I have tried to get a quote from Shannons and they were not remotely interested. Just because you managed to get insurance with them with your Stag - you might have jagged an understanding/import owner consultant and got lucky. Doesn't mean I "carry on". And fyi most insurers rely on a Redbook value of our cars for replacement, and as ours are not in the Redbook means that most insurers won't touch them. Seems that RACQ and NRMA are exceptions, which is good for choice for import owners.

I have my car insured with Shannons also, there were no problems in obtaining it either. And if your car isnt in Redbook, they should insure it for agreed value.

And iamhe77 I can't bloody wait until you have a major accident then come on here and sook that the mean insurance company won't pay you out, as they decide that items on your car made it unroadworthy. Of course they can not pay at their discretion, so me giving that advice is not just "going on". I was just pointing things out to guys on here so that they can make a full and educated decision about their insurance.

The NM35 Stagea that iamhe77 had was written off last October, and Shannons paid out the insurance claim (agreed value) with no question asked.

Haha, you do humour me although I am sure that is not your intent.

My NM35 Stagea was insured over 5 years ago and no, it wasn't listed in Redbook nor in Glasses Guide, nor do I belong to a car club or hold a CAMS license.

Your first paragraph reeks of a lack of effort or excuses... or both. Maybe try a little harder like ringing Shanons back and speaking to another operator. Not difficult. Just because you couldn't get it done doesn't mean it can't be done, but I understand we are all speaking from our relative experiences.

Second paragraph is nice, thank you for your well wishes. Very classy.

I did actually have my car written off last October as pv35gt8 correctly stated. My car was insured for well over what it was worth (called agreed value for your reference) and Shannons paid it out (4 business days) after the assessor spoke to me about the possible repair bill, the difficulty in obtaining the correct parts and then signing it off as a repairable write off.

Reference - my car mods included had a full front end update to the series 2 model, suspension, turbo back exhaust, intake, intercooler kit, turbo, additional coolers, Fcon etc etc.

Like I said, as long as it is listed on your policy, it is part of your agreement with the insurer and their agreement with you.

Whilst you are online, feel free to find me a price on a 2001-2003 250t RS Four Stagea in Redbook... actually scratch that, I'll do the work for you

OP - Shannons, Lumley, Just Car, Famous are four just off the top of my head that insure imports. Give them a call and find out for yourself instead of asking for Epinions (factual or not).

I'm with AI Insurance which was the cheapest and best for me.

I found a load of info from this V35 insurance thread:

http://www.skylinesa..._1#entry6366708

These were my quotes 2 months ago:

NRMA - $1758

Suncorp - $2361

Justcar- $1554

AI Insurance - $1065

Shannons as usual declined, don't know why I bothered - AI couldn't do enough to get my business, courtesy calls and emails, not pushy, just interested.

i gave up on insurers almost a decade ago. theyre all full of fake promises and only interested in making a profit (they are a business after all) especially after paying over $1000 per year for nothing when the time came

if you read the fineprint, most say that even if an accident is not your fault, you are found 25% in the wrong just by being there.

ive heard of insurers even refusing to pay for an accident in which the car was in the owners garage and hit by an out of control car...

its everybodys right to choose whichever insurer suits their situation, its the insurers right to not pay you a cent if they can find a single reason not to.

i personally think all insurers are a scam.

^ agree somewhat, they find every reason under the sun not to pay out but will happily take your premium under the guise of 'read the PDS' disclaimers. Then if you do qualify for a payout you have to pay an excess for the privilege!

but as far as I know EVERY financer requires you to have insurance so unless you have the cash to buy outright you have no choice. Can't wait til I'm 25 & it starts getting slightly cheaper

Funnily enough Justcars have been the cheapest for me & the lowest claim excess everytime I've quoted for both the skyline & xtrail

but as far as I know EVERY financer requires you to have insurance so unless you have the cash to buy outright you have no choice. Can't wait til I'm 25 & it starts getting slightly cheaper

^they also want to be named as an interested party on the certificate- got finance, insurance is I think always mandatory

Shannons had a clause a few years back that stated that you have to have at least 5 years driving experience before you can qualify (I had only had my license for 4 years and a few months).

In terms of finance, if it's a secured loan having insurance is mandatory. The 'bank' has an interest in the vehicle and hence if anything happens, they will still get their money. Have even heard of situations where the financier has negotiated a lesser sum to be paid in excess to the insurer... not certain on the validity of this though.

