I just bought a netgear wifi extender that acts like a repeater. main reason i got it was so that i could plug my tv, ps3 etc over Ethernet (into the extender) and get better connections on them. working a treat so far

Previously had the d-link powerline AV kit (Ethernet over power) hooked up to a 5 port router which worked fine for ages then all of a sudden had a mass of connection problems between the two EoP units.

if you're talking point to point, a couple of guys from work have set up Ubiquiti Nanostations between their homes from the TV aerial, with ~500m distance LOS of course.

I can get signal from our Cisco WAPs at work up to 100m away (as in a usable signal)

I could borrow a 'friends' internet from across the apartment block, must have gone through at least 2-3 slabs of concrete and was on the opposite side as i had to build a "dish" to increase the signal :D

So roughly at least 150m with the little enhancement, worked well. Got a increase of around 25% (up from 25%) so it was usable for its purpose.

ubiquiti? yeah, we're looking at creating a private wireless network to all the guys who actually live in Mildura for teamed internets, and therefore awesome torrenting potential

Yep, one of the point-to-point setups, it was ~$700 I think.

Pretty sure I have used those, seemed to be all good then a car pulled in and the link died. Was about 30M with two glass doors between the two points, I suspect one had metalic tint though. Ended up running a cable.

The ubiquti stuff is supposed to be really good from what i have heard.

Longest range i have seen is about 150m. We run all cisco stuff at our school, and had this older couple come in one day asking about there laptop, it was obvious they weren't students or parents either. They lived in a house that was about 150m away from the school, and since we moved fron netgear to cisco their laptop started auto-connecting to our schools open wireless network! They were running wireless B in their house from memory, and our wireless N that was more than 150m away was giving a stronger signal and they had somehow set it up so it autoconnects to our network! We had a laugh and had to set the laptop up for them and haven't had another problem since.

  • 4 weeks later...

just installed a setup on a farm

wrt54gl with dd-wrt on 150mw

used a 10dbi omni antenna mounted on a mast 15 metres AGL.

picked up a solid link up on a hill 11km away using a flat panel directional antenna. Did not do thoroughput test though :(

Was able to make a quality skype video call.

  • 1 month later...

I work for an ISP. We use the Ubiquity stuff daily. The M5 nanostations and bridges are great. Require a clear view to each other however. The Rocket M5's and M2's are also good. Havnt had much luck with the Loco 900s though. Tend to just call them junk lol.

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
