I don't think it would be boring at all.

I think 90% of the people on this forum would be able to run in this field.

Ths only people who wouldn't would be those with an engine/transmission swap.

BASS OUT

I think cars that have had engine swaps ahould still be allowed. What about '30/31/32 Skylines that have had an RB25 transplanted, for example. And keep in mind it's not a Skyline only class.A lot of genuine street cars have engine swaps. :)

And my 2c on being worried about driving home from the track, from threat of defects on the way.......A Genuine street car should be ok,as driving to/from the track should be no different from driving down to the shops,as a Genuine street car would do. :(

I guess it would have to be okay when you put it like that.

But, I wouldn't like to come up against a beast like the little Datsun 1200 Ute with a 13B Turbo which is actually street registered here in Melbourne that runs obscene times, and looks like it's trying to kill its driver everytime it gets to half track!!

2rismo. I know Nitto are nice and stickey, but who drives around the streets with Nittos everyday??

In regards to engine swaps, I think they should be from the same manufacturer as the original.

if you want to race in street trim in a street car go to a off street meet, they are on every Wednesday now at WSID

We're all talking about a competitive class, Brett. How does this attitude help the people with these cars that want to compete? I think your missing the point.

Adrian

I think there should be an untubbed street class with

1.semi racing street radial tyres

2.no major body modifycations. I.E:must run in full street trim only allowing for removal of miscalanius parts the spare etc

3.nos/no nos.

4.minor drivetrain I.E clutch upgrades, lsd's,flywheels. no racing g/box doggie or sequential has to run stock.

5.engine mod unlimited

just some fuel for thought.:):):(:)

3.nos/no nos?fuel type is to hard to govern in a street type class there are usually to many competitors.

4.minor drivetrain I.E clutch upgrades, lsd's,flywheels. no racing g/box doggie or sequential has to run stock.

5.Restrict turbos to high flows, allow the use of cpu's .Dont know what i would do in n/a class

maybee a separate turbo class from the n/a boys only because we dont know whats in the engine untill it has its run down the quarter at least with a turbo car we know that a person is not going to go to the trouble of a full engine rebuild for a highflow. But you never do know.

This might seem stupid but i think in order to be able to keep the class competitive it has to have a level playing feild so to speak with numerous modifycations allowing for a competitive setup for it's competitors cars.

A class that can be governed in one way or another allowing for close competitive racing is what these peeps will look at, not a class where you can run a ballistic engine and turbo combo (unlimited class) but a class where every one can enjoy.dial your own class is probably the only class that caters for every type of street driver in the fairness of good sport

just some fuel for thought.:):):(:)

something we all need to remember is that this class isnt just for imports... any car, V8, 4, 6 rotor. I think bestto go by the RTA rule book and if it can pass a road side RTA inspection it should be deemed good to race in street class.

Engine sizes i think should be restricted by tyre/wheel sizes which would then allow engine transplants AS LONG AS THEY ARE ENGINEERED AND RTA LEGAL.

Some of you also should jusmp on AusRotary as we need to all put forward or views as this affects all of us.....

Here is the AusRotary link for people that may be interested in what their ideas are....

Well that counts ALL the South Australian guys out! As far as SA Transport are concerned a very mildly modified car (and I mean very mild!) like 95% of the people on here is a no-no.

Most has already been said but:

-interiors, including orignal dash and heater controls, to be in place and operational. Sard Stack, microtech dash's ok as long as they are housed in the factory position

-must have 2 front seats of some kind mounted in the standard position

-glass windows, no lexan or perspex.

-at least the drivers window must be operational

-"H" pattern gearbox, no sequentially shifted boxes or non downshifting boxes

-no traction control devices unless fitted from the factory

-after market engine management ok

-pump fuel (Ultimate, optimax etc) octane boosters ok

-no N2O

-no wheel arch mods, guard lipping ok at most

-radial tyres regardless of Aussie DOT approval ie Nitto 555R, BFG Drag radials but must be treaded

-standard suspension and mounting points to be retained. Tramp rods or drift "pineapples" ok

-atmo BOV's and pod filters ok

-must have rego in a state of Australia

-engine transplants to be engineered and RTA approved (car then fits in with donor cars class)

-radial tyres only, no cross plys

-exhaust is to exit the car after the diff

-engine size dictates tyre width ie 275/35/18 rather than a 26x8 as a street tyre is not measured in inches as such

I have pretty much dragged everything people have said that i think dictates a "street car" and put them in this list.

