Car spec:

Rebuild engine not long ago

Stock head gasket

CP Forged pistons (stock bore size)

3" exhaust + decat

Induction kit + blow off

Aftermarket intercooler, and oil cooler

GTR fuel pump

Probably got aftermarket clutch

Bee R rev limiter

nah don't bother with a tune... i'm sure it will sort itself out fine.... most people here spend a couple grand on their motor and never bother with a tune....

here is some actual info that I hope is useful and you are not trolling...

1. a RB25DET cannot handle 500hp on stock internals, perhaps you are thinking of the RB26DETT where the rods can handle over 400kw....

2. You always need a tune when upgrading engine components.

3. You will need decent injectors to go with the stuff above and a new air flow meter that can cope with the extra air being sucked in.....

4. Bee R will eventually f*ck your motor....

just replace the ecu with home old VCR you used to probably have. proven over 700BHP with some simple rewiring.

+1 you must get a tune and the rest of the necessary gear to do job.

ECU, AFM, injectors, fuel pump, etc.

See a tuner about what you will need.

I'm sorry that the question is a bit lame, but its hard to get professional answer regarding my question.

I'm not a troll, and about the bee R, I have seen different opinions about it, and I will only use it with low setting (short ignition cut) for not risk damaging anything.

Back to the topic, would you guys recommend to use the Nistune tuning suite, and let the local dealer tune it ?

Yes. Nistune would be the best option, but not so much with an R33. You need to use it with either a Z32 300zx ECU or R32 GTS-T ECU w/ separate VCT switch to keep variable inlet cam timing.

Ok... So what would you recommend instead of the Nistune?

I know that the apexi power FC is a good choice already, but isn't it a other alternative that is good for less price ?

I found a TOMEI stage1 ecu for a good price, but not sure if it can be retuned for my setup..

Power FC is possibly the easiest and most widely supported, but Apexi discontinued production of it for the R33 GTS-T...so you either pay something stupid for it or buy it second hand.

Personally I'm running a ViPEC v44 plug and play ECU. It's worth roughly $1800 though...there are other options, but Nistune would probably be the cheapest.

You NEED a tunable ECU, not a Tomei one.

I don't think there's a cheaper option than the PowerFC or a NIStune with a second hand Z32 ECU...

For both you will also need a Z32 AFM, and larger injectors.

+1 sick of people chasing high horsepower on the cheap. You ALWAYS end up paying for it in the end anyway, why make yourself look cheap in the first place ;)

That said, I have a 386 motherboard you can use, may or may not be compatible with the Nistune.

Buying cheap parts that is not good for this car is not a option for me, will regret it anyways later. (have done it and will never do it again)

Last question, how much HP could I achieve with this garrett turbo with stock ecu, and stock injectors, without risk to damage the engine? Probably around 400hp max ?

mate you are not reading any of the previous posts are you

any modification you should get a tune. i have stock turbo stock injectors. i have wound the boost up to 12psi did i leave it no i got a ecu and tuned it. mate if its the wallet stopping you start off with ecu then go bigger turbo and injectors. do the build slowly. did i i build my car in 1 month no neither did most of us. took majority of us years and lots of saving to get where we are. heck took me 2 years almost just to afford to do a engine conversion. take your time start off with minor mods the get bigger.

The standard injectors and standard air flow meter run out around 220-230rwkw (~300rwhp).

DO NOT fit a different turbo if you dont intend on getting the ecu remapped.

It's old technology and plus it won't give you a lot of the features that a complete aftermarket ECU will. But if you want cheap, then this is the cheapest you're ever likely gonna get!

I see, here I live I only know about two workshops that tune ECU's, I know they do the powerFC but I doubt they do these you meantion, but I have to ask ... thanks for the tip.

OP, what country are you from?

Norway... snow is soon gone, and drift season is soon starting, so would be fun to get more power, even though 300hp is enough.

    • Hi, i’m making a rb25det coil loom for Vag short coil. Can anybody tell me which Ecu signal wire belong to coil number 1 and 2,3,4,5,6? The connecting switch in above pic is 8 wire i think white is for +12v and black for earth.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
