Hey guys im still pretty new to all of the high performance stuff and I really dont have thousands of dollars to blow

on a shiny looking engine bay but im obsessed with turbo cars and to me if it aint turbo its just not a performace car.

Because I dont have a shit load of money to blow my build will be done as cheaply as possible, yet still having the correct gear in the car

to make her fly on the track.

I started with a goal in mind of doing 1:10 at mallala in SA, as i was told by a few people it wasnt possible unless i had like 50k to spend on a car

BS i told em ive had a 1:28 in a interga with a type R engine and mild suspention and brake work, so i only need to wipe off 18 seconds

and i believe it can be done with a budget of 10k. They also said the hardest car to do it in would be an aus del R31.....so thats exactly what i went out and bought lol

and so the journey begins, i needed a 31 with some work already done so i could spend more on the handling side than the engine side,

I looked for a WHOLE SOLID HOUR lol, before i saw this bucket for sale

Don't Carrera Cup GT3 Porsches only run 1:12s?

Be interesting to see what you have planned and how far you can get....

Yep roy they do:

http://mallala.com/information-2/lap-records/

I dont know how up to date they are with their website though.

Please dont take this as criticism, more of an observation. You should possibly think about a different form of

motor sport (all out time attack might not be for this project) or a different platform in which to start.

I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

WOW! ok im abit confused as to y some of those times are over 1:30? ive done 1:30 in my brothers corolla with an NA 20valve in it, ill chase him up for the video!

ive also had 1:28 in an integra gsi with a NA Type R motor

so my thinking was i could shave off those extra seconds with a high horespowered turbo car? or maybe this is gonna be harder than i thought lol

well i will be going nuts with handling too so i hope i really can get there

few more photos of it im tossing up the idea of transplanting the engine into a S14 but i feel more determined to do this with the 31 now.

ok so to strart with I found a 31 with a load of goodies already in

they consist of

Rebuilt by Phil Collier himself, at Collier engines in Adelaide

Forged pistons, standard size (forgot brand ROSS i think?)

ACL race series bearings

450cc injectors

nisstune computer

adjustable fuel reg

front mount cooler

multi layered steel head gasket

decked block

full balance

bored out throttle body

turbo cam

3 inch mandrel bend turbo back exhaust with high flow cat, custom dump all 3 inch

lightened fly wheel

external waste gate

garret to4e top mount turbo

ported head, 3 angle valve job

clutch was slipping cause it wasnt the right pressure plate, and it needs a Z32 to run properly so a real project it is lol

So the first thing I did to anticipate abit longer lasting driveline was get a clutch made by Keith from KB Clutch Engineering, its a 5 puk ceramic clutch capable of taking 350KW ATW

Here it is!!!!

And here it is on the 31 now

IMG_0048478x640.jpg

IMG_0049478x640.jpg

saving up to get a 25 gearbox so i chucked a RB20 box just to get her moving around

IMG_0050478x640.jpg

ok so over the weekend i started to check for rust and striping the interior out

IMG_0056640x478.jpgIMG_0056640x478.jpg

IMG_0054640x478.jpgIMG_0053640x478.jpg

IMG_0052640x478.jpgIMG_0051640x478.jpg

was a crap job to do but it needs to be done! and best of all NO RUST!!!! WTH a car older than me with no rust? i was so dam happy lol

Ive found an s13 5 stud front susp conversion i want put in the 31 but she has developed some kind of oil problem today so i might put that on hold for now and look into a better oil pump, crank collar ect ect before i start on the handling side of things

will update on the weekend

lol, goodluck with that. Ill assume you dont drive Mallala too often then

you of little faith, even if i dont get 1:10 it will be close, and ill personally put the egg on your face if i manage it lol :domokun:

im cash poor because i have a kid on the way so the complete build will take at least 1 year, but when its done i promise she will not dissapoint

the plans I have for the handling side are going to be the most important and im currently looking into IRS rear end with the help of a good mate building his own monster

IRS will require cutting and fab work but i think the results will be well worth the effort

if you want IRS etc why not just start with a 32 or 33 GTST shell? if it's only a track car you could get a pretty decent 32 GTST or 33 GTST non-registerable shell for not much coin.

Very true and i have found a track only 32 shell, but the reason i chose the 31 is because people say it cant be done, well i say with the right mix of power and handling it can!

every car has the potential just have to find what works for each car.

kitto 1:21.89 (30ET Aus 4 door)

I believe Kittos time was done with a 200kw RB20DET with semi slicks at skyline nationals. But i could be wrong.

Good luck i will be watching this thread. Deffs need abit of chassie strength so maybe a rollcage and extra bracing.

aaaah good point i havnt even thought about the chassi :thanks:

thats an awesome time, honestly with my budget if i come close to a time like that ill be really happy.

anyone know where to find a cage for a 31 lol?

Ive been looking into a custom built one, ive never seen the design before but it looks promising

it seems to go from the top left of the suspention tower on the front... into the cabin, then crosses over to the rear right side of the car and vise versa for the other side

then it looks like it braces the rear quite well too, ill try n draw a picture of it and post it up lol, but im crap at drawing so dont shoot me when its up.

I'd be looking at a goal of 1'20 TBH. Like above, 500kw R32 GT-R running close enough to 1'13 and its only got a half cage and full interior so you've got a long journey ahead of you. But all the best.

P.s - Brad Trentworth just got the T.A Philcom Lap record last week with a 1'11 something in his RX-7. Just afew cars you'll be up against.

Nice ambition, but for $10k you will struggle to crack a 1:20. I am willing to bet serious coin that you never crack a 1:15 within your $10k budget, if at all. Hope this motivates you more, but you are dreaming :D

And by 'just shaving 18 seconds off your old lap' in the Honda is like the difference between doing a 13 second quarter mile and an 10 second quarter mile.

Greg Murphy holds the lap record for V8 supercar around lala at 1:08. Martin Donnon has shot a fairly out of the box evo X to 1:15 and STi to 1:16. Keir has sent his 35 GTR with a mansion-load of development around for a 1:11. Good luck!

PS: Mallala is mostly about handling and braking, what have you got planned in the brake region?

    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
    • Reading all this... hurts lol. I have an ENR34 5MT and I paid an inflated USA price for the car alone, had to do tons of preventative maintenance past that, and so I'm over $30K USD into the car already and haven't even touched power.  I wanted to +t it. Not even trying to make GTR numbers, I'd be happy with 250hp.  Can I get away with paying much less to make that happen?
    • Damn you’ve done well, definitely snapping necks.
    • Great weekend and event. Open fire at the caravan park, perfect weather all day and a great feed and a couple of drinks at at awesome country pub.
    • Waaay ahead of ya....(evil laugh!!) Will show the fitment and spec details later when it isnt as rainy !
