Some interesting comparisons:

looks like they might be Ok for general use, but you still can't do big miles in one without stopping and recharging.  eg I sometimes drive to Coffs Harbour and its over 800km for me, I can't do it without a long lunch somewhere while the car gets zapped.  I do fill up the Skyline a few times now, but its 15 minutes in and out, not an hour or so.

There are diesel powered cars that will do over 1000km without refueling and currently there are no electric cars that can match this but it is stupid to make wider use of electric cars a political issue . Alternatives to IC engines are necessary and inevitable.  There are challenges to be overcome but consider this:

Many years ago my then boss bought a "portable phone" which came in a small suitcase and cost $5,000 ...about half the price of a medium car. Today for $200 you can buy a phone the size of a cigarette packet (another dinosaur!) and with more computing power than desk tops had not too long ago.

Never mind Tesla - the Chinese will soon have millions of electric cars on the road and India won't be far behind. All the major manufacturers are urgently trying to get electric (not hybrid) versions of all their models.

This is without any doubt the way of the future although much work remains to be done.

The point you've raised is energy density. At the moment, the amount of energy in diesel is greater than that of the equivalent sized battery.

You're absolutely right that they won't do it yet. But they are coming. There's always work on new battery types.

I forsee Australian (and American) cars being a lot more hybrid in the near future. This will give you the benefits of electric without the limited range that currently exists in an electric only vehicle.

It actually makes sense for a hybrid ute. All that zero rpm torque plus a decent range. I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened already.
