Another update:

Slowly getting things done, almost ready to put the head back on.

Cleaned the surface of the block.

Also spent quite a bit of time getting the head gasket as clean as possible. Just needs a coat of hylomar and is ready to go back in.

After

Layed down a coat of VHT. Unfortunately it's TERRIBLE weather to be spraying but meh, the quality is not that important. As long as it's not blue!

More progress today, exams are approaching so it really should be time to get studying :whistling:

Installed the new water pump

Wrinkled the lower timing belt cover, just to prove to myself that lighter coats would work better. I didn't spend alot of time on prepping this item so some bits of paint was left over

which you can see in this photo, but obviously once it's on the car, it's a different story.

And it's finally starting to look a little more like an engine again!

And the work continues tomorrow

It does look cleaner without, but it is there for a reason. Did you have the head shaved/skimmed at all? Or at the very least, clean it up with an oil stone? I'm just asking because the block and head surfaces need to be flat, especially when using a MLS head gasket.

Cleaned the head as best I could and checked for straightness as per manual instructions.

I do hear that MLS gaskets require a finer RA but this head looks pretty virgin. So it makes me wonder how it's been ok with the gasket that's in it thus far.

That and I've sprayed hylomar on both sides of the gasket. I'm hoping it will do the trick :)

Considering keeping the front cover off!

Compared to

Gives it more of a rough feel, yes, no?

although I agree with you that it looks tougher I am pretty certain it would give you a defect for not having the cam gears covered.

get a clear timing or by my VHT one ;)

Hey mate, i'm sure someone would back me up on this but i've learnt not to put hylomar on gasket material as it has a tendancy to shrink increasing your chance of leaking gasket, it is only good for metal on metal surfaces like decomp shims. best off spending the money getting head faced, should be between 50 to 100 bucks which is cheap in my opinion rather than having to strip it down and do a head gasket again

Why not get a Greddy clear belt cover, best of both worlds! Would suck to drop a bolt down there once it's back in the car. Nice build btw!

Very true about bolt falling down! Thanks man, did not think about that at all lol

Cover on it is!

Yeah I've decided cover on, will spray the covers closer to summer time :)

Hrmm, I have also heard alot of success stories with hylomar. A tuner has sprayed his a few times with no problems.

If it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. But thanks for the heads up, if I do have a whinge about it here you

can laugh at me and say I told you so :)

    • Agreed, I've never seen a 260RS specific manual. As GTSBoy said it will mostly be stagea other than the engine loom https://www.hgeconsulting.com.au/stageaservicemanual.pdf
    • You'lll likely have to make do with R33 GTR for engine/tranny stuff, and Stagea for the body. I don't know that there's even been an actual diagram seen in the wild.
    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
