Hi,

I have a R33 GTS-T and I am looking to upgrade my brakes to the largest calliper and rotor combo that I can fit under 17" rims.

I am looking for 2 piece floating rotors but if you do not have rotors that is ok as I am just as happy to purchase rotors brand new.

The car is a track car.

Message me with what you have with price, a photo and location.

A reasonable budget, it depends on what is on offer.

Currently I have P1 Racing 17x8 +22, I am lokoing to move to a 17x9 (unsure of offset yet).

I am currently using standard calipers and DBA4000 on the front and standard rear rotors. I am melting the DBA4000's.

My thoughts are to go to a bigger caliper and rotors. Planning on using 2 piece Performance Friction rotors front (they are cheeking atm if they can custom up a set of rear hats.

I use the car for sprints and now racing at Barbagallo (WA), this track is very hard on brakes.

I know I need larger rotors and a better cooling setup. I have been thinking about GTR Brembo calipers front and rear for the extra 8% pad coverage with 330mm fronts and 300mm rear rotors.

Just so you know the F40 Brembo is another 10% pad area above the GTR Brembo and is a radial mount. Not that it is any recommendation but it is what I have albeit on a 324 rotor. You can get a 343 rotor which is about as much as you can shove under most 17" rims although some can fit in 355 which is an easier rotor to source.

Just to give you an idea.

I went up to a 324mm GTR rotor with a spacer on the caliper. I got 1 extra track day out of the pads a 2 laps more each session.

Moved to 330mm rotor with ksport 8 pot piston (APP 5555 design), 3 more track days out of the pads and the brake didn't go off during the session.

There is nothing either APP, or AP CP5555 about those calipers. They use the same pad shape...thats it. My calipers use a Porsche pad, just like many Harrops do...does not mean they are a Porsche caliper.

If you are going gung-ho then 355 with a good caliper can fit in SOME 17" wheels. 343mm is a much safer bet for rotor size and 17" wheels....but even then some 17s wont clear 343s if they are a cast design wheel.

That leaves you with the far more common 330-332mm rotor size and the plethora of setups that opens up to you. Frankly, pick budget and just go shopping...and wouldnt bother upgrading the rears. They are generally the same rotor size as std, just a little wider (2mm) and the caliper pistons are a tad bigger but you are hardly chasing more braking from the rear of a Skyline. If you have cash and done every other mod to reasonably get pace from the car then grab some rears if you can find them cheaply but hardly needed, especially if purchasing rears means you penny pinch on the fronts.

If you want my 2c and you have the cash, then grab a genuine AP 6 pot kit running 343mm rotor. Otherwise just grap one of the Taiwanese kits with a 330mm rotor for 2k odd...loads of people run them with great success

I have 6pot AP 5555s on the front of my 33 GTR with 343mm rotors and they fit under the 17x9" stock GTR rims, Enkei RP01 17x9" and my BBS (RSR?) 17x9"s. At the time these were the biggest brakes I could find which would fit under the 17s I had. Since I've put these on, albeit ditching the Ferodo pads which come with them, I haven't had brake fade even after 60km Targa stages or 30 minute sessions on the track.

They are quite $$$ but like most things you get what you pay for. Rotors are a proper floating design with curved vanes so actually dissipate heat unlike a lot of other brands "motorsports" rotors.

Semantics, similar design then. Whatever. The Thai spec ones are 1/3-1/2 the price.

I wouldn't bother with the 356mm, 330mm is fine. Gives you easy option for 17" as well. I've run 8 pad sets through the caliper on two sets of rotors.

$200 pad sets and $750 rotor sets.

So after a lot of tooing and froing I have made a decision.

I looked at some of the Taiwan stuff but the wear of rotors and cost of replacement rotors did not make sense to me. You have to remember I am in WA so always getting hit for shipping $$$$.

I have purchased a brand new set of 4 pot 335mm Alcon kit for the fronts at a huge discount to retail.

My build has always been to a budget but sometimes I am happy to spend the coin on certain areas that I believe will yield a return in performance, safety or long term cost effectiveness.

I will update my build thread when received and installed.

After this I need to sort out the rears which I think will be custom hats, dog bone to 299mm performance friction callipers. Not as expensive as you would think according to the quote I received.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.

    • Yeah I also looked at Plazmaman, but, it ended up alot  cheaper getting black ones through EFI when you also added in the delivery cost
