Hi All,

I'm in the process of purchasing my very own 'zilla, and I really need some help with wheel size selection as I'm getting some rims made to spec.

I've read quite a bit on here and other forums, and I think I have a reasonable idea of what I want/need.

This car will be for street use, and I'd like the rims and tyres to sit *just* inside the guards, or maybe flush, but definitely not proud of the guards. At this stage I don't want to roll or lip the guards.

I would like to run 18x9.5 or 18x10 all round with un-stretched tyres, so I'm just trying to determine what combination of rim size and offset would achieve the desired stance. From what I've read of similarly-configured R32s, I think the offset needs to be about +20 - +30.

For reference the suspension includes HKS Hipermax coilovers & Noltec adjustable front upper control arms, brake rotors are DBA 4000 with standard calipers, also equipped with a Tomei HICAS lock.

I know 18 x 10 +22 will sit flush (Directly under your guards) with some negative camber.

A friend of mine has BBS wheels in that size with HKS Hipermax coilovers and looks great.

No guard work needed as he has just lowered it till there is no wheel arch gap.

It sounds like I need 18x9.5 with +15 offset, 'cos I want to keep camber neutral.

Am I right in saying that to move the wheels further inside the guards, I would need to increase the amount of offset?

Yes, the higher the offset, the further the wheels sit in.

18 x 9.5 +15 will sit nice.

Since 18 x 10 is half an inch wider, it will poke out just a tad, so you have to raise the offset to +22 to make it sit back in flush again.

If you stick to the 18 x 9.5 +12 / +15 or around about that fitment, you'd still get something good.

+22 is the "correct" fit.

I've read a lot that +12 will be fine on a 18x9.5 rim, BUT there are many suspension factors that affect fit. On a stock lowered car +12 might be fine. But when you start playing with camber and caster and aftermarket suspension arms, it all goes out the window.

I have 18x9 +30 R34 GTR rims, and if I add the quarter inch plus 18mm I get the outside of the rim sitting 24mm further out. On the rears of my 32 GTR, given my suspension settings (and other factors such as 3piece rotors with a thicker alloy hat pushing out the hubs marginally), this will protrude the wheel outside the guard. Now I could tip some more -ve camber but it is set up to handle, not to fit a set of wheels in. So unless I want to compromise the suspension set up, +12s will be too wide.

On the front, the +12s will fit fine in terms of not protruding from the guard. However, as I have a stack of caster, the front wheels are further forward in the wheel arches than stock. Therefore as you turn the wheels, the outside edge of the tyre/wheel catches the front of the inner guard. If you increase the offset, this will mean the wheel will contact the inner guard with even less lock applied. So again, I don't want to change the suspension geometry to fit wheels, I'd rather get the right fit wheels to work with the suspension set up that is currently set up for handling.

Thanks for taking the time to add that info Ronin, definitely helps clarify and confirm my thinking.

So for the time being I believe I need +22, possibly up to +25 like the 18x9.5 Bee-R wheels.. but I won't really know until I take delivery of the car, and have the opportunity to test-fit some wheels with the same specs.

    • Input shaft bearing. They all do it. There is always rollover noise in Nissan boxes - particularly the big box. Don't worry about it unless it gets really growly.
    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
