Hi,

Have a new R32 GTR in the stable. It's a long story but suffice it to say I have very very little information on this car and it will, in the near future be heading to a mechanic to see exactly what has already been done.

It already has a big single turbo conversion that is super laggy, full boost at like 5100rpm.

Straight to the very weird question:

I only want to make 400hp at wheels, I want the absolute best street response up to that power level.

Putting twins back on is cost prohibitive.

Best single for my purpose?

Thankyou

Gen ii 3582r. More responsive than any twin setup and will make more power everywhere. Plus lots more than 400hp

Thankyou for the suggestion. Just had a quick look, with a power range of 450 to 800hp it seems way out of my needs, especially coming in at $3,200.

Does anything else offer good spool up time, more of a 450 top range and come in a bit cheaper?

I do realise that a 450 to 800 HP window is a great investment at $3200 if you think you might upgrade later but I'm 100% confident I'm happy with 400-450hp

How much are you expecting to spend? What is the current setup? You can take a punt and buy a china version of the turbo if you want to save money. Its a waste but its cheaper.

I'm not adverse to spending money, I just think if GCG are for example selling the GTX3076R for sub $2000 (admittedly for the RB25) with a 350-550hp range then there must be something in that price range to suit my needs for the rb26.

I have also emailed gcg to see what they can come up with.

go.

Not keen on running E85 to be honest. Has to be achievable on pump gas

Borg Warner s256 or similar. Unbeatable for value and reliability.

Don't get caught in the crowd like all the other sheep on the forum. Do what suits your needs.

Plenty of cheque book racers on here will tell you otherwise.

Thanks mate, I will check it out now

There's no difference in the application.  For all intents and purposes, once you take the twins off a 26, the turbo to make any given power level is essentially the same thing on either engine.

Next size down is GTX3076.  GTX turbos work best at high pressure ratios, so you might even be better off with a non-GTX (ie, GT).

Or, you could go to Borg Warner's matchbot and play with selecting from their offerings.  Likely cost more.

I would go GTX3576R and a nice 1.xx rear divided housing.

Twins are not responsive, nor are they great for transient response. You need a good twin scroll setup, from what you may have there - it "could" be a dinosaur single scroll setup with a turbo from the 1990s.

I'm using modified factory twin turbo manifolds with a single twin scroll housing, single 40mm waste gate.

Starts making usable boost from 2000 rpm. Power holds til 8000 rpm without dropping off.

Total cost of $300 for turbo, $4 for 2 x gaskets, $13 for marmon flange . Plus bits I had laying around and a tune.

What turbo and how much power does it make?

A borgwarner s256 ish off a diesel tractor. Touch under 400wkw. Left the 305 semis on. Not sure if the number would be different with smaller tyres.

If you ran it on the dyno with smaller street tyres it will read higher :)

What fuel for that result?  I'm thinking E85.

Post up dyno sheet with torque curve if you've got one!

S256 is still a very good unit, given its age.  Application is on a John Deere harvester.  There's an updated/higher flowing unit too, called S257SXE.  Both built to deliver/handle high pressure ratios, so the thrust bearing is good.  I nearly got one but BW Matchbot and a bit of consultation with Full Race indicated they were a touch small for a 30DET.

Very good match on a 25/26 capacity and a comfortable 450rwhp on petrol.  If I still ran the short stroke bottom end, I'd go for one and spend on a twin gate/split pulse setup.

The new price vs performance for these things makes them a no brainer up against "budget" and "entry level" units.

That's without ecb connected. Single 40mm wastegate, twins aren't needed  imo. Turbo is extended tip compressor. The one I took off is from a CAT engine. Same size wheels with a different size/ shape rear housing. That's going on a 2630 now. Aiming fora responsive 300kw on p98.

That one has been on the rb26 for about 3 years trouble free. Not a drop of oil anywhere and zero wear.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
