Hi all , I stumbled across this at Evom net and dif a few searches to confirm . This is a link to ATP and shows a few compressor maps ie the GTX2863R , GTX2867R and a comparison of a GTX2863R and GT2860RS compressors . Note the caption for the GTX2876R is a typo and should read GTX2967R - you'll see if you expand it .

Elswhere there's mention of a GTX3576R and some of the much larger 55 series as well .

Its significant that some of these later GTX variants are 63 and 67mm OD because thats where some of the extra flow capacity comes from ie it isn't just because of the GTX blade count and profile .

It remains to be seen if the GT28 turbines can keep up though in a Utube vid of Garrett at Sema this year there's mention of twin scroll T3 flanged GT28 turbine housings on the way . Get down on your knees and pray they have twin integral wastegates like the GT30 Evo ones do because this would give these turbos a huge lift in performance affordably .

The GTX2860Rs, and maybe GTX2863Rs may be interesting in twin form on GTRs - I could see the GT2863R being quite an interesting thing on an RB20 if you can get them with a T3 flange turbine housing.

I don't see the point in the GTX3576R, personally - there has already been an overlay of a GT3082R and GTX3076R which ended up pretty much identical. The GTX 76mm compressor doesn't flow as nicely overall as the GT 82mm compressor, and seems to be overall no flasher in terms of bringing on boost so really it sounds like an expensive downgrade to a GT3582R. I'd be happy to see it prove to be an incorrect evaluation, but it sounds like the answer to a question no one asked.

The GTX2860R and the GTX55 are probably the most exciting prospects here I think - instead of having fun with all these new compressor wheels etc, I think they should look more into providing quality twin scroll turbine housings and make use of the fact that Borg Warner have made big promises which they've not delivered on... if they can fill those gaps they may keep themselves in the game.

The biggest shame in the EFR failure to date is the exhaust housings, as Lith said Garrett need to focus more on that.

Im getting tired of seeing comp maps climb exponentially for the sake of a few Lbs of flow.. Its like we are having new products come out and saying 'the power of a 3071 with the response of a 2871'...... In reality we will need to build motors to accept unacceptable boost levels to match a result that a trick exhaust housing could have done to an old hat product at an acceptable boost level.

Honestly.... Meh. As an end user not looking to build a motor any time soon these new products are bleeding boring. There is definitely a market for them but it is definitely not focused on the average owner/driver.

In Lith's example, interesting to see them on a GTR, all well seeing as there are housing constraints at play, yet we are definitely talking BIG power and a BIG budget motor. These products arent going to yield some magical 350kw result.. I see these changes are a bleeding of the colours from the old hat 400 and 500kw targets. We may turn -5s (and some) into -10s in terms of response and power, a bleed across from the two (read somewhat -5 response with -10 power). Still not something we all want to rush out and buy as -5s are already enough to pop a stock motor let alone at 3 bar of boost.

Le sigh. New product fail.

food for thought. on our race car. we went from gt 2860rs to gt2871 51mm (x2) and gained only 4kw. going from 3.0L to 3.5L it actually went backwards with more boost. wich to me says the thurbine wheel is already at a choke point..

May I draw everyones attention to the RB25 dyno thread.................... An interesting result in comparison to others of late. Once again seems to be an accumulation of parts rather than just the turbo...

So these turbos just have a higher flowing compressor wheel? I guess it has the word of the week in the sale pitch ("billet") so they will probably sell lots of these to people. It would need the surge slotted compressor housing considering a larger compressor wheel with the same turbine side would be more prone to surging...

Thanks for your email. the 2530 runs off GTRS turbine wheel which can flow up to around the 450hp mark.

I believe the reasons that you can’t hold more boost would either be the comp wheel can not satisfy engine’s air consumption at the specific boot level. The wastegate is too small. And Turbine housing is too small.

So you can run 71mm comp wheel or we can make a set of billet 60mm wheel and machine out your current internal gate with a larger flap see if that works better, if not we will have to go for larger turbine housing or larger turbine wheel which will affect the GTR’s response by much.

The 2530's already felt laggy on the Rb26det, The next size up is the GT30 turbine wheel, we can grind it down in trim which will pickup better response but I'm not too sure what that would be like running as a twin on a GTR thou..

You will really be looking at the GT3071 / 76 cores. those are around 1400AUD each from Garrett Australia, but I'm more then happy just machine your housings if you want to supply your own core as you can get them for almost half price from US.

We charge $110 for each housing to be machined. And Also if you've got the anti surged housings we will need to measure up the surge grove to the lower blade of the new comp wheel.

Just need someone with 2530/-5 to take the plunge and try a cropped GT30 exhaust wheel as above and use the HTA 68 front wheel and hope for the best! If its to laggie 3ltr it!!

I dont think it will be as bad as the 71 wheel because the "billet" wheel does its magic up top when the motor can consume it!

Mmm thats tempting, VERY tempting to try out.

Always wanted twin highmount power but never went through with it due to not looking stock. So, if they're direct fit to stock position that changes the game.

Did you ask for an estimate on twin 3076 rwkw by any chance?

Ok N1 id be willing to donate $100 towards some high flow twin setup development.. If we could find another 19 member we could put a large dent in the initial outlay? Would be nice to keep them in true direct bolt on loosing that would suck! We could name them after the forum something catchy like -5AU. LOL

Personally I'd like to see these new compressors fitted to cropped 56.5mm GT30 turbines rather than GT28 NS111 turbines. The cropped turbines can still be fitted into T2 housing but the extra flow means that they might just allow the compressors to hit their straps. From what I have seen I agree with what others have said in that the 71mm compressor it slightly choked by the hot side so trying to flow more through the same housing/turbine is slightly a step in the wrong direction.

I'd like to see what a cropped GT30 turbine fitted to 52 trim 71mm compressor would go like, should allow the full potential of the GT-RS compressor to realised.

I will have my T518Z (kando dynamic) results up within a week. Will post to the Kando thread, will be on an SR but comparisons should be fairly relative.

I have to say, so far the T518Z SR shits on a GTRS SR........ And I am expecting it to make the same if not more power. I cant see why anyone would pick a GTRS over a T518Z given housing constraints werent an issue.

D_Strils depending on how this current T518Z adventure goes I may approach Stao about making my 2860RS into something more. The aim would be to lose as little response as possible but get it up to 270kw.

Will be interesting to see :) TD05 > GT28... I'm trying to hold it in, but I think GT28s have no place on RBs. If people want >400hp, they should have a decent single. If you want less than 400hp, toughen up ;)

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
