Hey guys,

Those you who know me know I'm a pasty pale geek who gets most of his tan from his computer monitor. However this Summer I'm looking to get some colour (I'm not trying to change ethinicity).

My question is, how?

I do not want to burn myself to a crisp, its unhealthy and painful. So should I just head out in the sun topless for 30min per day, or am I better off going out with sunscreen for several hours?

How effective is sunscreen at blocking a tan?

Am I better going out at 12-2pm, or later in the afternoon when the sun is less harsh?

Thanks guys.

Healthiest way to tan is with fake.

Or be born with dark skin.

Realistically though, just play in the sun all day with sunscreen on...you will still tan a little but won't burn. Or, yes, I've stood in my back yard before, topless, for around 20 minutes each day and this very slowly gives you colour - thus driving arm occurs over time even though your arm doesn't get spontaneously burnt and feel painful.

I'm similar to you, in that I'm white as fark...

But I've picked up some reasonable colour arms and shoulders.

3-4 days over the past 3 weeks been out in the sun for ~90mins with SPF30+ on.

Making sure I don't just stay 'back' to the sun kinda thing. But just rotate

Also was in the water at the time (aspendale beach).

End of the day its not a great tan but I ain't milk white now :)

And fark cancer, everything gives you cancer. Hell I could be hit by a bus in 6 months time.

I don't deliberately roast myself, so if it happens I get cancer so be it.

You guys should try a living in northern Japan where you put away the shorts and t-shirts around mid ~ late Oct and they dont come out of mothballs until June.

Then your covered with snow from late Nov to May.

You guys have never seen white !!

I felt like a vampire hiding from the sun over Xmas and New Year period here in Oz.

yeah but if you get hit by a bus it's good bye Ash.

if you get cancer, you will be strung along on my tax money, barely staying alive while feeling and looking like death for who knows how long.

the whole skin cancer thing has been blown way out of proportion... sunscreen stops your skin from producing vitamin D so most people are deficient (and its a really good vitamin, look it up)... especially women who use moisturizer every day that has 15+ in it

don't go getting burnt but make sure you get at least 15mins here and there of sun without sunscreen... I always go out without it then put it on after 15min... that's between 11am and 4pm though... if its after 4pm I don't usually bother (have a look at the UV charts)

I'm usually really pale but have managed to get a nice tan this summer without ever getting burnt

my parents never had sunscreen... they used to go out and get badly burnt repeatedly until their skin adapted... now my old man gets his skin checked regularly and has had lots of suspicious moles removed, so there is a happy medium between that and those sickly pale looking kids running around with 500 layers on at the beach and those stupid farking tents people always set up right in front of me!

and I'll leave you with this... there is new research to suggest some sunscreen ingredients might be cancerous

Do you think that the whole concept of desiring a tan is a cultural-fashion thing?

Isn't it the exact opposite in places like Japan where fair skin is the desired norm?

Sorry about going onto a tangent > but just analysing motive....

This is definitely the norm in the older generation but the Japanese would have to be some of the worst offenders I have seen for sunburn.

Hit any popular beach in Japan through summer and the younger generation will be out in droves baking away.

Japanese so called 50+ is useless, just like their fly spray.

I've seen Japanese surfers in Bali and other parts on Indonesia looking like they leprosy with skin peeling off from severe sunburn and yet they'll be out there frying in the sun unprotected again getting burn upon burn because its cool to to look sun tanned and have the surfer girl/boy look.

Absolutely no idea whatsoever when it comes to basic sun protection. At least in oz we are taught from a child to slip, slop slap.

Tell that to a Japanese at the beach and they'll think its some sort of oishi ice cream.

Its the Korean women who wont go near the sun.

Dear oh dear...

That sounds like the group of Slavs that came along and quit smoking last year. I asked a couple of men, "Just like us Asians that prolifically smoke, why do so many Slavs smoke?" They all said, "You're not a man unless you smoke!"

