G'day. R32 GTS-T 'Restoration' Diary

G'day to all reading this (or just myself).

I'm in the process of buying a 1992 R32 GTS-T type M currently and am hoping to keep a record of my ownership in this thread.

The car in unregistered and I picked it up for cheap with plenty of problems. I did actually read what you all said about this! I just ignored it.

I hope to get it in a roadworthy condition within the next 6 months and to take it on a track for a few hot laps when its done. Any help on (eventually) getting on a track would be particularly helpful as this is foreign to me. I'm not looking for the fastest car on the forum (nor the prettiest), I just want to experience owning an r32 and a cheap reasonably achievable project car.

When I get the car home I will do an introduction and post all details and pics of the cars current status.

I've been reading the SAU forums for ages looking at things to look out for and mods/capabilities etc and I have used this forum to troubleshoot some other cars I have had.

Be forewarned, I am not a mechanic or automotive professional, things that work for me may not for you (or for long). Feel free to provide criticism and hints but take any advice at your own risk.

Wish me luck and thanks in advance for all the help.

OK. So I picked up the car today. And dramas already. I met the seller at his house (away from the car, I inspected it a few days ago) as he is ill and the car was a good 40 mins drive away. After paying him, paper work etc, I drive out to the car to trailer it back to my place.

Both front and rear windscreens are broken. Bloody annoying. He's told me he is willing to put some money towards it after I mentioned that I only didn't see it due to doing him a favour and meeting at his house. He has offered to give me 500$ back.

However after having a quick look cant seem to see any rear glass less than 700$ + shipping + I can just see now the seals will be stuffed. And Im assuming the front will be about 200-250 as well. If anyone has any estimates or info on where to find glass or a good r32 wrecker in Sydney / Central Coast area (or is selling) would be very helpful.

I bought the car unregistered and not running but after getting it home I have found that the fuel lines are split and it just throws fuel on the ground. Hopefully fixing this will get it started. In other news all the electrics work and the motor at least turns over. Im hoping the big job on this car will be the aesthetics. It sure is ugly at the moment.

Crappy Iphone pics coming when I get on my other computer. Ive got a good surprise coming with the previous owners interior mod ;)

Yes it is what u might call a bit of a   "shitter" haha. Paid more than scrap value so yes probably paid too much. Hell of a lot of work but half the reason I bought it. As promised shitty iPhone pics. My fav is Gtr headliner.

In other news. Trying to get it started. Leasking fuel lines are replaced.

Will start with start ya bastard but won't on petrol. Has fuel pressure up to the first pressure regulator? thingo. But no fuel coming out return. I think there is a blockage somewhere in the fuel rail. Going to have a break from it for a bit so any ideas where to look for blockage / any other ideas appreciated. Photos show hose going in with pressure but no fuel returning from the connector with no hose.

OK, So Im definitely getting fuel past the dampener (damper?) into the fuel rail but not getting it out past the pressure regulator.

Am I right in thinking that everything working fuel should build up pressure in the rail and then return to the tank through regulator after pressure is too high.

If so then Im thinking either pressure regulator is stuffed or fuel pump isn't putting out enough pressure to over come the threshold in the regulator.

Fuel pump is pumping but no idea of knowing how much.

Does this sound correct? Is one more likely than the other?

Thanks mate, I will probably replace both as Im keen to get it running or at least find the next problem in the line haha.

Assuming I don't find any horror stories first I will most likely get cheap ebay regulator and pump. Would prefer original regulator due to small size and tidy fit but seems like this will be a pain to source. Could most likely get it from wreckers but online is easy.

Quick ebay search brings up these - haven't decided on these yet but will finalise this arvo.

80$ Pump http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Performance-Fuel-Pump-Skyline-RB20-RB25-R32-R33-R34-/120568439688

  • 2 weeks later...

So I received parts in mail last week and installed over the weekend. The fuel pump was the issue. I have installed the new pressure regulator too ATM but will likely go back to the stock one if it works. The first drive around the block provided me with some optimism. It drives, steers and stops which is cool. Due to it not being rego'ed or even close to roadworthy my drive was very very short ~60m so hard to really get much out info out of it.

One problem that was instantly obvious is the clutch has a problem. Ie, doesn't engage until almost at the floor and only has about 2mm of play between full in and full out. This may just be due to sitting and had no pressure but I think it may need some adjusting / bleeding. I read quickly that it can be adjusted somewhere in the footwell / firewall region.

There also seems to be a boost or exhaust leak somewhere as it makes a squealing type noise above a few thousand rpm. Could also be busted turbo compressor or even just normal turbo noises, I have next to no experience with turbos and haven't had the opportunity to investigate further as frustratingly I got a full time job just days after buying this project to fill all the spare time I had.

Also needs

- Blinkers (front left wiring seems to be missing completely front right just need installing)

- Bonnet latch adjusted or sorted out

- Headlight switch twisty thing

- Door mirror glass

- Horn

- Windscreen glass (nightmare)

- Dodgy black rattle can paint job for the meantime

Theres other things it needs (major service) but with the above list sorted it might pass blueslip which seems necessary for further investigation and troubleshooting of engine.

My next mission will probably be the lighting and looking into what nizmo-man was mentioning above. It did come with a set of hids and some clear style (altezza?) indicator casings, which I actually don't really like that much, but it only has one of the gtst clear with orange bubble ones.

    • GCG is a good company, they're a major distributor for Garrett in Japan as well.
    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).
    • Ok thanks 🙂 I will higly consider this. Any "known" company for a good reviews and experience to send that off? Is that CJ-motor good one? Or go straight to GCG site? I need to use VPN to even find some of those "shops" let alone access them 🙂
    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence. Can't access the attachment without being a gold member, but it is there for the getting if able to, or searched up elsewise perhaps. https://www.hpacademy.com/forum/general-tuning-discussion/show/wmi-vs-e85/