Sure there are some things that arent 100% street legal, but we need to have some leniency. The rules will need to clear and easy to understand. I for one have never had anything to do with drag racing other than street meets and would benefit greatly from clear concise, basic rules i guess for the want of a word. Some people are baffled by the street meet rules currently in place so i am sure it wold help the class.

Adrian I'm only being honest, whats really stopping those people from racing in Sports RWD or DYO?

I can see 8thsin, Dom's orange Z and that gold Supra all running in a class like this as they are street cars and it will be dominated by 10 to low 11 second cars, which really wont be competitive for Street cars unless the rules were made to be that harsh that it would end up not allowing cars in like theirs, yours that uses Nitrous or mine that uses a bigger turbo

Its really a no win situation for the basic street car that is in true street trim as there will always be bigger cars that take drag racing more serious and want the lower times so mod their street cars accordingly but on the other side of the coin why should those people be penalised for it

Sorry guys, but there is already a class for this type of vehicle...it's called Sport RWD.

That class is due for revision, and some changes will be made....but passing a roadside rego/ roadworthy inspect just to qualify to race?.....I don't think so

Drag racing is about getting cars off the street and in a safe enviroment.....99.999999% of the cars on our tracks are not deemed roadworthy by the stiff collared suits at the RTA.....but that dosen't stop us allowing them to run......and nor will it.

The track is your refuge from the hard nose officers of the blue brigade, and you show your enjoyment by doing burnouts, purging your NOS, and spooling up that moooohhhassive T06 turbo......not acceptable on the street...but at home on the track.

Oh and the term 'DOT' is an American term that refers to the Department of Transport - which is only relevant in the States....not here! We are working on the correct terminology, that will be used in the soon to be released rule book. Needless to say Australia complies with laws set down by the RTA - Road Transport Authority. If your 'street tyres' don't meet the Australian design standards then they are not deemed legal for use on our roads.

Cops are wising up to this and are defecting cars across the nation for it. It's a red tape thing I know, but it's reality. So if there is not Aust. compliance on your tyres then don't expect to race on them at an ANDRA Sport Compact street tyre class. I will be policing this at the Jamboree as the dangers involved are huge....and a dead racer, resulting from dodgy tyres is just plain bull shyte......Check your tyres, and be prepared.

But I do like where this discussion is headed....please email me the results so we can identify what your specific racing needs are.

Jason O'Halloran

ANDRA Sport Compact Director

That class is due for revision, and some changes will be made....

Like i've said on this and other forums, "AWESOME!".

In regards to the tyres being RTA approved or not, Nitto NT555R Extreme Drag tyres aren't, BFGoodrich Comp T/A and gForce T/A's aren't, Hoosier Drag Radials aren't, MT ET Streets aren't, MT Street Radials aren't.....

Its really a no win situation for the basic street car that is in true street trim

It can be if they race in a bracket.

take drag racing serious

Right. If you don't own a big HP car built to run in a particular class and just have a regular street car, you don't, "take drag racing seriously". I get it.

Adrian

Piss off Adrian your taking one part of what I'm saying and quoting it out of context if you want to play the quote and answer game at least do it with the whole paragraph

So what your saying is the racer that takes his or her street car once a month to the drags is as serious a racer as some one like me who will have spent $50k on their car in the aim to lower my times, they both may be serious about it but one is committed to it and the other looks at it as a bit of fun, I don't think of racing as a bit of fun to me its a lifestyle which I choose to excel at no matter what the sacrifices or costs may be

ROFL Robo I should point out Adrian and myself are good mates, we may not agree on everything and definitely look at things differently but at the end of the day we can both have an opinion and not agree, it doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong it just means we have different opinions

That age old saying in drag racing - the fastest car is owned by the person with the deepest pockets! and rightly so, beacuse its those cars we are enjoy reading about and seeing fly down the 1/4.

If you want to race and compete on a budget, go race Dial Your Own category, its that simlpe

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
