Hello,

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on what coil packs are the best to use on an rb20det. My r32 had little misfires since the day i bought it. One of my  yellow jacket coilpacks failed a while back and melted through the housing. After i had replaced the failed coilpack it was good for a short while untill it started having misfires again. (Still only happening on idle). I checked my wiring harness and noticed that the signal wire to the failed coilpack was damaged so i replaces the damaged cable. But the misfires still remained.

I currently have yellow jacket coils installed and have a new set of splitfire dis 001 coils and a new wiring loom to hook up to the oem ignitor but i really would like to delete the ignitor. I have 2 options/idea's

Option 1

I tought about selling my new splitfire dis 001 coils and order a new set for an r34 skyline (smart coils) in combination with a wiring specialties harness to hook it all up without ignitor.

Option 2 

I have seen some post of people using ngk audi r8 coils on their rb's and opposed to the r34 coils these are way cheaper (over 300 euro's cheaper). And ordering them is alot easier because i can just get them from my local autoparts store. Now the wiring harness is my issue i looked for a long time online and i couldnt find a harness for an rb20det to fit these r8 coils to so i would propably have to make one myself or get one made. 

My final question is what your opinions are on this and what would be my best option.

You have already discovered that Yellow Jackets are no good.

Stock Nissan or Splitfires are recommended but I believe the R8 coils will also work fine. Sorry can't help with the wiring - try googling... I am sure there are some guides somewhere.

I am assuming you have some kind of aftermarket ecu or a Nistine chip

Still have stock ecu and i would like to go g4 link in the future or ecu master

Option 1 is the correct thing to do. It is extremely easy to convert to smart coils from RB25 S2.

Buy a new coilpack harness to suit RB25 S2 as well. Stock ones are usually junk by this time.

Hey guys, 

I'm looking installing a Haltech on my RB20DET series 1 and as part of that i'm installing 

RB25 Series 2 coils to remove the ignitor. Does anyone know if the standard mounting 

bracket for the coils will work?

I'm using "nasty old coils" because I've already ordered my new loom with series 2 smart coil connector sub loom, and I'm running a pretty much stock RB20det which will be lucky to make 180kw. I think the coils will be ok for my application. 

 

Thanks for the feedback about the bracket. When my new coils arrive I'll have a loom and machine a new bracket up. 

So sell sub loom for coils and go to

If only 180kw why are you even worried about deleting the ignitor when ignitor coils can handle heaps, like 400kw+. Sell sub loom, go to R35 kit if wanting the ignitor delete solution.

Makes no sense to delete ignitor then run stock / splitfire S2 coils for the cost -  complete waste of time really.

Just trying to reinforce how much of a quantum leap the 35 coils are are over what your proposing doing, compared to not changing the stock coil setup at all. If you don't already own the S2 coilpacks yet you could still change without a big cost difference👍

I totally agree with you, I have done a bit of research and by far they are a better option.

But yeah, I already have the coils ordered and the loom and ECU is also on its way with plugs for the S2 coils. The engine is a Series 1 RB20 so nothing has really been straightforward. It wasn't just for the purpose of an ignitor delete.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox ! 
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
