I was working on my R32 GTR and thought it would be a good idea to leave the cam cover off. Well I started it and all was fine until I noticed that the bolts on the cam gear were interfering with the Cas. I immediately shut the engine off and removed the Cas to find it very hard to turn and noticed the half circle from the cam had snapped off. Anyways I bought a new Cas and aligned the cas to the cam 100% correctly and now the exhaust pops but won't start at all. I'm assuming the timing is out but have no idea how this could happen. What do I do to get my car running again? Please help if you have an idea.

Thanks

same happened with my setup, i snapped the cam gear thing off, you just need to get the cams aligning with the marks, should be able to look in there with a torch and simply slide the cam angle sensor in where it would of match up and you'll be fine, the cas might need turnt one way more than before, so try again,

you must of just put it in on the wrong angle which has made the timing wrong.

make sure you space it right with the old seal from the cover.

Thanks for the help mate.

I've tried putting the cas on about 10 times everytime ensuring that it was going in right and still nothing. Even with the new Cas I bought, the cam has still got just enough of a lip on it so that the Cas only goes in one way.

I might try put the cover back on instead of using washers to space it and see if that does anything. If that doesn't help then I'm clueless.

i first did this with my old gtr when i left the cover off, you need to put washers between the CAS and CAS bracket otherwise it makes contact with the bolts that hold the cam gears on and will grind the shit out of the CAS

As well as the half circle in the cam, there is a set of teeth on the cam and the CAS that mesh together when the CAS is installed. So you can set it up about 10 different ways if the half circle is missing.

There is only one mounting position for the CAS that will allow the engine to start.

Thanks for the help guys. Doing a bit of research it seems that a lot of people have made the same mistake as me by not spacing the Cas out from the cam. I'll try different Cas positions tomorrow and hopefully I can get it started.

Did you set the timing after you put the CAS on?

Remember that once it is on it can still rotate left or right to adjust timing (like a distributor on an older car)

You really need to get a timing light and check the timing once the CAS is on. 15 degrees (middle mark on the harmonic balancer)

it really is tricky and be careful or you might end up breaking the cas like i did,

double check the bracket itself is on properly with the two dowels lined up and going into the holes on the bracket, tighten every bolt gradually and equally, use the mark on the cas to line it up,

you only need to use that black seal with the washers in it already, the one from the cover, and you should be right.

Well I tried to get it started today and have had no luck whatsoever. I'm not sure if the motor is full of fuel now or the spark plugs are too wet to fire but it just doesn't want to start. Really confused on what to do right now.

you might have the half moon 180degrees out, can you seen inside the cam gear part so that your lining it up properly,

Does the cas feel like it hits home , if its quite loose feeling it might be broken inside,

plugs will be getting wet too, but it should still start , try not to be cranking it for too long, it should turn over fast if its in the right spot.

Yeah there's a shiny half on the end of the cam that I'm obviously assuming is where it has snapped off. I've lined it up a million times now but still nothing. I'm starting to think I've bought a dodgy Cas sensor.

Yeah it slots in nicely and I've checked to make sure it's spinning when it's being turned over. You can also hear the injectors ticking when its cranking which would suggest that it is working. I bought it second hand off someone who had a spare for his GTR. I'm tempted to get someone to have a look at it as it's starting to do my head in as to what could be causing it not to start. Maybe there's a bigger problem but it's confusing because it was working beforethe tooth snapped off from the cam when I ran it with no cover.

CAS types sorry photos didn't copy but you can tell early one becasue of metal case and Mitsubishi logo later one by plastic case (Hitachi).

This is an R33 one (Mitsubishi) 23731 02U11 metal case

This is an R34 CAS -(Hitachi) 23731 5L 300 plastic case

I don't think the wrong one would engage properly with the drive on the end of the cam so if it fits ok you could just try reversing the wiring.

R34 CAS

pin 1 = earth

pin 2 = power

pin 3 = 1 deg

pin 4 = 120 deg

R33 Cas

pin 1 = 120

pin 2 = 1

pin 3 = power

pin 4 = earth

And making it easier basically showing that:

1 swaps with 4

2 swaps with 3

3 swaps with 2

4 swaps with 1

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
