what car/engine are you talking about? i had a friend with an rb30 vl commo and it basically vibrated a shit load when it got over about 80km/h and it was in high gear and running at about 2000rpm so he would have to run it it in power to kick the revs upto 3000 so it didnt make the noise. i believe the noise is purely ****ed exhaust. he insists on running it at 3000 (in power mode) all the time vs getting it checked/fixed

Get another resonator fitted to your exhaust, and it should solve the problem.

When my car was NA, I had two resonators and the rear muffler, it may sound like overkill, but the car sounded bloody smooth. When the extractors where fitted, it did sound a little "throatier", but you'd have to know the car pretty well to tell any difference.

It's been a while since I've bought a resonator, but I'd be very surprised if it cost more than $200. As for fitting, they just cut out a section of your exhaust pipe and weld the resonator in place.

After listening to that attached flie, it sounds like a secondary vibration of some sort, and not the exhaust note. I'd have a good listen to find out where the noise is coming from, it maybe as easy as the exhaust bolts needing a tighten.

i recently had to have my resonator changed to get a sticker off - went from 3" hotdog to 2.5", large barrel muffler (stuck in the middle of the 3" piping) and it has a simmilar sound - just over 2750 rpm, it howls so sharply and for sucjh a short time, that i too thought it was a rattle, but when held on the revs, it still makes the noise - it rally pisses me off too... not that it wasn't loud before ;) but at least it was constant... will change it all later, but thats another story (and thread)

good luck with getting rid of that noise mate, coz your right, its nasty !!

My exhaust history - standard exhaust had the very noise you are speaking of noise at 2800-3100rpm, but being stock was fairly quiet, then fitted rice cannon, which acted like a huge amplifier and the noise was massively loud , eventually i was pulled over and defected, went to the exhaust shop had a 2.5inch sytem fitted with the largest resonator they could fit, but keptthe cannon muffler, i now get a slightly hollow pipe noise but still sounds decent, the snappy high noise is there but much more muffled and contributes alot to the pipe noise. Personly, it scares ppl cause they think you have some crazy mods or something ???? but yeah, basicly...

Moral of the story - i think its something to do with the cams as mentioned above cause i cant get rid of it, muffle it as much as you can and live with it...sorry buddy

dude its called resnonance sp* all na rb25 have it as mentioned about its due to the degree of overlap in the cams, u cant get rid of it, only way i got my car to sound better was hollow cat and 2.5" straight through to a cannon, my exaust is still stting at home if u want it including a set of headers. Its very very hard to get rid of the noise without the car being loud, i tryed different exhaust shops and only fixed it when i started working at a performance shop.

Ok, found last night there was a rust hole in the joining weld between the pipe and rear muffler. The noise is really loud when the exhaust is cold, but slightly got quieter when hot.

Trying to find a s/s muffler or cat back system 2.5".

If anyone has or can get it. let me know.

a while ago, i had an exhuast system on the NA motor before i swapped over... 2.5 inch system.. the resenator/muffler had a lose baffle inside... it was making the noise at certain rpm's

maybe swap the resonator.. they dont cost much at all. cheap as chips in comparison to fitting new system.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
