Back again . My DR30 has an open 3.9 ratio R200 . I thought all these cars came with an LSD center . The Bluebird had an R200 3.9 ratio LSD that had the internal spacers flicked and a full set of plates fitted , I think 3 sets of active plates per side insted of 1 . The pre-load was about 67 ft lbs and too much for a road car .

My point is I want to try a 3.7 ratio diff to give the engine more to load up against .

I've noticed that when loaded down with lots of weigh ie extra diffs/drive shafts/struts/A arms/X members (basically another car in the boot) the engine basically says bring it on , more more more . Has anyone used the 3.7 ratio and what did it come out of , swapping in the lsd is no issue .

Also nearly forgot DR30 R200's can use a very expensive replacable uni joint found only in the middle of some Navara 2 piece tailshafts . I believe there is a pinion flange that is larger off I think a Z31 or a 280ZX that uses a larger replacable and cheaper uni joint . Anyone out there know for sure ?

My car has too many std intercooled turbo bits I reckon to be retro . It is white under the bonnet and two pak silver elswhere ie no lairy decals behind the doors or black lower down .

Its more likely that it was changed in Japan after being abused or it was too good to sell with the car . As I understand it R200 LSD's are not cheap but can be fitted into later cars (the center hemisphere) . In the early 80's Nissan changed the crown wheel bolts from 10 to 12mm , early centers can be drilled out to 12mm or late ones can have 1mm thick bushes fitted to 1 or 2 bolts just to torque it up .

Anyhow I want a 3.7 open diff to put my LSD in to give the engine more load to work against . I hate the 1-2 ratio spread in the Nissan gearboxes (too wide) and there is no easy way around this . Some RB25DET gearboxes are slightly better but are very expensive to buy and substantially heavier . I'll have to look into Z31/32 NA gearboxes as I vaguely remember one of them having a 3:1 1st gear .

R200 diffs also came in S12, S13, S14, S15 - R30, R31, R32, R33. If you investigate all the types of R200's, you should find the ideal one for your application. Being a DR30, the smaller R200's such as S13 etc will probably be your best option as the R33/Z32 diff centres are the larger type.

Not quite sure what you mean by larger type . I know S13-15 and Z32 , R32/33 use a slightly different variant (shorter snout and pinion shaft plus different mounting system) I think the basic hemisphere dimensions are the same ie carrier bearing journals and the register that locates in the crown wheel .

When I mentioned Z31/32 I was refering to gearbox ratios .

Boof yes . When I had the Bluebird (L20B bored and stroked to 2340cc pre FJT) Stewart Wilkins built me a gearbox using Aust spec 260Z mainshaft and lay gear , also converted to warner syncros . 1st was 2.906:1 and the rest the same as FJ20 . 1st was a touch tall but once rolling it was brilliant . I still have this box but unfortunately the gears are all narrow as in all early Nissan 6 cyl 71 series boxes . I reckon the FJ would kill it in short order .

It would appear that some have an incorrect understanding of gear ratios. So FYI here's how it works:

for example, old mate has a 3:1 first gear a 2.5:1 2nd, a 2:1 3rd, and a 3.9:1 diff ratio.

He feels that 1st gear is "too low" (ie car hauls a55 in 1st but bogs down when it hits 2nd)

He could change the diff ratio to a higher 4.11, (higher number= lower ratio), this would give the impression of the gears being closer together, but at the same time rather than fixing the problem he is just masking it. with the downfall being less overall top end.(more torque would fix it properly though, as Adam_RSX said.)

The solution is to lower the ratio of 1st gear,(raise the number) to maybe 2.8:1

He is raising 1st by lowering the ratio, bringing 1st closer to 2nd.

Higher the number, lower the ratio.......

PS if you all already knew this then maybe i just got confused along the thread...

I think Disco wants to go higher ratio diff (3.7:1) as well as tinker with the box ratios....

Yeah, i know....i was just clearing it up for someone who appeared to not get it properly....

also, i dunno bout r30's onwards but the older dattos that had auto trannys were all 3.7 ratio diff......try looking in an auto r30/32/33/34 maybe?

The answer to your diff question is 260Z, they came out standard with a long nose R200 open 3.7:1 ratio.

The gearbox might be a little different, but my sources tell me the Zed rally guys are now using R31 gearboxes behind their L series engines, just have to change and modify the bell housing.

I have an RB20DET box that I am going to set up to suit the L Series if I go that way.

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
