Argh, I've got the same issue. I've pulled it out a few times and cleaned it out which seems to work well for a while, but eventually it comes back again.

The starater motor gear / flywheel ring gear on the bnr34 appears to be different to all other r32 - r34 skylines, I guess due to the dual mass flywheel, so you can't just pick up a spare easily and bolt it on either :(

Just got a quote from Ni$$an for a new unit; $1585 and a week or so wait from Japan.. I've got a feeling the bearing may be shot, I think I may pull it apart this weekend and try replacing it.

wow $1585 for a new starter motor, i just got mine done on Wed had it refurbished (re-grease + new brushes etc...) plus a 12 month warranty on the job/parts replaced only cost $209.00 (labour for removal/refit included). have you re-conditioned your one or did you just add grease to it? may be you could have a auto elect have a look at it next time you take it out.

but only time will tell with my one if the screeeeeech comes back or not.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
