Hey guys, as my title states, what is best size rim (and tyre) for motorsport in an R32 GTR?

Currently running 17x9's with 255's at the moment. Will 18x9's or 18x10's make the handling worse?

I have some lightweight 17 x 8.5 rims for the track because I can use ex NZV8 series slicks which I can buy for $200 a set only half worn. See what size slicks you can get in 17in at a good price and buy rims to suit.

For my street tyres I have a set of TE37 17 x 9in - something like that would be good if you can get them at a reasonable price.

I actually have a set of R32 GTR rims that I use at the moment because I have a big stack of used semi's in that size. However I'm going to need to upgrade the brakes soon so I need a rim to suit at least a 330mm rotor, which is why I thought I might need to upgrade to 18's.

The rim selection is alot about brake & tyre selection.

You will struggle to get anything larger than a 345mm rotor under a 17" rim, although some with TE37's say it is fine.

As for tyres a 255 width is good for an R32 R. Understand that R comps are often wider than their nominal size indicates. That fits ups nice to a 9" rim. 9.5" is you must. A 17" R comp (good ones not the bottom of the barrel stuff that gets mentioned on here alot) is about $100 cheaper per corner than an equivalent 18.

As for offset a +22 on the rear is good although you can use more on the front (smaller number, wider track eg +15) due to the amount of -ve camber you need to run on the things.

Other factors are weight & cooling. Dont buy cheap rims they fail in both those areas.

FWIW I use 17*9+22 with a 255/40/17 tyre. The rear guard lips need to be rolled and the front could use a fatter offset but Rays dont make the rims in the offset I want anymore.

Bottom line: If you can afford the coin for the tyres get the 18's. 9" width is enough. Dont listen to the hektic fitment types. What is fully sik in their world doesnt make much sense when you want some actual lap speed.

Should be about right. NFI what pcd's Emos run so just check it is 4.5 inches. Also that the load capacity of the rim is right & finally that they clear the rotor/calliper you use. Cant imagine it is a problem for any of these things.

In the olden days a 17*9+22 rim was the default option for aftermarket rims sizes. Then the fitment thing came along....

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
