Well he's a truck driver whom wanted a fast daily, doesn't know much about cars or knew my car has 380rwkws. He believes its just a stock "GTR" R33 with a pod, exhaust and fat tyres. He said "nothing beats the Godzilla" LoL. And yes more "leg" room would be nice. :P

TBH, My evo kinda bores me on the street.

It is simply way to focussed, and even 'spirited' driving can get boring in it because it is simply too overkill. Then again, maybe Im getting too old. haha.

Best bang for buck daily at the moment, I think you cant go past an Evo X. Comfortable, roomy, and damn quick with a few basic modifications.

Not really fair to compare a 380rwkw GTsT to a 240awkw EVO ay, how about a 240rwkw GTsT vs a 380awkw EVO - that would be a total rape.. LOL.. You would expect a 380kw r33 to pull away from the 240kw evo though, otherwise it would be pretty embarassing with all that power - I'm pretty surprised the EVO managed to keep up till 140km/h. Meaning on road/ street speeds its almost unbeatable

Had a skyline, had a evo, went back to a skyline, evos are boring as shit until the 300kw mark :(

Kinda disagree. I had much more fun driving my mates 220kW Evo 8 around town then my 300+kW Evo. When they are lower powered they are soooo much more fun on the streets, but boring on the track. The faster and more focussed the Evo is the more boring on the street it actually is.

They become waaaaay too overkill.

350kw on the track in RWD is way more fun :P

I have to say a Skyline is a freaking nice thing. Miss my R33 to bits... Though a 250kw EVO is quite deadly. Very potent, very fast. However, too fast.

I have to say the 6 cylinder feel bores me, I much prefer the 4s.. However the EVO is definitely loss of license material. You will be speeding everywhere etc. In my S14 I am quite conscious of using power and don't want to get raped for cracking gate. The great thing is that it has fantastic torque off boost and its easy to keep it in vacuum. Makes for awesome cruising and keeping out of trouble.

But, just sometimes, I get a little loose and decide to wake up all of western Sydney at 2AM. Its those moments that makes every other car I've owned redundant.

Lucky bugger Scott.. I don't quite agree with the s14 having great off-boost torque - I test drove 6 JDM s15s before settling for my R34 and none of them had any torque below 3500rpms lol. Have to rev them hard past 3500-4000 ish and then it hits...and then its good haha.. Driving 2 Skylines afterwards easily confirmed my purchase of the 34- no contest; much more solid all round, the sound, kinda aggro look, interior, the beautiful turbo 6, all of it. Each to his own though.

Driven an almost stock 99 model 2 door STi and it was ok fast and instant off the line, but not that fast, good for shooting in street traffic - short distance bursts and fast cornering, nice rocket - still have to rev it like an SR to get torque though.

Been a passenger in a lightly modded EVO 3 and that was fast, braking was amazing, sounds horrible, but goes HARD. Looks totally shit. And like the STi, perfect for street.

The other car I'd like to eventually own would no doubt be a MK4 Supra though not a big fan of the look - bloated whale/bus/ boat.

Much more solid than any Skyline, everythings better except the lack of AWD and handling abilities. 3 litre 2JZ shits over all else, 6 speed box, the cockpit, GT car appeal etc. Just my two cents.

Stock S15's are damn boring, with a 3" turbo back exhaust and a tune they are a very different car to drive, very driveable daily

Lol I do most of my driving between 2 and 3krpm, and it definitely motors away from the traffic like that. A friend with a stock NEO 25 (cooler and exhaust) agrees my SR is better in every way.

There is never going to be middle ground between Skylines and later Evos . There is no perfect performance car either .

People ask me which of mine is better and I just say they're different . Much of what people like is different depending on their mood and how they drive at the time .

When the bloods up an Evo suits because everything is sharper steering braking handling wise . They are deliberately biased towards hard driving because originally they were homologation specials - up to E6 anyway . This is what it took for manufacturers to have a potent contender and a legal race car basis . It's the reason why GTRs only had 2568 odd ccs out of the box .

I think Evos were popular in the day because it gave people the chance to buy a drive a tamed down race car basis . Most are GSRs so you get fast glass AC sound Momo Recaro n Brembo brakes AWD turbo close ratio box off the show room floor . It gets harder edged than these in the RS models , pov pac stripper options make them lighter faster and the gearing gets even shorter - think 4.8 diffs . If you want a fast urban street burner legally an RS Evo with a bit of work is very hard to beat . It's also an uncomfortable fussy thing to drive "normally" because it's not intended to be an everyday commuter .

The sad fact people is that you don't go flat out everywhere all the time and if normal driving is the bulk of what you do the race car traits make them a PITA . The later GSR Evos get a bit more civilised but you're never going to turn a Cheetah into a family cat .

My first impressions of an Evo was the steering is really sharp and fast (ratio) . Brake feel is better than anything I'd driven before and this thing is really nimble , changes direction quickly and easily which is why they have the go cart feel .. It felt quite torquey for a 2 litre four but didn't quite have RB25 down low . The gearbox ratios are close 1-2-3 and you get the idea you'll be short changing - lots . When you get into an Evo occasionally they give the impression they're goading you on , c'mon give me gas bugger this tooling around . They beg you to zip round corners faster and zig zag through the traffic . Curiously a standard 4G63T wants to be worked and is generally reving higher than you think - part of the close box thing . Then after a while you start to ignore the race cart stuff and just wheel it around like any other traffic victim . THEN you start to notice the firmer suspension the griping seats and 50 gear changes between traffic lights , a small voice asks you if you really like this stuff just cruising from A to B .

The missus isn't generally impressed with the seats and firm ride and the agro styling .

The bottom line is many people don't like tamed down race car traits - even if they are performance enthusiasts . Perceived road car performance and real race car performance is hugely different and not just with leaving rubber on the road . If you really do like race car like traits and a few civilised bits like music aircon fast glass and number plates Evos are great things . They are fast for production road cars and if you like acceleration they'll destroy any vaguely legal RWD Skyline out of the blocks . If you like bashing into you doors round Ss the Skyline hasn't got a hope of staying with you . BUT the Skylines seats are more comfortable they ride better and the RB is smoother and torquier at lowish revs . The gearing better suits general driving and they are a more relaxed overall package .

The bottom line I think is you strap an Evo on where you climb in sit down with a Skyline . The Evo becomes more of an extension of your hands and feet so you have to concentrate more on what your new limbs are doing . It's not quite the same with the Skyline but you don't always need it to be .

    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