Couldn't agree more, this is why i'm being extremely careful with mods for the rest of my time with RACQ. I think it's ridiculous how insurance companies are so happy to take a huge amount of your money for "protection", but when the time comes for the money you've paid to be returned it's dragged on and you're right they WILL find anything under the sun to NOT give you a pay out.

I needed some cash for house renovations & so used a couple of cars as collateral for a loan. Of course I then required insurance (haven't been a fan of insurance companies for a long time) & wouldn't you know - previously having a "rating 1 for life" doesn't apply unless you are continually insured.

I managed to get around it for the best possible outcome in my scenario, but sometimes you have to be creative. They suck the joy out of car ownership, lol.

What would happen if you insured a parent as the primary driver and yourself as an occasional driver?

Or with NRMA and you are covered, just pay bit higher excess and make their insurance for all their cars more $ for the next 3 years if you claim.

Ok so it does tend to depend on Location (where you park your car) Age and Driving record - These are the bigest factors that will tip the cost for insurance. the cheapest and safest (will actualy honour a Claim with little or no drama ) are NRMA, JustCar and AMMI (Note Justcar is a subsidiary or AMMI )

i found the Best thing to do is get quotes from online sites such as Bingle or Budget Car insurance then call NRMA and just car insurance and play them against eachother in a bid to get the lowest price

I curently have my V35 insured with NRMA for Agreed Value of 35,000 and i only pay $130/month and that includes mods and Glass insurance and im under 25

companies that give better deals like Budget direct have small disclaimers in the policies that state even if ur not at fault you have to pay an excess then once the claim has been formalised and the other party pays the cost of the repairs you get the excess reinbursed (my Gf copped that and is in the contract)

Basicaly you pay the excess if they cant get the money back from the other person!

I found GIO and Alianz take forever to get back to you and drag on the process,I Even have had a close relative under investigation and took 2 months to get the process approved, thats 2 months without a car.

each person has and will have diferent expiriences but if you troll the forums enough you will find what you want and best suits you. and make sure you read the dam fineprint

I'm with Justcars and just pay $850 something for comprehensive cover. However my excess is high as i intentionally kept it high to lower the premium. I had two accidents so far, one was my fault and the other one was the other party's. I had no issues with my claims.

By the way the one which wasnt my fault cost around $8K to fix as the lady behind me ran into my car and rear bumper had to be replaced.

Sooo what was i saying...... If you change little bits and pieces, I would not call them modification and would not bother to call the insurance as they take it seriously. the worst case scenario, if something happens to.... lets say your clear side indicator, they would replace it with the original one (orange one). But once you give them a class and say I did this change, they would be more than happy to charge you more.

It won't be when you renew... I've just got mine and it has gone up 50% since last year (financial) even though we have no clams etc .... They say it's because of the hail damage earlier in the year - which they paid out on but others didn't - and should 'hopefully' be a one year spike.

So anybody getting their renewal now (since 1/2/2012) from Just is in for a bit of a shock...

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey guys been a while since I posted here (having our first child takes up most of my time and well worth it!),

Got my insurance bill this week for our 2003 V35 black/black manual sedan. Apparently the value dropped $11k from last year. Has anyone had this issue? I expected it to drop (as most cars do), but $11k? I am with NRMA at the moment, $890 for $15,600. Personally I think if it was auto, I would agree with the $15,600 part but being manual to replace would cost more, I was thinking maybe $18k?

We could change to Just Cars for $21,000 at $980, but heard they can be difficult to work with. Reading through here maybe AI could be worth a call.

I rang Shannon's as I was insured with them years ago, that's 10minutes of my life I won't get back.......

How old are you? I dare say the reason why Shannons weren't remotely interested is probably because you're not 30 and over.

I called Shannons back in late-2006 about my turbocharged Maxima and they insured me over the phone at a value that was as reasonable as it could get. I was 29 and 10 months at the time.

When my vehicle was involved in a collision, three years ago, I was given the first priority to buy the vehicle back at the value quoted by the auctioneers, which I did.

When I got my BA wagon about 8 months later, they insured me right away at a price better than all the other major players in NSW despite my collision with the Maxima and full no-claim bonus.

Then when I got my V36 earlier this year, again, I was insured over the phone without any fuss for the full $55k on-road cost that I spent on it.

I honestly don't know what gave you the impression that Shannons don't do import vehicles when they make it abundantly clear that they'll insure just about anything with an engine in it.

I'm not having a go at you about this directly but I'm just making sure that nobody here in this thread is left with the false impression that Shannons don't insure import vehicles when they clearly do though they may be a bit more selective about their drivers, perhaps.

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