So the corollary for the Korean man is, "You're not a man unless you tan!" ??

singlet tan at the nats. that is all

In 2002 melanomas and other skin cancers caused 0.12% of deaths in the US. That's number 75 down the most-common-way-to-die list.

Check your family history and your skin with a GP and calculate the risk then decide yourself whether it's worth it :)

Definitely tan with sunscreen on, I always use 30SPF and am well brown. There's nothing cool about being a crab person who turns into a Holstein cow.

    • Had another look at the car and I noticed the fuel pump isn't priming on ignition. I'd taken out the pump from the boot to siphon out the old fuel, so maybe I've knocked something loose or broken a wire putting things back together. Will go back with a multimeter and try to work out what's stuffed. Kinda hoping it's the pump itself thats gone so I can upgrade it
    • Yeah agreed, you can't assume that shop are they only people who ever had to work on it. It was just a guess on the mods based on how things were done back then. You can check the Air Flow Meters by the part number on their tags, they are likely either Z32 or Nismo ones (both read about the same but the Z32 one is a little larger while nismo is stock size but supports the higher airflow like a Z32). And yes, all that would get you to 450hp / 340kw To tell what is happening with the turbos, you want a photo of the tag on the core, that will say what it was made out of  (they can retain the front and rear covers to make the plumbing easier)
    • I'm selling my personal race car. 1992 BNR32 Skyline GT-R About eight years ago the engine developed the dreaded low oil pressure problem. I removed it and found the issue. However shortly after I moved half way across the country, moved my work shop, bought a house, got married, then moved my shop again to it's permanent location for the time being. in turn I do not have the time to race this car as it should be. In turn the engine I built for this car will end up in my street car and this car I hope finds a home with someone who can use it to it's full potential. The roll bar was built by Jason Noren Fabricaiton in Pomona California to SCCA and NASA Specs. The car used to compete in redline time attack and global time attack enthusiast class. It also has a fire suppression system.  The car is with me at my workshop in Kyle Texas, USA. Shipping it is no problem, I can personally deliver the car to the port of either Houston or Los Angeles. Any other port depending on where it is may require transport but we can always work that out.   The chassis itself is rust free, rear quarters and under fenders are free of any rust so it's a very solid foundation for anyone who wishes to move forward with it. As posted and at the asking price of $20,000 USD the car includes all of the following;   All OEM Body panels, front fenders, rear bumpers etc.  OEM Nissan Projector headlamps (Pictured N1 lamps were removed) OEM Nismo Side Skirts / Extensions OEM Rear Spats  Front & Rear Subframes are installed car is full roller Rear Subframe has Cusco Camber Arms, Whiteline HICAS Elimination Front Subframe has Whiteline tension rods and whiteline Sway bars w/ endlinks.  Buddy Club N1 Coilovers All chassis wiring and engine wiring is in tact. Attessa System is fully in tact and was functional before engine removal.  BCNR33 GT-R Brembo Brakes F+R with Endless MX72 Plus Pads, DBA Rotors & Stainless Steel Brake lines Billion Racing Radiator Billion Radiator Hoses Fluidyne Engine Oil Cooler Accusump System (trunk Mounted) 5 Speed Transmission w/ Transfer Case F+R Prop-shafts Rear Differential With rear Axles.  Nismo Gauge Cluster Nismo Clutch + Flywheel   Essentially what is needed to make this car running and driving again is as follows: A working Engine, an ECU, and time to put it together. The price posted is or best offer as I am willing to remove some components to accommodate price to a certain extent. If any serious buyer wants full detailed pictures, videos, or any questions I'll be happy to answer them. I believe this car is priced to move quickly considering it's a rust free and very straight chassis but always open to fair negotiation.  I can be contacted via phone or email. • So...to my (and my mechanics doing the swap) surprise...the oil pan from NEO engine does not fit 100% and needs to by modified like this: It is not a huge problem but in the future i want a "proper" oil pan. So question is...what different oil pan can i get to fit without any problems and modification? Thanks!
