Very nice! Gotta be stoked with almost getting 1:55!

My ultimate goal is 1m50s flat on street tyres.

More seat time, maybe soften the front anti roll bar to reduce the car washing out on high speed corners and maybe brake a touch later.

Only my 2nd time on SMSP as well, much more practise is needed.

And lap of the shit box, conveniently no GPS data on the VIRB for half the night. But you can see the speedo go past 180km/h lolol

At least your car can go past 180, mine was sitting on the speed limiter down the main straight hahaha.

Power delivery looks smooth, just needs more limiter while bouncing off the ripple strips :P

Trying to find a cage with works with the entire interior with a removable cross bar and removable harness bar. Seems no such thing exists.

AGI might entertain the idea of both parts being removable but they aren't keen.

So for now, I will be installing a harness bar so I can use a harness with my fixed bucket seat instead of a normal seatbelt. Here's hoping it provides a bit more safety compared to a conventional seatbelt if I ever bin the car at the track.

Time to find a proper race car with a proper cage maybe.........

Proper harness is good and can wear a HANS device too.
They wouldn't want to build something with removable bars as won't pass MSA regs.

Fixed seat with a harness and only a harness bar is great, as long as you don't roll and crush your spine.

Bond roll cages Australia built/installed the 1/2 cage in my old 33 with a removable harness bar. Fine if you don't need to comply with some regs

Yeah that's probably why they're hesitant, however I'm not going to be professionally racing the car. The cage & harness is purely for a bit more safety over the OEM gear.

Will get in touch with them in the future, see if I can get something that works for added safety with the option of keeping the car street friendly when not at the track. And you're correct, I don't need to comply with regs as I'm just a casual track racer and not competing

Found an old pic, you did need to "negotiate" the cross bar though, I push alot of the old 33 out of my brain for sanity reasons , rear seat still fitted without the harness bar

Yeah I understand that, I have had a low speed front corner impact at 70kph into a concrete barrier once. It hurt with bruising and proper concussion for a week, No cage, 3 point seat belt and helmet. The big one in the getz at over 100kph, fine no problems small bruise from HANS on my chest. State level 6 pt cage, winged seat, HANS, 6 Point harness.

These are the current regs for cages. Anyone that does cages will reference this.

I suspect a few things will change in regard to bolt in cages and joints. Have a good read of this and you can see why there will be changes.

Imagine coming unstuck turn 1 at Eastren Creek and hitting kitty litter sideways then rolling at 150+kph.

Can't put a price on your life.
I've done some high risk shit and look back going WTF was I thinking doing that even with silly amount of training. It was f**king exciting as shit when it went right.

Read half of the report so far, very informative.

Scary the roll cage failed and literally bent like a stick of butter. Also what's shit house was the barriers weren't even concreted in properly, was a clusterfk of things.

Yeah the joints weren't up for it especially when you read the tech stuff.

Barriers weren't there really to stop cars. The data from the car is interesting to see and how the can interpret it.

The new stuff that is coming for cage rules will affect everyone. Need to be 50mm from memory from occupant to bar. Especially the smaller cars.

@robbo_rb180

pretty much if this was individually bolted down OR welded down the driver would have been fine

Man, after reading parts of that, I want a cage now.

That report will hopefully open a lot of peoples eyes to safety and what can happen at lower speeds.

This is why I have that s15 to put a driveline in. I want to be safe and even in the 180sx with half cage, seat and 6 point harness I still feel its sketchy at Lakeside.

Have a proper chat with AGI or another fabricator. There will be a way to have a decent cage and make it tight to the interior.

Does the back seat ever get used?

rarely these days, it usually just has jerry cans LOL

But at some point I will put in a baby seat, just when we need a 2nd car (rarely).

i wasnt allowed to buy a track car unless it had a cage (wifes rules) so I have a 6 point bond bolt in cage.

I have heard some horror stories of cages ripping right through the floor when (particularly older jap cars) landing on the roof dead flat in a rollover

    • To expand on this to help understanding... The bigger/longer the block is, the more it's going to work to sit on your far away high areas, and not touch the low stuff in the middle. When you throw the guide coat, and give it a quick go with a big block, guide coat will disappear in the high spots. If those high spots are in the correct position where the panel should be, stop sanding, and fill the low spots. However, using a small block, you "fall off" one of the high spots, and now your sanding the "side of the hill". Your little block would have been great for the stone chips, where you only use a very small amount of filler, so you're sanding and area let's say the size of a 5/10cent piece, with something that is 75*150. For the big panel, go bigger!   And now I'll go back to my "body work sucks, it takes too much patience, and I don't have it" PS, I thought your picture with coloured circles was an ultra sound... That's after my brain thought you were trying to make a dick and balls drawing...
    • Oh I probably didn't speak enough about the small sanding block for blocking large areas.  In the video about 3 minutes in, he talks about creating valleys in the panel. This is the issue with using a small sanding block for a large area, it's way too easy to create the valleys he is talking about. With a large block its much easier to create a nice flat surface.  Hard to explain but in practice you'll notice the difference straight away using the large block.
    • Yep I guessed as much. You'll find life much easier with a large block something like this -  https://wholesalepaint.com.au/products/dura-block-long-hook-loop-sanding-block-100-eva-rubber-af4437 This is a good demo video of something like this in use -    You have turned your small rock chip holes into large low spots. You'll need to fill and block these low spots.  It's always a little hard not seeing it in person, but yes I would go ahead and lay filler over the whole area. Have a good look at the video I linked, it's a very good example of all the things you're doing. They went to bare metal, they are using guide coat, they are doing a skim coat with the filler and blocking it back. If what you're doing doesn't look like what they are doing, that's a big hint for you
    • The odometer does go up when driving.  Does this tell it is an issue with the speedometer itself?    Where can I look for replacement cluster? Or speedo? I can likely do the repair.. Will ER34 cluster work on HR34? Or do I need a HR34 20GT S2 specifically lol
    • Mine's a bit bigger at 70x150mm roughly. The spots are flat, just can feel the edges if I dig my nail into it. I did fix some other other ones by both using my finger to sand that small spot (I'm a bit wary of doing this and creating hot spots and a bigger mess) and I also did sand over it flat and others, but this also worried me a bit because if I create an overall low spot on the panel on paint that is good.  Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as it's flat even if I can feel the edges, I can put filler because it will all be level once I sand it? I can see myself going in a circle after sanding guidecoat with 320 grit if for example the panel is flat with my hand but because I sanded the guidecoat I could have created a low spot again somewhere. Unless where I'm going wrong is what I mentioned previously where I didn't go low enough on the grits. It's 1 step forward and 2 step backwards here haha. I'll probably need to experiment with it more. Last time I go back to bare metal lol.
