Can anyone shed some light on what the next steps should be?

I was thinking

-hook up jumper leads and do another test.

-pull off the timing cover and check the belt

Then if stinky comes around this week.

-Try a new VCT unit just in case if he has one.

Anything else?

yes that is what I would do.

Redo the compression test while hooked to a running engine by jumper leads

When stinkypoo drops by, swap the ignitor, CAS, AFM and ECU (one by one) and see if it makes a difference.

If still crappy results and no luck, take the timing cover off.

Timing cover is like...3 bolts isn't it? The upper half of it at least. It'd take no time to pull off and look at the belt, should be blindingly obvious if that's the problem lol.

I'd check the things that take the least time to do first.

true. I'm not sure how much work it is on a stock 25...on a 26 it needs CAS off, water line disconnected (possible re-bleed) and then about 3 bolts. not a big deal. You should either carefully mark the CAS position before removing it, or redo the base timing after.

Yeah so I can't swap out an ECU which is a bit of a pain because its a nistune R32 ECU.

Using the Window switch (Not the jaycar one) its the proper window switch.

Checked that last night and it seems fine.

Rob pulled out the ecu and re connected just to be sure.

Yeah I will re run the test tonight hopefully ( is it okay to use a jump start pack thing?)

If it's easy to pull the cover off then I will check that as well.

Hopefully stinky has time to stand in the dark and cold with me and try a CAS or maybe even see something I am not noticing.

Daniel - pm your addy and I'll drop around a fully charged Battery, a Jump Pack and Jumper leads after work.

Edit: Oh and a battery charger :)

If tonight was like last night maybe drop off a few jumpers as well :P

LONG LIVE THE RB!

So I had a few of the locals come around tonight. Shout out to "Stinky Poo, Sinister & Wilderboy"

They brought along a jump starter and we decided to do another comp test with a starter pack giving it power.

Cyl 1 = 95

Cyl 2 = 90

Cyl 3 = 80

Cyl 4 = 105

Cyl 5 = 95

Cyl 6 = 100

Sat around and pondered the idea about costs doing an engine swap or just giving up on the dream

But Stinky Poo (Don't want to f**k up the spelling to your real name) Decided he wanted to put it back together and give it one more chance.

We put everything back in and back together and the farken bitch started first go!

Didn't even miss a beat!

Right now I'm left scratching my head as to why the compression is still so low (could it be possibly the tester itself?)

and left wondering why the car just decided to start again for no reason.

Leaves me worried I'm going to get stranded somewhere I don't want to be.

My next step is maybe take it to a workshop for them to triple check everything.

Thanks to everyone for all the help over the past few days!!
I really really really can't thank you all enough!

Glad this didn't make it to page 10

Long live the RB!

And yes a warm/hot test will be a good comparison because it can be lower when cold right?

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
