Then do it again with the v cam ( I think drag times would show f all difference I am mainly interested in the lap time difference )

I agree. V cam on the strip would make no difference whatsoever.

I am so tempted to get V can myself. But can you explain a few things for me:

1, What influences your choice of HKS step 1,2 and Pro kit?

2, how do you check valve clearance for VCam to operate? Do you have to machine the Piston recess to get valve clearance?

If I am running 272 Step 2 HKS intake cams already, does that mean piston recess would have been machined in already?

Your 272's would be 10.2 mm of lift so they would of had to relieve the head for the lobe to spin. As for the piston, im not 100% sure when that needs to be done. My last engne was running Tomei 270 @ 10.25 mm cams and the pistons were not relieved. Ask Chris (if he is doing the work) to pop a plug out and have a look.

Step 1,2 and Pro.

Step 1 moves 30 degrees and uses a 248 @ 8.6 mm cam. You can run that with stock pistons. Dan (Silver Nur) ran this kit on his engine.

Step 2 moves 50 degrees and uses a 264 @ 8.7 mm cam. You need to have pistons relieved for this kit. Step 1 and 2 are the same price.

Pro moves 50 degrees also and uses a 264 @ 10.0 mm cam. Like step 2 you need valve relieved pistons. This kit is expensive because it comes with an ECU which you pretty much chuck in the bin (You wouldnt use it). Unfortunately you can't buy the Pro kit without the ECU.

Extra 50% torque (300 nm vs 450 nm) at 4000 RPM.

What setup did you use on your Nur? I can't remember now.

I chose step 2 because it was no more expensive than the step one but i'm going to try and use my current intake cam I have in the car at the moment. It cant be too hard, its just a bit of machining.

Great results! I wonder what the increase in fuel mileage is on these setups?

Also step 2 is on sale on rhdjapan.com looks like substantial savings over the others. I did have my head machined and have valve-relieved pistons. Damnit you make me spend money!! Anyone want some brand new poncam A's?!

You just missed out on the free exhaust cam they threw in when you buy any v cam kit. Makes it even cheaper :D.

Car is in a mates garage ATM. This weekend with any luck I'll take it out to where the exhaust is getting done and continue that. Put the front bar back on and start doing all the braided lines and fittings. Not looking forward to buying that stuff. Hate that shop!!!!

Tune? When ever it's done I suppose. Who knows when that will be.

Vcam setups work best on the street, make the engine feel bigger due to more low/midrange torque (cylinder pressure).

My 2.8 now has VCT setup (otomoto kit) and it's great, makes -5's feel like -9's, but you keep the -5's top end :)

If anyone cares: Intake 260deg 9.15mm lift, 0-20 deg sweep (NEO cam actuator), exhaust 252deg 9.7mm lift.

Piggaz' setup will be epic for a 'street car' heheh.

I won't run E85 because I work in the OIL FIELD not the CORN FIELDS. :)

But honestly the only E85 station is an hour away one way. I'd have to fill drums up and truck it here to store...which I'm not 100% sure is legal without certain permits.

Dang missed the free exhaust cam :(

Oh well next time I guess. I have bigger issues worried about my stock transmission living through the current Torque and HP expectations so I should probably invest in beefing up the trans before adding more torque!

At this point, I just want to hear my car run!

I prefer stock look of Otomoto kit.

Any opinions?

I suppose in theory the Vcam would be the superior product as it is variable (not on and off like the Nissan VCT) and swings further. I don't know if anyone has done a back to back between both systems.

    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
