hi all, now i'm not to mechenical so basicly i know buggar all lol first off roughly what's a safe temp for oil to be running at on a track day? i know it's pumping alot harder so i expect it to rise a bit is there a temp that you should start to back off at and if it get's up to high what can happen? as in could it blow up or seize? any info would be great cheers

I would say that 110 is probably where you should maybe have a cool down lap?

it depends on the day too, if its hot the car is going to run much hotter.

i find that when my oil starts getting above 80 degrees the water temp starts rising quickly too, my gauges have warnings and they were going off last trackday when i was boiling the coolant. i had to put it in the pits and pour water over the radiator.

this was a pretty warm day in November, but other days i have been out there for a full session and had no temp problems.

i try and just use a rule of thumb that if i'm going near 100 degrees i should back off and cool it down, because if your oil is near 100degrees the water is going to be pretty similar. they both flow through the block, its just water transfers heat better than oil and warms up quicker.

ok cheers brezza i won't go as long between cool downs this time,last time i let it hit the 150 mark as the water temp was still sitting on half way

The stock gauges aren't very helpful in monitoring temps. If your water temp gets to halfway then it's already starting to overheat

+1 the stock water temp gauge is rubbish!

i have after market gauges and they went off at 105 degrees for water temp and when i pulled into the pits the coolant was boiling in the overflow.

the stock gauge still was in the middle! so it really goes to show its useless!

the stock guage will be in the middle at 40 degrees right up to over 100degrees.

if your stock guage moves above halfway its already too late, you've probably cooked the engine.

unless your using cheap shitty oil you'll almost always boil the coolant before you get the oil hot enough to break down instantly. you'll reduce its life a fair bit by running that hot though, which is why ideally you should change your oil after a track day if you dont have good cooling.

The temp guages in question are in 34's or 33's? my 33 gtst stays halfway all the time except in heavy traffic or stopped on a 45*+ day. I didnt even have a thermo fan. I do now. 2 of them. But when it was getting hot it was a needle width above halfway. And normally was half a needle width under half. Never boiled.

Now i have 2 thermo's, a 52mm twin core radiator and new thermostatic HEL oil cooler, id be fitting a good cooler and bigger radiator if your cooking it on the track IMO

ah 34 gtt the oil temp gadge is standard one in the cluster in middle of dash board and the coolant temp is shown on a nismo dash cluster the coolant's never gone past half but the oil temp has shown 150 before when i was given it a hiding and bud would have no idea where it's taken from,dose it make a differance?

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
    • Very good news...I contacted Racebox about it last night. My car is a 2016 so remains to be seen if it is compatible, requires a TCU swap, or is impossible.
    • What ECU are you running? This is probably the biggest question. If it's a PowerFC, I'd probably change the ECU and get something newer that will handle the injectors in a nicer way.
