Hey guys

Just looking to see if anyone knows the rough costs of an engine rebuild

I dont mean anything fancy or high number capable.

Just thinking about the options on bringing the car back to what it was like when it was new.

I guess just keeping all the stock internals but replacing with new ones

I wouldn't even know what to replace to be honest other then pistons because of the rings being worn out.

Thanks for the help

No need to replace the pistons unless they are damaged. You just need new rings and bearings (Crank journal and big end), new oil seals for either end of the crank and gaskets all round. Do the valve stem seals in the head while your at it too, plus the oil pump and water pump. I've only done an SR20, and I would put aside $3000 for a good rebuild with OEM replacement parts (SRs have a chain which costs a lot to replace). Expect more if there are any unexpected discoveries. Don't really know the costs for an RB though, could be different.

i think you'd have to measure the piston to bore clearance, if you are after as new condition i would think the pistons would be on the cards

Thanks for a rough idea.

Sounds worth the while if its around the $3000 mark

I am just chasing a safe and reliable 250kw which I have a list of all the things needed.

Just want to make the engine as perfect as I can.

Was that with all the work done yourself?

I will just be doing it slowly myself with a mate to show me the ropes.

Do it when the engine goes pop man. Safe and reliable 250rwkw is a walk in the park for an unopened engine, assuming the tune is good. Mine's been going happily for over a year now with 295rwkw - healthy as ever.

Really only $3k for a rebuild? What about time to take the engine in and out?

ESP quoted about $6K awhile back for an RB26 (freshen up), all new seals etc. Not that ESP was ever the cheapest but might give you another idea. Add another $10k and you could get a full stroker rebuild :-)

For a GTST, drop in a RB26, 250kw all day.

Hey Troy how many km has your car done?

Mine is around the 185 000km mark.

Rb26 twin turbo?

With the 3k rebuild I think he is talking about doing it yourself.

You can knock a fair chunk off without the cost of labour I guess

Cars should never blow if looked after, treated right and all regular maintenance done an schedul. I try to over do it if anything, esp when i have a car that i push a little.

A rebuild should only be needed if the engine has been mistreated or pushed very hard, or you intend to push it hard and need things upgraded, replaced or refurbished... (or the engine is decently old).

All the best with it dude, and your research for rebuilds and parts etc can come in handy for if i ever want or need to do the same someday!

Haha seems like you and I Jason are soaking in all the knowledge off these guys.

We also seem to be going the same way with our builds.

I was looking into it because I dont have any idea of the history of the past 179 000km on the car.

The guy I purchased it off took me for a drive and thought doing 110 down a side street in 3rd gear would make me want it even more.

Hmmmm... That would make me buy the car less... Mine was well looked after and hardly driven.

Yours is bout the age to rebuild any hoo... But i like to be prepared.

Bought a new trolley jack and stands for doing work recently (inc oil change, but also changing my dif and gearbox oil in the next couple weeks) and hoping to have my boost controller back and installed by then).

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
