As they are the only guys that know anything???

Im out!

I cannot figure out whether you are having a shot or not!!! My qualification's on this car and some of the quickest historic race cars in this country far exceed 99% of the workshops in Australia!

FYI Most workshops will treat your car no different to a 1980's model 3.3lt XE falcon!...fact!!!...ours is very different.

It's up to you on what you want to do....the advice is here for you to take from people who have stuffed around with every aspect of this car.....we have all tried and proven method's and I would dare to say some of us are f#$king experts!

Just because a workshop has the gall to call forum's and the threads that have been written "wrong" it doesn't mean it is! It just mean's more than likely they know f#$k all themselves! But I bet I know where they go when what they are doing turns to shit!......then they have a figjam moment thinking that they sorted the problem themselves!

My new twin turbo diesel VW has service intervals of 15k...

Amarok? Dad just got one of those, they're 15k, but then so's their Audi. No idea if that's just a VW thing or a diesel thing.

My logic with these things has always been they're second hand cars, and I've always just changed the oil every 5k. This car might be different, as it is more modern than anything I've owned previously but I'm happy to do it anyway, and it's not going to hurt it. Small price to pay for my peace of mind. Then again since dad has a workshop, it's pretty easy for me to knock over quickly on a Saturday morning, and I don't have to deal with offloading oil, crawling on the floor, etc. Just chuck it on the hoist, drain it into the oil tank, nip it up and you're done!

And yes, I am more than a little paranoid. But I'm ok with it!

Hey, if you have the time to do 5,000km services with cheap oil/fluids, good for you.

I prefer to use high quality oils filters and fluids and do it myself every 10,000kms.

so ur saying even if u did 10,000km in 2 years u would still only change it at 10,000km???

oil degrades and yes mainly by over temperature but still u dont know how long its been sitting on the shelf etc etc

i dont use the car every day, im lucky to do 5000km in 6 months.

so either i do 2 oil changes with a $60 bottle of oil a year

or i do 1 oil change with a $120 bottle of oil.................

whats the difference apart from piece of mind that i know my oil is fresh....................................................

Not having a go at you. More so at iamhe77 for pretty much discounting everyone else's opinion." If wondering about service intervals, see Iain and Craig's responses"

I thought these tech forums is somewhere we can share our thoughts, knowledge and experiences, be them good or bad.

not a prob bud!...didn't think you were.......I probably didn't need to blow my own trumpet in my response either but I was more or less just trying to let you know that I/we do know our shit and our experiences with most workshops on our cars have been less than impressive!.....piss's me off when I see others get ripped off because some workshop decides to try and cut open the golden goose!

e.g. people getting charged $2,000 to $2,500 just for a turbo change....no parts just labor!dry.gif

i dont think thats discounting other peoples opinions. he's merely stating information which he follows.

i disagree with the viking all the time, but no need to have a go over it man. if you feel safer doing your services every 5000km go for it, I do it every 5000km just because i can. but i give my motor a pretty good kick every now and then at nearing 300kw.

Hes just saying if your wondering about the intervals and times, iain's and craigs response is pretty close to whats advised from factory, and what most of the people are doing on here. Im sure hes not saying "nah f**k you your wrong, if you do it 5000k your retarded"

Thanks guy's. I just felt as though people did think you are some sort of mong for changing at 5k. I do it because I feel more comfortable and I do it with my 180SX pushing 270rwkw. I like to treat all my cars the same so the new M35 will also be changed at 5k intervals.

lol thats just stup...

nah im joking dude go for it!

Yep, what Aaron said.

Just answering the question from my own experience.

I got caught up in the "must service every 5,000kms" for the first 2 years of ownership and used synthetic oils.

Cost me a fortune as I was doing 800kms every week, so I decided to see how the car was with 7500km service intervals.

Was all good, so went to 10,000km intervals and again, ran beautifully.

lol, it is probably not necessary to change every 5,000kms... just as it is probably not necessary to use Group V oil (Motul 300v, Redline, NEO).

I like to use the best fluids/oils and service less frequently, Aaron likes to use damn good oil and change every 5,000, Craig does his every 10-12,000, other like to have Nissan service their cars.

It's your car, so do whatever you are most comfortable with.

No wonder! Doing an oil change/service every 1-2 months would drive me mental!

Mine only gets driven on weekends, so it only does around 10,000km/year. One service every 4-6 months isn't too bad.

yeah pretty close

oil 10k

filter same time

spark plugs 80-100k

coolant 2 years or 40k

fuel filter 2 years or 40k

air filter? chnge when it looks dirty lol or 2 years 40k

brake 2 years or 40k

drive belts 80-100k

some people change oil at 5k, but to me thats overkill with a decent oil. manufacturers are pushing cars to 12.5k and 15k service intervals

Yay im doing it right! Minus the oil interval, I do it anytime between 5K and 10K, when ever I feel like doing it but never goes over 10K.

Quick Q, where's the fuel filter in M35s?

In the tank.....it's part of the canister that holds the fuel pump......from memory its about $54AUS to replace.

    • Stock ECU (or more accurately stock tune) absolutely refuses to go over 10psi and behaves like you have seen. The Nistune is the same if it is the stock tune. If the Nistune chip has been tuned, the resulting tune could be literally anything for any combination of parts. The Nistune just makes the stock ECU Tunable.
    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way.
