Hi everyone

I was hoping to see if anyone could help me out on the forum,i have a 2000 model R34 GTR and am in the market for an electronic boost controller.

Just wondering what would be the best one.......in the near future i'm hoping to be putting out around the 400awkw mark i have been checking out the HKS evc boost controller but don't know if it works well with the GTR's? any help or personal experience would be great thanks.

Good old bleed hole works a treat on GTR's.

I had a $600 odd AVC-R that just didn't work - workshop ripped it out and replaced with a piece of alloy pipe with a hole drilled in it off the wastegate lines. Bigger the hole higher the boost.

Holds 17psi perfectly (GT-SS ~14psi actuators)

I do hear the newer dual solenoids are much better as Ash mentioned, but no point if it can be done for a couple of bucks. Is also tucked away out of sight, no screens and wiring harnesses to install etc.

as ash said you only need a good controller if you want to run MORE boost

if you get the right sized actuator spring or external gate spring at the desired level then that's all you need

no need for a $500 controller. its only if you want to bleed MORE boost over the minimum target level that you need a controller

the higher priced controllers usually offer scramble, dual solenoid, fancy displays etc

if you insist on a controller dont get a 14psi spring and try to run 27psi

its too much work for the controller and it will struggle, try and size the spring according to your minimum target level

ie if you want to run 19psi all the time, then get a 16psi spring and bleed 3psi

The main reason i want to install the boost controller is because i want to be able to control a high and low setting hence dual stage.

I had a Greddy pro-fec b 2 in my tt supra and i liked the fact i could drive around on 10psi all day then when i felt like giving it a boot full i can switch it over so it has a max of 16psi thats all.....Wanted to get something similar but was not sure if their was one that worked really well with the RB26

Speaking from experience alone, went from a pos his evc5 in my evo to a profec b spec 2 and was far happier.

Also went from blitz SBC to turbotech in a 32gtr with factory position twins and was also MUCH happier.

The turbotech has never disapointed nor failed. The profec is also quite a nifty toy with a couple of valuable features for a lightly modded car.

Be it myself I would do the right foot boost control with actuators set as close to target as possible and a turbotech for added confidence on spool and gate creep.

best value is profec B II. they work fine on GTRs and are cheap and easy to use.

best outright is either HKS EVC 5 or the BLITZ dual SBC ID3. both very good but more costly.

as the guys said if you want say low boost of 18psi, get 15psi actuators and bleed 3psi, then for your high boost you'll have to bleed a bit more. I can understand wanting 2 boost levels, nothing wrong with that. and the best way to get that is with an EBC. either of the 3 above should give good results. I've used all 3 (and others) personally in my cars.

I have a profec b spec II in my car at the moment, it works great (was cheap second hand) and has 2 boost levels but I feel that the Blitz dual solenoid ones work better at holding boost dead flat, plus the Blitz ID3 has 4 settings.

I have also used Turbotech bleed valves on various cars and once they are set up (they can be a bit fiddly and sensitive) you seriously can't beat them for price. Only issue is they only have one boost setting.

They only do if the gate is creeping/opening early.

I used to experience it with my external as an example

7psi spring - 17psi bleed. Gate would "creep" open before 17psi.

15psi spring - 2psi bleed. Gate would remain shut until 17psi

:)

Sometimes internal gate setups suffer this also as the gate is much smaller (eg ext 45mm, int 25mm).

But it varies and is influenced by quite a few things including dump pipe, exhaust restriction, lengths of vac hose/where you are referencing boost etc.

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol. 
    • Hi, Got the membership renewal email but haven't acted yet.  I need to change my address first. So if somebody can email me so I can change it that would be good.    
    • Bit of a similar question, apprently with epoxy primer you can just sand the panel to 240 grit then apply it and put body filler on top. So does that basically mean you almost never have to go to bare metal for simple dents?
